What is the Star Wars prayer??

In the Episcopal Church of America's 1979 Book of Common Prayer, there are four Eucharistic prayers (the prayers said before the presentation of the sacraments) in contemporary language. Eucharistic prayer C contains this:

This is (among certain sets of Episcopalians) sometimes mocked as 'the Star Wars prayer'. Honestly, I don't feel the need to hold it up for scorn, but it does very much feel like a product of its times.

On 25 December 1956, members of the Ku Klux Klan placed 16 sticks of dynamite under the bedroom window of Fred Shuttlesworth, who was asleep at the time. Shuttlesworth awakened in time to save himself and his family, but the house was destroyed. “If I were you I’d get out of town as quick as I could,” a police office (who was also a Klan member) told him. The next day Shuttlesworth filed a lawsuit challenging the segregation laws of Alabama.

Shuttlesworth became pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1953 and Chairman of the Alabama chapter of the NAACP in 1956. After the state declared the organization illegal, Shuttlesworth established the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights in June 1956, which continued the work of the NAACP and was instrumental in the civil rights movement.

Shuttlesworth survived at least 2 more murder attempts. In the summer of 1957 he was beaten by the Klan and his wife was repeatedly stabbed, and a year later a parishioner spotted a bomb planted in the church. He died of natural causes in 2011 at age 89.

Zuppa Toscana

Ingredients

6 russet potatoes, sliced into half circles

1lb sausage (hot italian sausage recommended)

32 oz chicken broth

1 yellow onion, cut however you want

Garlic - think "what's a lot of garlic?" double that amount, minced

1 bunch kale - stem removed, tear it up (can be larger than "bite sized pieces", as they will wilt)

1 cup heavy whipping cream

Seasoning - I do not measure these and I never will. Season to taste. (Paprika, Salt, Pepper, Oregano, Bay Leaves, Cayenne, Cumin)

Instructions

In a large soup pot, brown the sausage and break apart/crumble as it cooks. Throw the onion and spices in there, mix that all up and cook till the sausage is cooked thoroughly. Add minced garlic, cook for 1-2 min.

Add chicken stock and potatoes. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. I let it simmer for about 15 min, longer (maybe 25-30?) if you want the potatoes to break down more and create a chowdery texture.

Add the kale. Stir it in until wilted and doesn't seem like too much kale anymore. Maybe 2-3 min.

Turn off the stove. Add heavy cream a little at a time while stirring it in.

Serve and top it off as you see fit. I like shredded parmesan and red pepper flakes

One of my favorite soups! I saw the first panel and I ingredient went ZUPPA!

I usually substitute half-and-half, instead of heavy cream. (That's how mom made it. I might try the cream next time.) Spinach is a good substitute for the kale.

Also, most other versions of this have bacon, but YMMV.

It was served at Olive Garden, but the last time I went to one, the staff told me they no longer had it on the menu. It was really the only reason I went there. So let me tell you how much this comic/recipe really makes me happy!

In undergrad, there was this Greek diner at the corner of the same property the university was on, so you didn't have to cross the highway on foot to get there, and everyone ate there all the time.

Their lemon chicken rice soup was legendary. I mean, gallon to-go containers legendary. So naturally, when we graduated and moved away, we had to figure out how to make it.

And naturally, when we went back, ... ours had become much superior. We had more vegetables, better stock, and tailored it over time to what we liked. And so we have been making it ever since, because of the restaurant that forced us to make it for ourselves when we moved away. This was a gift, as much as any giant to-go container.

On the other hand, I have been trying to make Lou Malnati's deep dish forever, and while we are satisfied with the pizza I make—so much so that none of the pizzas we can get around us on the South Side now satisfies—that's only because there isn't an actual Lou Malnati's in range.
