SHOWoff’s Top 6 Netflix Gems
What you should be watching after you read this...
We’re all looking for guaranteed good entertainment and we crave good stories that are well told. This list has all that and more:
1. In Bruges - It’s just one of those movies that get’s better and better every time you watch it. Funny, sad, quotable, smart, and most of all...twisted. Colin Farrell is amazing, Brendon Gleeson will break your heart, and Ralph Fiennes will scare you. Plus it’s just hilarious how much Colin Farrell’s character hates Bruges. You’ll thank us after you watch it, and re-watch it.
2. Penny Dreadful - This show is only 3 seasons long, but that’s the joy of it. It’s dark, sexy, terrifying, and beautiful in just the right amounts. It takes the old horror movie monsters and makes the characters behind them incredibly interesting. Penny Dreadful is one of those shows that got lost in the Game of Thrones and Walking Dead tsunami, but it easily stands up to them and in some ways surpasses them. The imagery and the characters will stay in the back of your mind forever...
3. Voltron: Legendary Defender - And now for some lighter fair. Voltron is a remake of the show you either grew up watching or walked by a thousand times at Blockbuster. The story is fun but not too simple, the characters are funny but not two dimensional, and the animation and action are top notch. It’s the perfect thing to binge over a weekend, and let the nostalgia take you away.
4. I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead - Some people hate Steve Aoiki as a DJ, but no one can deny he puts on a hell of a show and works his ass off. This Doc is much the same in that there are some amazing shots that keep you involved until the story eventually wins you over. At it’s core I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead is about a kid that idolized his celebrity Dad Rocky Aoilki (founder of the Benihana restaurants) and spends his life trying to impress him, only to surpass his legacy after his death.
5. White Chicks - Some movies are sooooo bad, that they’re good. This is NOT one of those movies. Stay away. Get a new TV if you accidentally watch this, and throw the old one in the pool. Why did we mention it? Just to say how much we hate the fact that Hollywood makes movies like this, and why we wish someone would put us in charge of green lighting all scripts. Someone start that petition.
5 (again). Boy - This movie is so good because it just gets to the heart of what good story telling is. What’s great about Boy is that it’s really funny and heartfelt without making you want to gag. Boy features a young New Zealand Boy who’s thrilled when his Dad come’s home from prison, but he realizes that his Dad isn’t the person he idolized. This premise sounds like it could be a drama, a comedy, a horror, or piece of garbage, but Boy ends up being just an amazing movie. The Dad (Tiaka Whatiti) is also the writer director, and has made a bunch of other amazing movies (Eagle Vs. Shark, What We Do in the Shadows, and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarock)
6. Chef’s Table - How could a show about Chefs be so moving and amazing that it makes you question the meaning of existence and what you’re doing with your life? Chef’s Table shows you what it really means to be passionate about something and how that passion can change the world in little and big ways. Plus the cinematography is totally insanely amazingly beautiful. Watch one episode and you’ll be hooked. You’re welcome.
