Life of a middle aged werewolf
do u have tips for starting an online business as a small artist?
This can be a tricky question for me, because I started when the internet was a very different place! There are lots of people who are successful at selling online right now who will have good advice. The tips I can give at this point are broad. I would say to build good relationships with individuals and don’t stress too much about numbers (especially at the beginning). Once you find your audience, continue a genuine relationship with them.
There was a point in my career where I was focused on online merch sales and chasing trends. It was short lived and ultimately unsuccessful. Any long term success I’ve found came from trusted clients that started out as casual friendships over shared interests. They rooted for me, and I rooted for them. Community building, whether online or in-person, is key to stability.
Also, don’t burn yourself out! Running a small business is HARD. Don’t be afraid to ask for help (which you’re already doing, kudos!).
Best of luck to you, you’re gonna do great!

Life advice from a skeleton on the highway.
Don’t forget to bring your sketchbook!
also we fucked up as a society the moment we started telling teens and aspiring artists to conflate being an artist with building a brand as if the two things are inextricable. the name of the game if you want to share your art is to work a job and sell yourself as aesthetizied content. back in my day we could just POST SHIT. to deviantart! what the fuck!
pro-tip if ur a teen or aspiring artist: stay the fuck away from tiktok. tiktok is not the place for your art. your art is not content to be sold. don’t listen to art youtubers advice if they dilute being an artist to stats and algorithms. trying to make a business or career out of art is actually something that takes a lot of experience and consideration to go into it is Not an inherent facet to getting started/expressing yourself as an artist. conflating art = selling something/working a job is the fastest fucking way to ruin it for yourself i am so serious. find communities that share your artistic interests make friends and share your art there. be indulgent and creative and experimental. you deserve a period in your artistic journey that is purely selfish and fostering of your growth. don’t let capitalism take that from you yet
I didn’t get my business license until I was THIRTY. And even then, with a fully formed frontal lobe, I had to take a couple years to hash out what an art business was going to look like for me.
I tried the “hustling merch via social media” route for a while and it was genuinely one of the most soul sucking things that I’ve done in this process. AND it was bleeding my finances dry!
This year I’ve focused on things I enjoy, things within my community. I barely use social media anymore and I was shocked that it didn’t affect my business at all really. I focused on making art and maintaining good irl relationships, and I genuinely believe that’s paid off for my creativity and my sanity.

Met this guy a couple years back. He rigged up this sick ass bicycle trailer out of some old baby strollers, which I think about often. Hope he’s doing well.

I often think about that study that says cats probably think we’re cute too.
