“Come on! Give me one good reason why you can’t date me,” Jason, a guy from your classes, calls after as you walk out of class. He’s been pestering you about dating him for the past week. You were just about at your wits end of it.
“I don’t like you and I’ve already said no multiple times,” you told him feeling frustrated.
“If you would just give me a chance I guarantee that you’ll like me,” he stated cockily. An unamused scoff comes from your lips.
“I can’t give you a chance because I have a boyfriend,” the words spilled from your mouth before you could think about them. Jason laughed.
“Am I really supposed to believe that you have a boyfriend? I’ve been going after you for a week and you’re only bringing him up now,” he sassed you.
“I shouldn’t have to bring up having a boyfriend for you to accept me rejecting you,” you refuted.
“Well then who is? I never see you around with anyone,” Jason points. Crap. You really didn’t think this through at all,but you can’t admit that having a boyfriend was a lie. Surely Jason would never leave you alone then. Worst part you don’t even have any guy friends that could help you out. Out of the corner of your eye you spotted a dude walking by with a guitar case. Then it hits you, Gunil, a dude you only spoke to once before, but he was going to have to do.
“Gunil. You know the music major. He plays the drums. He’s my boyfriend,” you state matter of factly. Please buy it. You mentally prayed.
“How come I’ve never seen the two of you together then?” Jason quips. You despise him,
“Our schedules are very different. He’s on the opposite end of campus in music theory right now,” you have no idea if that’s even true, but you said it confidently.
“Certainly you see him at some point during the day,” he pressed.
“We leave together and we have the same lunch time on Tuesdays,” you disclosed.
“Great, so I can see the two of you together at lunch today,” Jason gives you a sly smile. Was today really Tuesday? You checked your phone, it was indeed Tuesday today. How stupid could you possibly be?
“Yeah, see you at lunch then. With Gunil, my boyfriend,” you couldn’t give up your act. You had one class period to figure out how you were gonna get Gunil to be your fake boyfriend.
Arriving at your class you slumped down in your seat. You don’t even know if Gunil has lunch after this class.
“Dude Gunil was trying to learn tricks with his drumsticks and ended up hitting himself in the eye. Look I got it on video,”. Your ears perked at the mention of Gunil’s name. You turned around in your seat to face the two laughing boys behind you.
“I’m sorry did you say Gunil?” You asked hopefully.
“Uh yeah why?” One of them questions you.
“I have something to speak with him about…it’s kinda urgent,” you tell him.
“Well he lunch after this class, so I guess you’re in luck,” the other one says. Maybe the odds are in your favor.
“And what class does he have right now?” you followed up.
“Music history,” he answers. Of course it’s on the other side of campus.
“Thank you,” you smiled kindly at them. You turned back around in your seat.
The second class was over, you were rushing out the door to find Gunil. You quickly ran in the direction of Gunil’s previous class hoping to catch him. Your lungs were starting to burn. Was your campus always this large? You were starting to think you were screwed until you saw him. There Gunil was walking with who you assumed to be his friend.
“Gunil!” You called him. Gunil looked around a bit before he saw you. You waved him over with your hand while panting. He parted ways with his friend, making his way over to you.
“Y/n? What are you doing here? Did you run?” Gunil questions you with a confused face, observing your current state.
“I-” you took a breath. “I need you to be my boyfriend,” you told him, still trying to catch your breath.
“What?” he asks you puzzled.
“I know this is weird, I'm sorry. There is this dude that won’t leave me alone, so I told him that I have a boyfriend to leave alone. The only problem is I don’t have a boyfriend, but he can’t know that, so I ended up telling him that you’re boyfriend,” you explained.
“So you need me to be your fake boyfriend,” Gunil clarified.
“Yes, please,” you pleaded. Gunil is quiet for a few seconds before he answers.
“Then let’s go get this dude to stop bothering my girl,” he wraps an arm around your shoulder.
You and Gunil arrive at your school cafeteria, his arm is still wrapped around your shoulders. It feels oddly normal as if it’s been there before.
“So you two really are a couple?” Jason’s annoying voice rings out behind you two. Both of you turn around to face him.
“So you’re the one who's been bothering my y/n?” Gunil says, his arm around your shoulder brings you closer to him.
“Aye she could’ve said that you were her boyfriend sooner,” Jasson defends.
“You should have accepted her rejection the first time. It shouldn’t matter if they have a boyfriend or not. No means no,” Gunil defends. He actually sounds angry. Jason senses this too and puts his arms up in defeat.
“Aye, I’m sorry alright? I leave her alone,” Jason said. Finally, you thought. Jason walks away, leaving you be.
“Thank you so much! I owe you one,” you thanked Gunil. You went to detach yourself from Gunil’s arm, but he held you in place.
“He’ll probably keep an eye on us. We should keep the act up for a while,” Gunil says.
“You’re probably right. It won’t be hard though. I told him that our schedules are different, so we only have lunch together on Tuesdays and leave together,” you informed him.
“Anything else I should know about our relationship?” He joked
“Uh I told him you had music theory class before your previous one to prove that our schedules were different,” you let him know.
“I did have music theory before music history,” Gunil tells you, taken aback. You’re taken back by this information too.
“Am I a psychic?” You laughed. Gunil and you had lunch together, sorting out some details of your fake relationship, just in case.
“What’s your last class I’ll pick you up,” Gunil asks, before the end of lunch.
“Oh you don’t have to, we could just meet at the front of campus,” you dismissed him.
“Nonsense, it’s my boyfriend duty to pick you up from class,” he declared, making you chuckle. He was really taking this seriously.
“Philosophy room 206,” you let him know.
“I’ll see you there,” Gunil bids you goodbye. You make your way to your next class, looking forward to seeing Gunil again.
“Gunil, do you want to grab dinner with us?” His friend Seungmin asks.
“Can’t I have to pick up my girlfriend,” Gunil states proudly.
“Girlfriend!? Since when? Wait no who?” Jooyeon investigates.
“Y/n,” Gunil told him.
“Wait, she's that girl from class that asked us about Gunil today right?” Jooyeon turns to Jiseok.
“Does that mean the something urgent was asking him out?” Jiseok said in disbelief.
“Well she didn’t technically ask me to be her boyfriend. She said I needed to be her boyfriend,” Gunil elucidates.
“What does that even mean?” Jungsu asks bewildered.
“Ok, so technically I’m not her real boyfriend,” Gunil proceeds to explain to them about the situation you were in.
“You’re her fake boyfriend,” Seungmin says after hearing the whole ordeal.
“Yes, and as her boyfriend I need to go pick her up from class now,” Gunil told them, grabbing his bag and heading out.
“Did he really just say that he was her fake boyfriend then call himself her boyfriend? Jiseok shook his head.
“Dude is in over his head,” Jungsu sighed.
“You guys know that y/n is “cute helper girl” from the music festival right?” Hyeongjun piped up.
“What!” They all yelled in surprise.

The first time you and Gunil met was when you were helping set up for the music festival that the music majors were having. You needed some volunteer hours for one of your classes and working the music festival counted towards that.
“Why isn’t this turning on?” You mumbled towards yourself. A piece of sound equipment was turning on, despite making sure that you plugged everything in correctly.
“It’s not plugged into the outlet,” a guy tells you. Your cheeks flushed.
“That’s embarrassing,” you covered your face with your hand.
“I’ve done the same before. I’m sure plenty of other people have too,” he tried to make you feel better. You plugged the main cord into the outlet and sure enough the equipment turned on.
“Thank you,” you told him.
“No worries. I don’t think I’ve seen you around before,” he said.
“My classes are on the other side of campus from the music ones, but I’m helping out here because I need volunteer hours,” you explained. Gunil nodded.
“I take it you play the drums,” you inferred, pointing at the drumsticks he was holding.
“Yep,” he spun one of the sticks between his fingers, but he fumbled and dropped it. “That’s embarrassing,” he awkwardly bent down to pick up the dropped stick.
“I’m sure I’d do the same. I can’t even spin a pen,” you laughed. Gunil was about to say something, but got cut off.
“Y/n come help me with these boxes!” Another volunteer called for you.
“I got to go, but I’ll watch you play later. It was nice meeting you…uh” you realized you don’t know his name.
“Gunil,” he told you.
“Nice meeting you Gunil,” you wished him goodbye.
“Nice meeting you too y/n,” he said as you walked away with lovestruck eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gunil picked you up outside of your class like he said he would. A smile appeared on your face without you even knowing upon seeing him.
“You ready?” He asked you, sticking out his hand. A silent offering for you to hold it. You slipped your fingers between his without much thought.
“Yep, let’s go,” you tell him. The both of you made your way off campus. The two of you walked by Jason who just so happened to be standing by the exit. Gunil gives him a stern look and Jason rolls his eyes walking away.
“He really doesn’t think that we’re dating,” you sighed.
“I’m sure he’ll give up soon,” Gunil squeezes your hand reassuringly.
Gunil ends up walking you back to your apartment that wasn’t too far away from campus. It wasn’t until you got there that you realized you were still holding hands. You let go of his hand and you felt a bit sad about it.
“Thanks for walking me back. You didn’t have too,” you said.
“I wanted to, so I’ll pick you up at the same time tomorrow?” He checks.
“It’s a date,” you playfully say.
Gunil and you kept this routine going for weeks. You would have lunch on Tuesdays and then Gunil would meet you outside of your last class and the two of you would leave together. Except you started to hang out more than that too. You two would have dinner together, work on assignments together. Sometimes you would watch him practice playing the drums. He even taught you how to spin a drumstick.
Fake dating Gunil started to feel a lot like actually dating Gunil. Originally you agreed to fake date until Jason disappeared. Now Jason disappeared for…well you’re not entirely sure when, but you haven’t seen him in at least a week. You and Gunil are still fake dating though, frankly you don’t want to stop. You like being with Gunil. Acting like you were a couple felt all too natural, like you had been dating for years. You have developed real feelings for Gunil whilst you were fake dating him.
“Gunil, you know Jason has been gone for a while now right?” You brought up one evening as Gunil was walking you back to your apartment after having dinner together. Gunil’s heart dropped. Were you about to end your fake relationship? Honestly for Gunil nothing about your relationship was fake. As cliche as it is he liked from the moment he met you. Gunil thought that he was daydreaming the day the words “I need you to be my boyfriend” left your mouth.
Ever since the music festival Gunil was hoping to see you around campus, but he never did. He remembered you saying that your classes were on the other side of campus and that was proving to be true. Just as he was starting to give up on running into you again, you literally came running to him.
“Has he?” Gunil acts like he didn’t notice.
“Yeah, but I like being with you, so I didn’t bring it up before,” you revealed. Gunil felt his heart fill with hope. Was the relationship not so fake to you either?
“You like being with me?” He asks.
“I do, and I want to keep being with you. Not as a fake couple,” you nervously confessed. Gunil’s heart bursts with joy.
“Oh you have no idea how grateful I am to hear those words,” Gunil said.
“Really so you like me too?” You question.
“I fell for you when we first met at the music festival,” Gunil reveals. “When you told me that you needed me to be your boyfriend it felt so unreal. It was something I dreamed about. It might have been selfish, but I didn’t care if it wasn’t real, I just wanted to be with you,” Gunil goes on. “This has never been fake to me,” he admits.
“This never felt fake to me either,” you disclose. “Then will you be my boyfriend? For real this time,” you chuckled.
“Of course I will,” Gunil hugged you. You hugged him back. You and Gunil pull away from the hug, your hands linked once again. This time as a couple. Gunil drops you off at your apartment.
“She’s my girlfriend for real this time!” Gunil shouts happily as he enters the shared apartment.
“Congrats” Hyeongjun, his roommate, congratulated him. Now he can finally stop hearing about Gunil’s feelings for you.
