Not intentionally, he could just see that this boy was going to be a failure and slowly stopped trying to help Hiccup and threw himself into Chiefing and his grief. Hiccup is like decently young at this point and is forced to look after himself. So outside of the forge and looking after himself with what's available in the village, Hiccup has no idea how to do anything.

Swimming? Dagur accidentally tried to drown him once because he thought Hiccup would know how to swim by the age of 7. Hiccup was never touching a body of water that deep again. Fishing? His dad took him fishing once, but he was that little that he went looking for trolls instead of paying attention. Hiccup was never taught how to use weapons, and after a certain age, they all just assumed he was rubbish at using them, not that he had never been taught before.

And when the other riders befriend him, they are all like, he was never useless he's just never been taught how to do any of this stuff that's second nature to the rest of them.

I hoped it would be clear that its Astrid... She definitely would have been more recognizable in her regular attire and colored, BUT SHES IN HER PJS, so is hiccup . .. 💤 the one with Toothless & hiccup I drew today, it's a more loose sketchy style but I really like it🐟🐟🫧
