There was recently a copyright infringement case in YA and I need everyone to know that the following sentence was in the legal decision:
“Hot, sexy, dangerous boys, central to virtually all young adult romance novels, cannot be copyrighted.”
“Regarding setting, the court held that both works taking place in Alaska high schools was not protectable because Alaska is a public place and setting a teen novel in a high school is a common genre convention.”
Freeman v. Deebs-Elkenaney | Loeb & Loeb LLP
I've read the entire decision (skimming over the purely legal precedent/definitions bit) and here are some of my favorite bits:
‘Nuclear Family Month’ is so funny as a concept. I have never seen a nuclear family worth celebrating.
The Addams
Do Grandmama, Uncle Fester and the rotating cast of possibly existent cousins mean nothing to you? 😔

THE GOLDEN GIRLS 2.05 — Isn't It Romantic? — 08.11.86 Betty White as Rose Nylund Lois Nettleton as Jean
1986!!
Golden Girls was so incredibly progressive for its time and not even slightly afraid to be loud about it. They talked about queer people, about race, about ableism, and they made it central and overt. They talked about things that mattered, and they never punched down, and they were allies off the stage too.
Reblogging this again to add some context for anyone who may not know. In the 80's, being outed as gay could get you blacklisted in Hollywood. It ruined people's careers.
Bea Arthur and Betty White both suffered damage to their careers for standing up against racism and homophobia. Back in the 50s Betty White hosted a variety show that was canceled because she featured a black dancer and doubled down when they told her to stop.

[Description: a looping bouncy animation of grace and Rocky from project hail mary. Grace throws himself onto rocky for a hug, smiling and nuzzling his face to the top of Rocky's xenonite covered carapace. Rocky brings a claw up to ruffle Grace's hair and grace throws himself even more on top of rocky, rocky wrapping his arms around grace. End description.]
I normally dont care about political intrigue/plots in fiction. HOWEVER Id LOVE to see Temeraires first parliament session (and in general Perscitia and Temeraire steamrolling idiots who still consider them talking animals)
My very first tiger drawing and my latest
Your skill level is unquestionable but listen.
I love him.
me also. as well.
This is the COOLEST thing I’ve seen in AGES. You both completely made my entire week.
RORE~
i love the word jumbotron. the most american word, beating out any sad contender the likes of “burger”. immediately you get “jumbo”, the most american size; land of the Big Gulp. “tron”, like the movie, implying some vague cybernetic concept that hints at its purpose. then you find out, oh, it’s the giant screen at football games. the thing that sometimes puts you on blast for the most mortifying 45 seconds of your life, if you are so lucky. feel like (or become) a star, however briefly. get your affair blasted on national tv. everything about the word speaks to such an american way of living. huge fan
And, much like burger, the word and very concept of the Jumbotron did not actually originate in the U.S. but rather was quickly perfected into the freakish culturally ubiquitous concept it is today.
Which again much like burgers, may truly encapsulate just how fucking USian it is
