The street you lived on as a child seems more real than the one you live on now. – Michael Lipsey
ON SUNNY DAYS I GO OUT WALKING. I END UP ON A TREE-LINED STREET. I LOOK UP AT THE GAPS OF SUNLIGHT. I MISS YOU MORE THAN ANYTHING

I.
this never happened but i used to daydream about it a lot. 4.19.13
when i was a sophomore, there was a senior in my photography class who seemed to be made entirely of cigarette smoke; his hair was always in his eyes but it was short on the sides and in the back. i would ask him the time just so he would speak to me and his breath smelled like chapstick and menthols. i touched his hand in the dark room once accidentally and i apologized. he pushed me up against the wall and put his mouth on my mouth hard and fast and i could tell he had chain-smoked four cigarettes on the way to school. i grabbed the collar of his soft flannel and pulled him into me. his hands went up my shirt and i had his lip in my teeth when the bell rang. as i was fixing myself up he leaned into me and told me i should probably get a watch.

I’m crying on the train because I keep looking at people and they’re not looking back and I’m worried because I’m pretty sure that’s the only way you can know you’re really there
