Summary: Amid marriage problems, two neighbours find themselves gravitating towards each other.
Tonight just wasn't your night! Three times you have attempted to go to bed-THREE TIMES-and still not a wink of sleep granted to you. Whether it be your phone chirping, your daughter crying or your neighbour's dog barking, something always seemed to keep you awake. This being why when your fourth attempt was interrupted by an insistent banging, you completely blew your lid!
Marching downstairs with not a single weapon in hand, you hastily unlocked the door and swung it open to come face to face with your ex-husband. Just like that, all hope for a good night's sleep flew out the window.
"There she is! My darling WIFE!" Charles spat, stumbling into the rocking chair that sat beside your front door. "You having a good night, baby?"
Not having room to deal with his bullshit, you waltzed out onto your porch and shoved him down the three steps leading up to your door. It amazed you how he was even able to withhold his balance since it was clear that he had been drinking.
"What the fuck is wrong with you!" You screeched, hoping the malice in your voice told him just how aggravating his presence was to you. "Our daughter is right upstairs!"
The mention of his little girl struck a chord in him, reminding him of why he was here in the first place.
"Exactly! That's my problem!" He roared. "Our daughter is only metres away from a kiddy killer!"
Okay, now you were way past being livid. Not only were you sick of the game 'who's the worst parent', but you had enough of people trash-talking Jacob Barber. In your eyes, he will always be the innocent little boy who used to purposely kick his ball into your yard, hoping to con you into giving him a taste of whatever delicacies you had been cooking up in the kitchen.
"Leave him out of this!" You hissed.
"Why? Are you afraid his daddy might hear me? Good! I hope he does! It will finally give me the chance to kick his ass!"
His confession provoked a giggle from your lips. There was no way your dead beat of an ex-husband could so much as graze the god-like specimen next door, let alone kick his ass. The thought of it was way too bizarre for you to be able to take the threat seriously.
"Yeah. You like that baby?"
Unfortunately, it appeared that the said deadbeat failed to recognise that you were laughing at him, not with him. Thus, leading him to cage you up against the porch railing with a suggestive smirk written across his lips.
Not having the stomach to allow this man to touch you any further, you tiptoed up to his ear and seductively whispered. "What I LIKE is the thought of that beefy dilf next door kicking your ass so far up this lawn you will be tasting my mother's dahlias for weeks!"
Suddenly, his suggestive grip tightened to the point crescent marks were engraved into your skin. The flirty smile shifted into a dark, twisted sneer and all humour dissipated into nothing but pure rage. You had provoked the beast, meaning now you were going to pay for it.
"Listen here, bitch!" He growled, ignorant to the whimper that left your lips as he grasped your hair. "I've had enough of this fake successful ex-wife act! Now, you're going to get on your knees and suck my dick like the little prostitute you are!"
Fear engulfed your body like a wave against the shore. Every inch of your body began to tremble at the far too familiar look in his eyes. It was the same one he had given to you many times before he used your body as a punching bag. The difference is, it looked a lot darker now, leading you to believe your punishment if you do not comply will be worse than imaginable.
"Everything alright over there?"
The voice of Andy Barber reached your ears, causing a spark of hope to inflict itself into your chest. You wanted to take back all the negative comments you had ever made about him working late, for it was that what caused him to come upon your currently crumpled form.
"Yeah. Just go on inside, pal!" Your ex dismissed, paying the man no mind.
Tearing your gaze away from the eyes that continuously haunted your dreams, you willed yourself to leer into the speckled globes of your saviour. He appeared to be having a silent battle with himself. You knew it was because he had most likely grown tired of escorting this man off of your premises. Still, you knew there was a part of him that couldn't allow you to be hurt.
It made you wonder if this could be what caused him and his wife to argue almost every night. Maybe she didn't like how her husband always seemed to swing to your aid-it's exactly why you have refused his help in the past. Not that you got anywhere as Andy dismissed you every single time.
"I wasn't talking to you!" Andy scoffed. "I was talking to her."
Kind eyes observed your quivering figure seeming to be making sure there was not a single mark tainting your skin. Andy familiarised himself with each freckle on your face until he slowly lowered his inspection down your body. It wasn't till he came across the bottom half of your figure did his jaw clench, indicating that he wasn't at ease with what he saw.
Curious, you tilted your head as far as it could go and came across a site that provoked a gasp from your lips. Due to the amount of adrenaline pumping through your veins, you had failed to feel your knees scuffing against the hard gravel. If it weren't for Andy, you probably wouldn't have noticed the crimson liquid painting your flesh.
"Is that right?" Charles grunted, roughly raising you from the ground and pinning your back to his chest. "Well, honey. Why don't you tell Mr Barber here to BUZZ OFF so we can get back to business? Okay?" At the end of his sentence, he placed a teasing kiss upon your neck. Amid your disgust, you failed to notice the warning look that said Barber was giving your assailant.
Now, you were at a loss of what to do. Do you give in to Charles and suffer in ways that encouraged you to divorce him in the first place? Or do you push aside your independence to seek out your gracious neighbour's help? A part of you felt like you had to turn Andy away, for you didn't want to ruin his marriage any more than you have already, yet the thought of letting your ex into the home where your daughter slept caused bile to rise in your throat.
Straightening your shoulders, you blinked away your tears and looked at your neighbour in his ocean blue eyes. "Please, don't leave me alone with him!"
At the sound of your disobedience, Charles let out a vicious yell. "You fucking bitch!" He then tossed your body to the ground, permitting a shriek from your quivering lips.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Andy growled, shoving Charles away from where you lay. "That's the mother of your child!"
Stumbling to the ground, Charles seemed to sober up at the mention of your daughter. He'd done it again, screwed up any chance he had at being in Lilly's life, in your life. All because your friend had informed him that you still allow Jacob near your daughter. Like he was such a saint!
Releasing a scoff at the drunken fool, Andy decided to trade his attention away from him and instead assisted you in standing from the solid concrete.
"Are you okay?" He whispered, delicately tracing the back of your hand with his thumb.
Nodding your head, you swallowed down the onslaught of tears that threatened to escape your irises. "Yes." You breathed, staring into his alluring eyes.
Maybe Laurie was right to be threatened by your relationship with her husband since the emotions that you were feeling at that moment were far from innocent.
"I'm so sorry, Y/N. I'm so sorry!" Your ex blabbered on, sobbing into the earth that caressed your feet.
As cruel as you may sound, you felt no sympathy for the man that had caused you so much grief. He had brought this on himself, and you weren't going to allow him the chance to walk all over you anymore.
"Go home, Charles!" You demanded. "And sober up! Coz come morning, I'll be filing for full custody of Lillian!"
The information caused a dark look to overtake his features.
"Good luck." He smirked, sending a chill up your spine.
Just as you were about to question him on his sudden confidence, Andy was escorting you back inside your home.
