I feel like I have been going to school forever now. I mean really, it has been quite a long ass time. There is this part of me that just cannot wait to until I am done, but then again there is the part of me that does not want it to end. So throughout my college career I have somehow managed to sort of “skate” by- if you will- and kind of just do the basics get decent grades and never really put too much extra effort for any particular class.
Well, even though it is only the start of the third week of this fall quarter, I have finally met my match. I am in a class, Comm 446 event planning, and it is going to be one of those classes that require a lot of extra “out-of-class time” to get things done. You see, the class is an event planning class and you may have attended an event, on campus, that this class has put on like Com Day in the spring quarter or the Alumni event in the winter. Anyways, the class divides themselves into committees, which individually become responsible for performing the tasks required of the particular committee. So, to give you an example, we have a budget committee in charge of finances and fundraising, a publicity committee in charge of publicizing the event, a hospitality committee in charge of the food, decorations and entertainment for the event and so on. To make a long story short…there is a lot of sh*t we have to do to ensure the event is a successful one. It feels like all the “skating-by” I have done in the past has finally caught up to me and this quarter is going to surely be a stressful one.
If you take this class during the winter quarter or spring quarter then the event you will put on is already decided for you. The winter quarter does an Alumni event and the spring quarter does the biggest event of the year, Com Day. The fall quarter however, has a little bit more freedom to pick the type of event they want to put on as long as it ties into academics in some way. So as a class we decided that we would put on an event, like a career fair, that focused on career opportunities available for communication majors. Students who are studying in the Communication field have mentioned, in recent pasts, that although Cal Poly provides its student with Career Fairs for possible job opportunities, that there are little to no opportunities for Com majors to utilize. So our class is officially throwing a Communication Career Convention that we are calling “COMCON”. The theme of the event is a spinoff of the annual superhero/comic expo “Comic-Con”. There will be plenty of career opportunities for communication majors to explore, guest speakers and a variety of entertaining things to engage in, and plenty of free food for us all to enjoy. Anyways, back to my main point: this class is going to be “H-E-double hockey sticks”, but I am looking forward to finally becoming more involved on in school and on campus. I am excited to see how things come together as the event gets closer and closer.
