The long-forgotten Barbie manga by Rene Kiyohara! In this chapter, originally appearing in the July 1984 issue of shoujo magazine Hitomi, Barbie and her friend Ellie learn all about the story behind Tanabata.

Lagoona was cancelled from Skulltimate Secrets: Garden Mysteries, and that got me thinking about all the possibilities of her doll, and especially with the budget constraints! Designer notes below:

Hair: Because I hate myself I decided to imagine what hairstyle they would go for if they used poly, like all the other dolls in this line. I settled for a simple side part, lilac money pieces with straight hair, since Lagoona actually doesn't have many straight haired dolls.

Make-up: The looks in this line are all dramatic upturned petal-like swoops, so I gave Lagoona some simple ocean waves on her top lid, and kept her freckles, while adding a tiny koi fish under her left eye.

Outfits: I decided on a swamp lily and kelp pattern for the mini dress, with a single strap look to distinguish her silhouette from others. Her mesh top is also similarily koi and kelp patterned. For the laced cami, I tried to keep the "one strip of lace only, and one black ribbon at most" rule. Same goes for the velvet skirt, where ribbons are limited.

Shoes: Garden eels!!!!! They just fit this theme so well, so I decided the straps would lead down to the heel, making it look like garden eels poking out of the sand. The second shoes are traditional South American sandals called caites, which are traditionally worn in Honduras (G3 Lagoona's birthplace). I made the weaving look a bit like piranha teeth, and added fins to emphasise the fish aspect.

Accessories: Corset is simply two koi fish circling a gem. Her teacup wafts bubbly waves with a small jellyfish. Her purse is a treasure chest with a kelp handle!!! I took a while with rhe snack, and decided on something savoury as Draculaura and Twyla are already bringing sweet treats. The little spoon is supposed to evoke an oyster shell with a little pearl.

It was really fun designing the doll, hopefully I can make her by customising a Lagoona!!!

Just clicked in my brain that, despite clearly riffing off a dream journal, at least according to g1 (though nothing in g3 contradicts this, afaik), is more akin to like... keeping track of what you eat every day. Kind of funny from that angle, ngl.

Some little Mirror Mi colour edits!

I saw someone say they didn’t like the pink on Suki so I was wondering if she didn’t have pink what would look good (also yeah I forgot about the pink in her headphones my bad)

Amora’s sleeves are so odd to me, they are so similar to her skin tone and it just does not look good :/ I wanted to keep the brown tone but I couldn’t quite find one that worked well so I went with red and pink which I think look a lot better

The green in Blaze’s sweater isn’t terrible but she reminds me of Freddie Krueger so I tried to make them more black, they look a bit too blue-toned but maybe I’ve been staring at them too long

And then lastly I saw someone say they that didn’t love Blaze’s very light lips, and while I love a light lip I think I would have liked to see a darker lip on our edgier girl, so I did a dark lip, a bright red lip, and a neutral lip which I didn’t expect to be my fave on her but i really like it!

You know what, since nearly everyone has been comparing MirrorMi and Moonspell Magic, I'll do a ranking for them too.

Suki Goldpetal (I love herrrr. I think the only things I don't like about her are the little bits of hair that stick up, and the pink in her colour palette, both of which I feel are pretty fixable. By far the best-executed doll of the line, a kintsugi teacup girl is perfect to represent feeling "fragile".)

Luna Skye (A bit weak design-wise, but I think she's rather pretty. The cloud-shaped patches of vitiligo are a neat concept, though I kind of wish the patcheds were a little bigger, because it's hard to notice from a distance. I do really like how where they intersect with her eyebrows, the latter is made lighter, though, that's a good touch! Outside of her sleep mask, though, she doesn't really give off "dreamy". Once again, her "aura" of "head in the cloud[s]" definitely feels more accurate. Also, her shoes don't feel like they quite match? I think if they'd subbed the roses for lilies of the valley (like the charms on her dress's bow) and made the green a little bluer-toned, they would've matched her much better.)

Blaze Maxx (A pretty strong design, but I feel like the execution is kind of mixed. I don't understand why they gave her a nude lip with this look, and I'm kind of confused by the bubble skirt. The lava shoes are objectively kinda ugly, but at the same time I kind of love them. I also don't know why they made the emotion she represents "electric", when she's so fire-themed? I think that her "aura", "fired up" suits her a lot better.)

Shai Meadows (Honestly, I just don't feel much of anything about her. Her pieces look very cute and high quality, and she absolutely comes across as "sheepish" (tee hee), but... I don't know, all her pale colours just kind of blend together for me. I'm also curious how her body looks without her clothes on, because the upper half of her legs not matching the rest of her is... curious.)

Amora Valentina (There's good elements here, I love her shoes and the hearts embedded in her legs, but... she really feels like an afterthought. There's no way her skintone wasn't a last minute change, with her skin colour being so close to that of her sleeves... I'm also not wild about her being blonde and blue-eyed. :/ The neapolitan hair could be cute, but I feel like it's just too much blonde to fit her.)

Akiko Kittyama (Straight-up, I can't stand her. 😭 I think the only thing I really like about her is her little fang. She activates the "ick" in my brain in the same way babytalking vtubers and Belle Delphine do... Full respect to people who like her, but she is DEEPLY not for me.)

made a little cactus girl to join the succulent collection. the spines are false lashes & a bit of a hassle to keep in order because they're so soft and bendy, but that might still be better than the doll actually stabbing me every time i pose her.

Dolls who are disabled + use service aids!

I wanted to make this post for disability pride month (July) because it is something important to me. Some people may ask “what about having a disability is prideful?” And it is honestly a great question because it does seem like something that absolutely sucks (and it does a lot of the time), but personally, I am very proud of how resilient, patient and caring my disabilities have made me, I’m proud of how myself and many others have come to advocate for our needs, I’m proud of who I am and my disabilities are a part of that.
