On Etiquette

Please of course be mindful and kind on my blog. I have never had an issue, and everyone I have ever interacted with has been lovely. I do not expect to have a problem, but I wanted to put the expectations out in the open.

Blocking 🚫 I routinely go through my followers and block bots and porn bots. If you are not a bot, please add a profile pic and maybe a title to your blog, so I can see there are signs of life and that you are a person.

If you are homophobic, racist, misogynistic, antisemitic, ageist, bigoted, or just downright mean, I will block you 👍

Last post about the kiwi flowers, I promise.

They're starting to fade away and tiny fruits are appearing.

Moving on to lots of pictures of tiny fuzzy kiwis.

I see this confusion allllll the time at my workplace so listen. I see customers all the time who are convinced they can only plant perennials and not annuals because they don't want to replant anything every year.

Plants are considered "perennials" if they return for at least two years in the garden in your cold hardiness growing zone. That does not mean they live forever or will actually reliably come back every year.

Some winters are too cold, sometimes it's too wet or too dry, sometimes the soil where you planted it doesn't drain well enough or is too alkaline, sometimes a perennial is simply natural short-lived and will reproduce itself from seed if conditions are right.

Most perennials naturally have a short window of time that they bloom. A lot of heavily-cultivated short-lived perennials are bred to bloom more which means not setting seed, which means not reproducing themselves. Often even if they do, their offspring will not be true to the parent plant's genetics and will have reverted or hybridized. (Not to even get into the discussion around planting cultivars of natives vs species ecotypes.)

Point is, (caveat that this is highly dependent on your climate), if you want a reliable showy flowering plant that keeps going all summer, perennials are generally not what you're looking for as a default first choice. Perennials are wonderful, please do your research and plant them but don't do it with unrealistic expectations.

You also do not at all need to spend tons of money on annuals for pretty flowers all summer. There are lots of easy annuals that can be grown from cheap seed and saved for next year (or sometimes even self seed). Go for zinnias, marigolds, cosmos and you're set.

When you’re busy 🫐

Accept that exercise needs to be a non-negotiable part of your life.

Eat sufficient protein at every meal. Not because it’s currently a buzzword, but because you should have always been doing that and need to keep it up even when a new food group inevitably trends.

Walk whenever you can. Calls, errands, waiting, etc.

You deserve proper rest even if you didn’t get everything done.

Keep healthy staples on autopilot and easily accessible. Things that don’t need to be cooked, 5 minute meals, snacks you can toss in your bag, etc.

Water before and after caffeine.

Ten minutes of movement beats zero.

Batch cook once, eat well all week. If not full meals then whatever key ingredients you can.

Protect your mornings from chaos. Let them be as absolutely slow as your responsibilities allow it to be.

Train for health, strength, and longevity as your top priority. You don’t have to strive for a specific visual outcome.

Stretch, even if it’s while you wait for your pot of water to boil or are letting the bathtub fill up.

Limit liquid calories.

Create a simple, repeatable routine.

Book checkups before there’s a problem.

Remember: being busy is not a reason to abandon healthy habits. It’s just time to rework them.

I'm seeing a lot of posts recently about how we have 1 year to get ready for the next major U.S. election. And not to be alarming but its actually much sooner than that.

The primaries for most states are in 6ish months. When we say 'vote them out', and it's a representative from your party, we are talking about voting them out in the primaries. If you wait to vote until Election Day in November, the only choices you'll have are the Republican and the Democrat candidate. So it's everyone's responsibility to be active in the primaries where we choose which democrat will be running.

Instead of being stuck with whatever democrat is the most popular, or has the most money, we can choose to elect someone who has more of a backbone and better politics, and maybe even someone who is Independent. But it means you have to vote in the elections leading up to November 3rd, 2026.

Make sure you're registered to vote!!!

Many states DO NOT allow you to register at the polling booths and have specific lengths of time you need to be registered beforehand, sometimes weeks or months out. My entire family despite voting last year all were "lasped" this year when voting in the midterms, but thankfully we live in a state you can register at the booth so we re-registered right there. SO MAKE SURE YOU'RE REGISTERED TO VOTE AND SHOW UP FOR PRIMARIES!! VOTE THESE PIECES OF SHIT OUT!!!!

Each spring in this tropical glasshouse, the Strongylodon macrobotrys (jade vine, emerald creeper) produces a show of pendent, turquoise flowers. This vigorous evergreen climber comes from the tropical rainforests of the Philippines, where it is endemic.
