Honestly, how beautiful a contrast is this? John’s face, the hint of a smile, expectant, hopeful, amused. He is already fascinated by the man he met two minutes ago. The man who is going to deduce his life and then tell John his name. Which is enough for John “Trust Issues” Watson to leave his depressing little room and cross the city to meet the man whose name he only learnt the day before. 

And then there is the face of the woman who has been living under a dead child’s name, who never told John her name, who feared her real self would not just not be enough but would drive John away. And there is John who does not want to know her name, who does not want to know about her real self but offers her his name. 

This might be viewed as a romantic gesture but I think the show makes it very clear that the real proof of love is offering your own name to the person you love. As in “The name’s Sherlock Holmes” via “Hamish. John Hamish Watson” to “Willam Sherlock Scott Holmes”.
