This post originates from fruits basket, definitely. I probably wouldn't have any interest in the Chinese zodiac if it weren't for Natsuki Takaya's work.
However, I'm not focusing on fruits basket in this post but it's core subject and element, the story of the Chinese zodiac.
I don't know a whole lot about the Chinese zodiac but according to fruits basket, as well as some other things I've read, all the animals are invited to a banquet or party held be God. At the Said gathering, God bestows each attendy with a gift, that gift being a place in a router, a twelve year cycle. Each year is represented by a different animal, starting with the rat and ending with the boar or pig, or whatever you choose to call it. It's only now just come to my attention that this year is the end of another twelve year cycle.
As many may already know, although there the cycle is twelve years long and twelve animals already fit that quota, there is in fact a thirteenth animal; the cat. Why wasn't the cat granted a year in the story of the zodiac and made the cycle thirteen years long? Well, I can't really explain it but it's something to do with a lunar calendar that had something to do with following Chinese astrology. But I'm focusing more on the story then the zodiac and the calendar itself.
In most stories, the rat was mean in some way, shape or form, to the cat;
The initial impression we get in fruits basket is that the rat tricks the cat by telling him that the banquet is the day after, though by the end of the story we're given another abbreviation, in which the cat rejects an eternal life of a repetitive cycle.
Now that I'm back on topic with what this post is about, there are many different versions of the story behind the assigned animals, I had a thought.
In one way or another, each member of the zodiac including the cat received an invitation to a banquet, as well as quite possibly an offer they didn't want to refuse from God.
God lives in heaven, an eternal place, a place out of this world, out of reach from the living. Perhaps God's invitation to heaven required an exchange, specifically for their life. If they gave up their life to God, they'd earn a spot in the twelve year cycle.
Now for the cat. Perhaps in this twisted idea I have for the Chinese zodiac the rat isn't so sneaky and unkind. I'm sure I'll be contradicted but here's my idea, the rat could have been a good guy and talked the cat out of giving up his life as he could see the cat had a whole life set out in front of him and didn't think that should go to waste.
So in the end, despite the rats reasoning for the cat to not join the other animals in this heavenly place, he's left feeling sad and alone, possibly even vengeful towards the rat because he'd missed out on this opportunity.

Conveying the intentions of the original manga
The original manga, which deeply moved its readers, was first serialized in Hana To Yume magazine (Hakusensha) from 1998, and then later, in 2001, received an anime adaptation. Now, after 18 years, the timeless masterpiece, “Fruits Basket”, will have a brand new anime. More than that, it has been announced the new anime will not continue the story where the 2001 series ended, but instead start at the beginning of the manga in a completely new production, retelling the story until the end. Of course, this is the first time to completely animate the story of “Fruits Basket”, so we spoke with producer Itou Motoki about what it’s like to work on the production.
“Although the original manga is 20 years old, the themes are universal and transcend time. We are striving for sophistication in all aspects of our visual effects, such as art, settings, and cinematography. We are also careful when we draw it to preserve the atmosphere and emotional weight of the original scenes. The series also has subtle and delicate psychological messages, so I talk with our director, Ibata Yoshihide, to make sure that mental imagery, the soundtrack, nuanced dialogue and so forth accurately convey those themes to audience members who are paying attention. Since the original manga is complete, we can give our production that special attention. We can work backwards and look at the story’s final outcome to make sure that the emotion of those episodes and scenes have the correctly nuanced facial expressions, poses, and scene compositions. Because we have the completed original work, we can consult it before and after we work on any given scenario, so we don’t have to fix or rearrange anything later. This way, there won’t be any inconsistency or discrepancy in the flow of the characters’ emotions. The dialogue and story won’t be presented only on the surface level, but the story’s deeper meanings and plot can be conveyed.”
It seems there was some trial and error in the creation of the character designs, in the effort to revive characters who have existed for 20 years. The original creator, Takaya Natsuki stated, “I wanted them to use new character designs because my own art changed so much during the time I was drawing ‘Fruits Basket’, and I didn’t think it would translate well in today’s animation styles.”
So we talked to the character designer for the anime, Shindo Masaru, who said it was “challenging, but very fun” to design the characters. “I tried my best to consciously make designs which accurately express their characters – Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, and everyone else. I felt a lot of pressure to get it right, and in the beginning, it really felt like I was struggling in the dark. I redesigned Tohru many, many times, each time subtly changing the balance, so she could be equally simple, pretty, and without any disagreeable features. Even so, I had so much fun working on her design!”
We were told that the house in which Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo live was drawn with unparalleled passion and commitment.
“In order to make the work persuasive visually, we didn’t quite use photographic realism, but instead arrived at a realty-like vision unique to animation. Schools, buildings, the surroundings of Shigure’s home, and others were designed and animated using real-life references. In order to increase the perfection of the work, I spent a lot of time taking pictures in many different locations for each scene and each cut. Director Ibata liked Kyoto locations in particular, and we took a 360° camera to shoot locations there. I hope that audiences will enjoy the work we’ve done for this new series.”
A world filled with attention to detail

Anime characters Mogeta and Ari (from the in-world anime) will, of course, also make appearances! They will have their own character designs, theme songs and casting, so please look forward to it!

uhm, so, hey..
I haven’t been very active on my account in a while, as such this is really just an “I’m still alive” post.
But anyway, might as well post something, if you don’t already know yet, there’s going to be a fruits basket reboot coming out next year and I’m super excited about it.
Tohru Honda is so so so courageous and I love her dearly
I love that I logged into Tumblr and this was the first thing I saw.

So I know it's not the worst in fruits basket and I've probably taken the dialogue the wrong way but I read this as “I've got a fever and it's your fault" or some illness or whatever. And it's just
That's the stupidest bull I've ever seen.

Well I got Fruits basket another since they had it in the book shelf I went to, now I just need to get 11 & 12 of the collectors edition
Reblog if you think the mom on the right is just as cute as the Mom on the left

I haven't posted in a while so I'm posting this, I guess, just added some colour and used the Orton(?) Filter on PicsArt- I just kinda like that filter.
Also, I'm actually pretty close to finish collecting all the collectors edition, hopefully I'll be getting “fruits basket another” too and I'll have tons more to fangirl about.

Usually I prefer Kyo over Yuki since I used to dislike Yuki quite a lot but this chapter made me feel really bad for him. He'd pretty much only just been told by Akito that everybody hates him. From the look on his face, Yuki looks as though he really wanted to find a friend straight away but then he's rejected straight away, which in his little head, probably only proved or backed up what Akito said… so it must have really hurt being rejected by the cat like that, I can sort of understand Kyo's hatred for Yuki but this just made me want to cry so much
Since the second Tohru had woken up in the morning she had believed it to be an admirable and lovely day and as always she was grateful to be alive. As the day progressed, she'd been working hard on her chores in her merry little way as Kyo and Yuki thought all morning, which was nothing out of the ordinary. Before she knew it, the day had flown passed without any warning and it was already getting late. Tohru didn't have work that night which meant she had plenty of time to cook dinner. Unfortunately, as fate would have it, she'd somehow forgotten about grocery shopping.
Tohru figured she'd take a different route to the conveniant store for last minute shopping for once, since she'd been meaning for a last minute walk anyway. She just so happened to be walking past the Sohma compound when a gust of wind barely left her standing, she then stopped in her tracks, hesitating to take another step forward.
“I wonder how everyone else is doing…” She only mumbled to herself, brushing strands of her long brown hair back behind her ear. Walking past the Sohma compound proved to be an uneasy and almost overwhelming task for some reason.

I'm not entirely sure whether I've put this in my first post, either way I'm putting it here..
This was going to be a roleplay account but I've never once used it for that even though that's what I'd prefer to do, it's mostly because I have zero confidence and I'm not very good at talking to people when it comes to starting the conversation even if it's online. More to the point; I think I'm going to start writing some in character stuff soon, regardless of whether it gets attention or responses. (Sorry I really am no good at approaching others unless I've spoken to them in the past or know them well)
Anyway, from now on I'll make sure to put " «🍙» " in the title of a post that isn't in character, this is all I wanted to say.
