What the United States, Russia, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Uganda have in common is that *technically*, itâs illegal to murder queer people.
Socially and spiritually, however, are other matters entirely.
People always talk their right to take a stand against queer peopleâs âlifestyle,â that hate speech is protected by the First Amendment, that âdisapprovingâ of the existence of queer people is not, in and of itself, hate speech at all, but merely freedom of choice and freedom of religion.
They never want to take responsibility for the kind of hostile atmosphere those freedoms generate. They donât claim ownership of the social ânormalitiesâ their ârationalâ or âreligiousâ dogma creates.
They want to be able to whip people into a rabid moral frenzy, indoctrinate them into believing that queer people are âunnatural,â âa threat to civil society,â or âthe enemies of God and all things that are good,â but stop short at implicating themselves whenever a successfully trained convert accomplishes the unspeakable.
Plausible deniability: âI never told anyone to murder anyone else. I just said that queers are sub-human/demon-spawn that are destroying our society/God says to stone to death. I canât be held responsible for what anyone else does with that information.â
Every genocide begins with the rhetorical insistence upon the dehumanization of one group by another (for all sorts of âreasonsâ) and denial of any culpability for what the rhetoric incites.
But that the dehumanization rhetoric is designed to incite violence against those being dehumanized is an indisputable fact. The strategy is that the orators are trying to get as little blood on their hands as possible by ensuring that someone else is acting on their orders.
This was senseless, but donât think for a moment that it wasnât strategic. While it probably wasnât organized, per se, donât think for a moment that isnât part of the larger American social war against queer people.
Anyone who has ever given voice to queerantagonism is implicated right alongside the human being who was actually able to shut off their heart and remove their spirit long enough to carry out the gruesome act.
Rest in peace, Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson.
