(She/Her) Fandoms: Super Mario, Steven Universe, Miraculous Ladybug, My Little Pony (and a few others) Super Mario Galaxy Movie hype!!! Not spoiler free, proceed with caution. Creator of the ask blogs The Lustrous Yellow Diamond and Ask Smol Bowser. (Yes I love the villains so much)
I have a Discord server that’s pretty chill, if you wanna join and chat about cartoons, games, art, and my own concept art for my blogs!
Also if you wanna read the comic from the beginning, here’s a link:
Please note that once you arrive, you won’t be able to speak right away. This is because I started manually assigning roles to prevent raids and spam from bots and trolls. I do check the server multiple times a day, so don’t be shy and stick around, and I will give you permissions to speak there.
I'm gonna go ahead and pin this to my main blog so that it can reach more people. My Ask Yellow Diamond blog is technically unfinished, but I did write out a bullet point ending so that you can have some sense of closure, and I'll be linking that here as well.
Why Peach and Rosalina's backstory in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie doesn't actually contradict anything in the video games, and how their relationship fits into the Mario canon
So there is a very popular misconception that they completely changed Rosalina's backstory from the Galaxy game, but that's actually not true. She just told a different story, one that was centered more on Peach than her adopted Luma family (and why would that even be necessary when that entire storybook is in the video game?) I'll now go through and answer the most common objections:
1: Rosalina didn't mention having a sister in the Galaxy game, therefore she cannot have one
True, in the video games Rosalina never mentioned having a younger sister, only a mother, father, and brother. But that doesn't mean she couldn't have a sister, just that she didn't mention her. I'd compare it to Pinkie Pie's backstory from Friendship is Magic.
Her backstory is first detailed in season 1 where she throws a party for her family, but in that story, only 2 sisters are shown. Later in season 4, the writers decided that Pinkie should have a third sister, so they created Maud Pie and placed her in the photograph of that moment even though she wasn't originally present in the scene. That's not a retcon, simply an addition to Pinkie's story because it's not that hard to explain how an additional sister could have been present at her party.
A retcon is when new lore is added that gives us information that cannot possibly be true at the same time as the older information.
2: Rosalina and Peach were "born from stardust" therefore they can't have parents in the movies, but Rosalina had parents in the Galaxy game, so this is a contradiction
Rosalina never actually said that, here is the exact sentence in the storybook:
"The two sisters were made of stardust."
Note that Rosalina said "made of" rather than "born from" stardust. Being made of something refers to the material components that compose an individual, rather than their parentage. The reason why Rosalina mentions that she and Peach are made of stardust is to explain why they have cosmic powers.
Plus, at the very end of the Galaxy game itself, this is what Rosalina has to say about being made of stardust:
"ALL new life carries the essence of the stars"
Which just means to say that this actually lines up perfectly with the video game lore. Heck, being made of stardust is even a thing in Minecraft's end poem which describes the atoms that constitute your being as originating from a star (which is how real life works too, it's just that it's not the same sort of magical properties as it is in a video game)
Plus, if they were spawned from a nebula, how are they sisters and yet different ages? Unlike sisters like Tinker Bell and Periwinkle (which I would argue is actually a retcon), baby Peach seems to be a toddler, probably around the age of 1-2, while Rosalina looks like a preteen. Is this just supposed to imply that Rosalina was just... basically an orphan with no family for 7-9 years of her life? There's a better explanation here.
3. How the game backstory explains what's going on
Circling back to the topic of Rosalina's other family, when she left to search for Luma's mama, she was all alone. She took things like her dad's telescope, but there is no mention of her telling her family that she's leaving.
In fact, every time Rosalina mentions her family, it's in the context of the fact that she misses them dearly that that she can't return home because they are gone. While she only mentions where her mother is buried, if her father and brother were somehow still alive on that planet, why wouldn't she return home to them?
The whole journey to find Luma's mom was a distraction from the pain Rosalina felt from losing her family and living as an orphan. That if she took on responsibility for someone else then she wouldn't have to think about her own pain. She can't go back because there is no one home for Rosalina to return to, but now she has built a new home for her Lumas, so she stays with them instead and quietly meditates on her past instead.
So here's the thing: the games already established that Rosalina lived alone as an orphan for a time. This is where baby Peach comes in.
The two of them had been living alone out in the universe, and no Lumas in sight, so Rosalina must have sent Peach down that pipe before she found Luma (and she's around the same age here too, so it can't have been long after) After losing her father, brother, and mother, the only living relative Rosalina had who really kept her going, forcing her to mature way too quickly, was her little sister Peach. That traumatic family separation? Must have been so hard on her, but she couldn't let anyone hurt Peach even if it meant growing up apart, but this also perfectly fits within the themes of the Galaxy game too.
This is from the new Galaxy 2 storybook, where Rosalina is trying to comfort the distraught Lu over the separation of her and her twin, where we get insight into her personal experience. While it's commonly assumed Rosalina is referring to her mother, if her mother was dead and buried, why would she believe that they would reunite again?
4. How it all fits into the canon
I'm gonna preface this by saying that I've accepted that the movie universe is different from the one depicted in the video games. While there could be an argument to make that the first movie's story could exist somewhere in the timeline as the games never really gave the Mario brothers a proper origin story, it is a definitive fact that the manner in which Mario meets Bowser Jr and Rosalina for the first time is different in both universes. I can also understand why they would do this because it would be nearly impossible to introduce these characters and worlds to audiences in a matter that somehow fits into every game's timeline neatly without compromising the ability to make a workable film.
However, this does NOT mean that there is absolutely no impact that the movies' creative choices have on the video games. They can be separate but parallel universes, which was a concept that was explored quite well in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam. This game establishes that the Paper Mario games are in a separate universe contained within the pages of a book, but they're still canon. Things happened in the Paper Universe that didn't happen in the main one. (And as a side note, you can see personality differences between the characters too, like how Paper Luigi is a lot more bold and brash, and Paper Mario is a lot quieter in comparison to their flesh and blood counterparts)
But things that do remain consistent are character relationships. Mario and Luigi are always brothers, Bowser and Bowser Jr are always father and son. Especially if the whole point of the movies is to help introduce new fans to the characters and worlds, it wouldn't make sense for Rosalina and Peach to be sisters in one universe but not the others. Which leads me to me last point.
5. This was always the intention of the Mario team at Nintendo since Super Mario Galaxy came out
In a Prima game guide from 2007, it was said that Rosalina's character design resembles Peach because the idea was considered that the two of them would be related. I'm guessing that the reason why it didn't make it into the final game is because they just didn't have a place for it in the story at the time, but they intentionally kept those features in. This is actually quite common when doing behind the scenes stuff with long running TV shows. For example, in the Steven Universe artbooks, it's said that the writers had ideas for Steven separating from his gem in episode ideas all the way back in season one, but they couldn't find a place for that until the season five finale. They always planned for Rose to be Pink Diamond, too.
Koizumi was the one who wrote the Galaxy storybook and even wanted it to be turned into a physical children's book one day, which eventually happened last year. Nothing in the text had changed, and I'm sure he knows exactly what he's doing here. This isn't some outside crew just running in and changing things because they just feel like it, it's the same people who did the game.
From a BTS video:
"There are some scenes in the games that sort of allude to them being blood relatives." Rosalina's mother highly resembles Peach with her hairstyle and earring for example:
Even Super Radiant Peach (which I was spoiled on) is a form that resembles both Rosalina and her mother.
The other thing about all this is that not once did any of the Nintendo staff ever step out to clarify that the two of them being sisters is something that ONLY applies to the movie universe. In fact, Miyamoto himself implied the opposite in an interview with Nintendo Dream.
Besides, it's not like Rosalina and Peach being sisters would drastically alter the gameplay all that much. Maybe it would be mentioned in future RPG dialogue, or official character descriptions, or their limited voice clips in a manner like "Way to go, sis!" in a sports title for example. Would that kind of thing really break your enjoyment of the video game for you?
I just got one of these this morning so make sure if you get tagged in the comments with something saying that your account features are being suspended unless you verify, block and move on! They're probably trying to hack your account or something.
Alright, I finally finished the poster for the rumored Donkey Kong movie! I got addicted back into Donkey Kong Bananza again, specifically the DLC mode, but the game as a whole is just phenomenal, and I have several ideas for how I think a DK movie would be super epic (and I even wrote a climax scene for what I'd love to see)
Keep in mind, I'm not even the biggest DK fan, but I did enjoy Mario vs Donkey Kong and Bananza.
Also I've spoken with some folks and maybe some people will find it controversial to make Mario a main character in a Donkey Kong movie, but considering he's basically the only character DK had in depth conversations with in the first movie, and their rivalry is iconic, dating back to their first game, and because DK was causing chaos in Mario's hometown, I just feel like he's gotta be there.
But of course I gotta include the DKC crew, but I don't think we'd really be able to fit in the slightly more obscure Kongs outside of cameos and Easter eggs.
Teen Pauline is also iconic because of Bananza, so she's gotta be in there, too.
Yeah uh... This came about after a discussion on Mario RPG Central about the next movie's antagonist being Bowser's father, although a character like this obviously never appeared in the games.
AU where Peach is a normal girl from Brooklyn who meets a mutant turtle and they become childhood friends, before getting swept into another world where they're stuck dealing with the worst sibling rivalry imaginable
While this AU is very cute, I can't help but think that there is a very distinct possibility that in the movie continuity, Peach and Bowser really were childhood friends. There is a whole lot of detail that was skipped over between when the Toads adopted Peach and when she became a princess.
I wonder if Bowser is still in love with Peach in this AU though...
Guys I need help, How do I stay focused on one thing at a time?
I have WAY too many plans for projects, some I've talked about, others not, but if I don't focus on one thing at a time then I know I won't be able to do all of them.
Case in point:
A Donkey Kong Movie Prediction Comic AND a Donkey Kong Movie poster
Continuing the story of Ask Smol Bowser
This one fanfic of "The Trials of the Bowsers" that I promised
A short comic about Teen Pauline
And these are just the ones that I have STARTED on. This doesn't even get into how the Bowser Jr and Mario comic I posted yesterday was only supposed to be a ONE PANEL thing, and somehow today I came up with more ideas of how I could continue it for a short while.
I've had some crossover cartoon ideas...
I STILL wanted to do another aftermath songfic/comic thing about how Luigi is doing after the events of the Galaxy movie...
Heck, I totally abandoned my Bowser's Inside Story comic from several years ago...
And that's also not counting the character analysis essays sitting in my drafts...
I NEED to know what to do! How do I bring all these fantasy ideas out of my head, into a reality that I can share with you all, when my imagination keeps growing bigger than what I am capable of outputting? I suppose there's always the fact that I do not use my free time efficiently (like scrolling social media in boredom instead of working on art) but everything just seems so overwhelming.
I COULD use the "I'm busy" excuse, but I KNOW that's not true because of the aforementioned time that I literally waste on social media and the fact that I was more consistent with comics when I was a high school student going to school 5 days a week.
And look, I know you guys also might come up in the comments and say "It's okay! Don't burn yourself out!" Look, I am PERFECTLY well aware that this is not an obligation that I have and it is a hobby. I could literally quit Tumblr tomorrow and life would just go on for everyone else and no one would suffer for it.
I WANT to keep doing this and I struggle finding the discipline necessary to be consistent with even a hobby. There is a satisfaction of bringing something to completion, and a disappointment of dreams that are just within reach but you keep putting yourself in your own way. I have no shortage of ideas, I have no shortage of time, so I don't have artist's block and I can't say I'm too busy either so what is even wrong with me?
