All y'all gather 'round and hear the songs! More to come soon.
I hope the entire world will see this and we can all laugh and smile together
The advent of SoCal Inflection
This clip: https://www.instagram.com/p/BAfe3vdI6GA/?taken-by=fuckjerry.tv has me thinking of the omnipresent (at least in teens) inflection used in just about EVERY statement made by any young person, ever, nowadays. Don’t get me wrong--the clip is hilarious. But the inflection. The calculated and irrelevant fluctuation of pitch, rising and falling in basically the same place for each sentence. Ugh. It’s used to express everything from stupidity to disgust to deep feelings and genuine genius but it sounds utterly ridiculous. When did they all start talking like this?
This is the part
--where I realize how much fight I’ve lost. Not vision, not imagination, and certainly not music. Just fight. Dates, conflicts, funds, by-laws...
Like, can’t everything just work?
It’s so comfortable to be comfortable.
The classical music community on Tumblr has seriously gotten so big. I feel like I’m missing out on so many blogs! If you’re a classical musician, reblog this so I can follow you! :D And if I already follow you, reblog so your followers can see!

If there’s one thing that makes me doubt my long-term commitment to teaching music in the Bay Area, it’s the intensity with which I relate to music. The students here (in my experience, anyway) are mostly unwilling to show that level of commitment, and frankly I find it underwhelming and disappointing. I’ve had the same experience when working all over the West Coast and in the Northeast, too.
I was blessed--as a young child--to have directors and teachers who were deeply inspired and dedicated, and weren’t interested in kids who weren’t interested. I know that all happened ca. 1987-2000, but surely people haven’t changed THAT much.
Well. I guess I did live in Indiana.
The talent is here in spades. But why would such self-aware, talented kids want to stagnate in the upper echelons of mediocrity when they could really dig in and be incredible? Why smile vapidly when you’re really holding back happy tears? Why stare blankly when you want to cry?
GAH.

In other news, I’m 34. I feel mostly the same as I did when I was 33, sorta the same as 32, and vastly different than I did when I was 31. (It’s just a number, blah blah.) Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine said we’d always have “just more questions... different kind.” Truer the older I grow.

ANYWAY.
To all my very few friends here: How are YOU?
Just dropped by to see if I missed anything, and I saw something from "thatgunner[something]guy" on your page and I seriously did a double take, only to see that you don't, in fact, follow that person (which would have seriously surprised me and marked a different epoch in my understanding of how you deal with this site! lol), but had taken it from chris (hotankles) instead. So how you durrin girl?
Girl I's good! I actually do use this site for more things than whining about my feelings and map-sturbation, though I don't do a great job of following others. I don't know why. To answer your question: I'm good! Heavy teaching load at SOTA, and other things are coming along... Brian is doing reasonably well. He's stressed by his work life right now and I don't always know how to help, though I try in my own way (read: wine and food and distraction). I am feeling mostly okay about my life (if not the rest of the world around me). How is YOU? I miss you a lot! I can't believe it's only been a year since we jumped off the United choirbus. It feels like way longer, doesn't it?All the loves.

I hated being a singer today, and I failed at it. Tomorrow is a new day, I suppose. Ugh.
March, you can go ahead and die
I’ve felt pretty much awesome about all the work I’ve done this month (sorry to brag), but there has just been too damn much of it. If Jesus would resurrect Himself already, we could all resume our regularly scheduled programming.
Obviously for me that involves far less sobriety and far more time away from this fucking laptop.
