Indonesia is being silenced by fascist regime
Indonesia is in the middle of a crisis right now. The fascist regime is silencing the people as they continue to commit brutal violence against innocent civilians. They’ve banned posts on Instagram and TikTok, preventing my people from sharing the news to the world.
Main events:
Monday, 25/8/25: Protest for outrageous amount of hike in lawmaker’s pay in the middle of an economic crisis.
Thursday, 28/8/25: A motorcycle taxi driver named Affan Kurniawan (21) was run over and killed by a police armored vehicle during protest. (TW: distressing content)
Friday, 29/8/25: Widespread public outrage across Indonesia. Civilians destroy and burn down police stations in Jakarta, Bandung, Makassar, and many other cities, demanding justice for Kurniawan.
Saturday, 30/8/25: - People ransacked MP Ahmad Sahroni’s house amid unrest. - In Central Jakarta, around 8-9 PM, the government disabled TikTok live feature, cut off electricity in those areas, and start mass shooting on protestors on the streets. (TW: distressing content)
Things to note:
Current president Prabowo Subianto is a former military general who was responsible for the "enforced disappearance" of activists in 1997-98 under dictator Soeharto's New Order regime.
There are calculated efforts of certain parties to hijack the moment with provocation, trying to turn civilians against each other, telling them to target minorities, encourage looting and destroy public transport facilities - which will provide a pretext for the government to legitimize brutal violence against the civilians.
During all this chaos, many MPs are hiding abroad. MP Sahroni is in Singapore. Some other MPs are on a “business trip” in Australia.
News coverage in English:
Al-Jazeera reported that the president has issued “an apology.” — this is not entirely true. He did issue a statement, but he did not say a word of apology in it. Other than that, no misleading information on Al-Jazeera’s coverage so far. You can keep up with them on instagram @aljazeeraenglish or their website.
