#assassin's creed rogue #ac rogue #shay patrick cormac #george monro (acrg)#HMS Cornro #and now back to our regular programming #one thing I really like about this canoe is the mood #Shay's life hasn't exactly been the most idyllic #and he most definitely had never known peace since the Lisbon earthquake #but around the Colonel he's just always so...calm??#it's nice to see him kind of settle down and not be bristling all the time #and the way he feels that he has a chance at atoning for what he did while working with the Colonel on improving New York is just oof 💯#and while the game never really got into the Colonel's side of the story #I have a long HC train about how he was also struggling with a lot of problems when he found Shay bcs well #assuming Finnegan Jr. (his student/assistant/comrade/heir to his legacy...) was killed by Assassins #he's probably got a lot of grieving going on at the time too #(and that's before we talk about guilt and stuff...)#(bcs guess who had to face the boy's parents to report that their son died while under his command)#and he's probably more in the mood to really wipe every Assassin off the continent at the time #including the ex-Ass he found if he proves to be uncooperative #bcs it sounded like that was the only way to do right by Finn Jr.#but as time goes by and he sees just how hardcore Shay is about doing good for the world like he needs it to breathe #the Colonel starts wondering if maybe letting the ex-Ass live instead is the way to do right by his dead protege #with the two looking more and more like each other every day #he'd probably start having Issues™ about executing Shay because well #if he'd kill a good man just because he was on the wrong side of the fence #that would make him no better than Finnegan Jr.'s killers #So in coming to terms with saving Shay instead of condemning him like some of his colleagues would've def wanted him to #I like to think the Colonel managed to also find some peace in dealing with the aftermath of what happened to Finn Jr.#as cheesy as it might be I like the idea that they found a bit of salvation in each other

#ok a bit of context #this Colonel belongs in the same modern AU that no.3's Haytham and no.4's Shay are from #but I had him survive his run-in with Liam bcs this time Shay actually gets to arrive on the scene in time #he's a little worse for wear (and def won't be returning to the front lines soon if ever) but at least he livES #But ok onto the technical memos #Aside from the fact that I tried to tackle several different things all at once in this pic #(lighting...shading...background... It's all the previous pics' work combined into one)#since it's the last one #At least 2 hours of the production time is really just spent barreling through research #about what kind of clothes would be the equivalent of the Colonel's usual stuff #bcs I /need/ to get that shit right #but it's a rabbit hole bcs so many things have changed in 300 years like #the 35th foot no longer exists?? ok #hmm letting him keep the garter star would be kinda weird bcs that's pretty much limited to high royalty nowadays #can we keep the cords? how are they worn? what do they look like??#I have never felt like I've known less about a subject than when I was sitting there trying to work this thing out #and after all that #I'm /still/ not sure I got it right 😂😭😭#but ok I triED #So anyway modern officers have a lot of uniform variation nowadays based on what they happen to need to wear at the time #but I needed something black #so I pinched what I saw the successors of the 35th regt was wearing during a parade bcs it was the right colour...#(it was the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment btw)#the collar badges I think I got reasonably right...rank insignia is also hard to get wrong #but I'm not too sure about what happens with the epaulettes bcs while there are the ones that looks like a simple strap #sometimes there are ones that look like braids...#So many variations and I'm pretty sure they all mean something #but yes #this is probably gonna need more research but oof my brain #RIP the rest of me too bcs damn this one took a lot of stamina to finish 😂

#assassin's creed iii #john pitcairn #trying out soft-edged shading this time #/but carefully/#while this one's pretty close to my default (read: brain-not-engaged) style of shading #I tend to do it really haphazardly when I'm not focusing so it can get...messy #but not thiS tiME #aside from making sure shadows and highlights only go wherever they need to be #this time the lineart is more pencil-y than the previous straight-up comic pen inked lineart #tbh I like using the pencil more bcs you can create more variation in the lines with it #and it has some of that traditional art touch #but it's also harder to make clean edges with it....hm #but ok intentionally or not #I guess ”Pitcairn's neck” is just gonna be on my kinks register now #🤔

#5: Modern AU!Lawrence

#I...have no excuses for this #after no.4's Shay I had a hankering for hands #which then became...forearms...#and it's been a while since I tried to draw arms which are more than just /there/ so I took this opportunity to #really study how the musculature/joints/etc. of arms work and shit #and damn I think this might be the best thing I've coughed up this week 😂😂😂#*self-indulgent noises*#bless present day clothes they're so easy to draw #but ok while this is also a modern au thing #I was talking with a friend the other day about a Templar High School AU #where we had Lawrence head the school's archaeology club #which was what I based this picture on #but honestly it's so multipurpose it'll probably work for any regular modern AU #(also yes that's the precursor box pulling a cameo 📦)#assassin's creed rogue #ac rogue #lawrence washington (acrg)

Time: 9 hrs Program: Clip Studio Paint Tools: Maru pen, lasso tool, soft airbrush, hard airbrush

#more of that serious modern au content #the new challenge this time is #✨lighting✨#on one hand I managed to get the light to fall exactly where I wanted it to #on the other hand #...the rest of the picture's brightness #I screwed that up so bad #this pic went through /so/ much post-processing just to make sure the other details are somewhat visible #bcs at first I had to crank up my screen brightness to 100% just to be able to see anything #Since this is supposed to belong in the same group as 3's Haytham I used mostly the same shading techniques #but tbqh the highlight this time is the chance to design something for Shay 😂#the whole setup being mostly the same colour kind of made things difficult for a bit but hey #this is what textures and materials are for :^DDD #this definitely makes me want to make the proper design sheet #where the details are actually...visible... #3: Modern AU!Haytham

Time: 4.5 hrs Program: Clip Studio Paint Tools: Maru pen, lasso tool, hard airbrush, soft airbrush, gradient tool

#ok confession time #honestly just leaving this round's goal at simply ”Haytham” would've been sufficient bcs this guy #is so hard to get right #(gremlin vc) i'll get you someday 'aytham #but yeaaah ok other than that #I had plans for a serious modern day Templar-Assassin war AU that's been gathering dust for like 1.5 years now #but for some reason I never got around to really doing it #funny how that keeps happening #...I may need to reevaluate my fanwork habits #anyway on the technical side #this time I wanted a clean crisp look #so I used the lasso tool for shading #which I promise is not as weird as it sounds #I swap between inking the shadows in with a pen and filling in a lasso tool selection with no real regularity #but one thing about lasso-type shading is that I feel it's easier to make clean-edged shadows with them #bcs I don't get tempted to try ”draw in” the shadows #with a lot of disjointed pen lines #and lasso shadows where the ends/edges are strategically erased with a soft airbrush to create that gradient transition? 👌👌👌💯#(the sort you can see on Haytham's shirt around his tie here)#Also done here: An attempt at strictly clean lines #bcs lately I feel like I have the habit of sketching stuff out and that makes the lines messy af #I also made it a point to pay attention to the forms and structure here so I don't end up with floppy cloth especially #I feel like some parts could use more work...but at least that coat looks like I put some real effort in it 😂#assassin's creed iii #haytham kenway

#look sometimes a birb just feels like thirsting over certain people's necks ok #:^)#I was looking through my refs and an artist I liked did a portrait in a style like this so I wanted to try that out...#but ok also I sometimes wonder what Pitcairn's hair looks like under that hat #given the results of the value-related debacle that was round 1 #this time around I tried to keep it down to just the 3 basic values #but I'm still going for that painty look so yes ahem I used blending strategically #I never usually do lighting at this angle either so it's def a learning experience about which parts actually get lit up by the highlight #(spoiler: it's the nose #I always forget about the nose asdlkfjalsdfa)#also lowkey modern au bcs as much as I love all the frilly jazz of everyone's default clothes this is also good #assassin's creed iii #john pitcairn (ac3)

#as is readily apparent #I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with my brush here 😂#but I'll be damned if I don't at least make it /presentable/ 😤#so anyway as everyone is probably aware of here #I don't usually paint my pictures bcs I'm a whore for lineart #but this had been a good exercise in forcing myself to really focus on the values of the pic #bcs they're really all you have to make shapes out of when you don't have lines to fall back on #that said #I need to work on /not/ blending so much bcs that just makes everything muddy #(even if blending is...really addicting... 😩)#Since this is the first pic I started out with I went with the Colonel bcs I'm /always/ in the mood for that #I've been thinking of using the manuscript as a prop for some time but never got around to drawing it for some reason so #here it is #hands are an enigmatic mystery but it's also damn hard to find a reference pic of a hand doing exactly what you want it to do #so I had to rely on my own hand this time 😂#assassin's creed rogue #ac rogue #george monro (acrg)

Art Boot Camp Record (18-25 June 2020)

I was feeling rather stuck in all kinds of ways with art recently, so I thought I’d try throwing myself into a personal drawing boot camp to try learn something new... 🤔 Said boot camp wound up lasting a whole week with a grand total of 7 pictures coming out of it, which I’ll be putting up here 😂

Anyway, since it’s meant to be a training session of sorts, I set some rules for every round to make sure I’m not just randomly doodling:

💡 Try something new (use a new shading method, drawing technique, etc.) 💡 Draw something you really want to draw (trying to reconnect with my inspiration here, I feel like I don’t know where it went lately :((( ) 💡 📢UsE ReFEReNCes dAmMit📢 (this needs training, it works but my ego and/or laziness keeps getting in the way gdi) 💡 Limit excessive usage of the zoom tool (this is a personal pitfall of mine—I love details so I tend to work on every part zoomed in individually, but drawing without looking at the whole canvas as a whole is a surefire way to screw up its overall balance so that needs to stop 😩) 🎁 Record some stats! (it’ll be interesting to know, maybe useful too 👀)

That said, there’ll be a pic spam of various levels of quality coming in, so heads up!
