Promotion Blues | Sam & Emilia
In the midst of getting ready for yet another press tour for her and Sam’s new movie, Emilia had decided to refuel her petite body with a few cups of coffee. After all, it was the main thing keeping her going strong through long days of filming, following by even longer days filled with interviews and constant streams of questions coming at her from every direction. The caffeine was the one thing that kept her alert enough to not make a fool out of herself through it all. While she was on her journey to fill her cup with the much needed substance, she paused for a moment to ask her co-star if he could use one as well. After all, they were in this together and she of all people knew how draining the entire process could be. Plus on top of that, she was aware that he had recently been going through a divorce and something about his demeanor seemed a bit off lately. The brunette flashed her co-star a sweet smile as he agreed, before she scurried across the room to the coffee pot.
Through the months that the two had spent getting to know each other through filming and becoming friends, the actress knew the man well enough to know the preparations to take with his coffee to make it perfect for his liking. It was one of the perks of closely working with someone for long work days. You had the chance to get to know the ins and outs of a person more so than usual. “Here you go, my love,” the cheerful brunette said as she handed him his cup of coffee before taking the chair next to him. The warm beverage enveloped her mouth, feeling an instant burst of energy course through her body. Of course, her lipstick had dulled in the process, meaning that the ready to go makeup team was already prepared to fix it and brush yet another thin layer of powder over her face to freshen up her look. It wasn’t that Emilia minded getting all glammed up. On most occasions she actually enjoyed it. But for the most part, she just wanted to enjoy a simple cup of coffee without being poked and prodded with makeup brushes and new layers of lipstick. “Don’t giggle at me, Samuel. It takes a lot of work to look this perfect.” The woman motioned from her face to the length of her body, keeping a serious composure before allowing her face to crack into a small smile. “Are you ready for another round of grueling interviews?” the woman asked, taking another sip from her coffee despite her frustrated make up team’s efforts to keep reapplying her lipstick.
To say Sam had been distracted lately was an understatement. He felt like he was in a constant state of autopilot. Most of his focus was on holding it together. No one ever warned you on how it felt to go throw a divorce. It was something people didn’t speak about, for fear that saying anything about it at all would cause the said marriage to implode on the spot. It was so strange to feel mostly relief, but also grim sadness. Disappointment, excitement, fear. The smile that had spread across his tired face felt strangely foreign. He half wondered if it had looked at weird as it felt. Like Mr. Potato Head dressed with sad eyes, and a smile. Emilia had this way of distracting you from your real problems without even realizing it. It was one of the many things he had grown to love about her. “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be, Clarke,” he said with a halfhearted smile.
Soon the team were being rushed into cars lined up outside the hotel, off to whatever event he had to perform at. When you were this distracted it was hard not to call it a performance. The charming, funny Sam that would be at all the interviews today, was not how the Sam inside felt. It was good for him though. Better to spend the day laughing with a friend at stupid questions asked over and over again, than spend it sulking over a tub of Ben and Jerry’s. The car rolled up to a building that he let his management lead him into distractedly. Most of the day went by in lunges, and drags. He smiled, he laughed when appropriate. He pretended the think about the answers to the questions he had already been asked. They had been split up closer to lunch time, for singular interviews, which made Sam more uncomfortable. Without Emilia lighting up the room with her warmth, it would be nearly impossible. But of course, he was asked the age old question that he had avoided by wearing a ring on his finger for most of the press he had done in the past. Was he romantically involved with Emilia? They had both been trained to answer with giggles, and to dance around the question. Nothing sold a movie like the possibility of actual real life love. Sam continued on respectably, but all but groaned as he was released for lunch. The man shot Emilia a text, ‘Lunch at the pub across the street? It only seems fitting, girlfriend. Can you believe they asked the girlfriend question?’

Maybe it was being newly divorced that turned him into this critical monster. Or maybe he had always been this way, but the ring on his finger had held him accountable of his critiques. Anything anyone did, he couldn’t stop himself from comparing it to now ex-wife, Laura. “I’m going to get a coffee, want one?” Emilia inquired, pulling him from his reverie. “Sure, thanks,” he smiled up at the now familiar face. Sam watched the brunette float over to the coffee set-up on the far side of the hotel lobby. Hotel lobbies all around had become the biggest part of their pregame routine. Laura had never once offered to get him anything, yet strongly felt as though he should only ever think of one person. That one person being her.
Emilia bounced her way back to him with a pep in her step that he found impossible. When her eyes met his, he turned his gaze down at his phone. He had been very careful when the camera’s stopped rolling. Acting was the best job, but it was a hard job. Seeing as you usually have amazing chemistry with your leading lady, it was really easy to get caught up in the romance of it all. It was way too early into his newly single life to be catching feelings. The smell of coffee perked his senses, and seconds later the girl offered the cup to him. “Thank you so much.” Make up artists and hairdressers had been swarming them all morning, and Sam was surprised that they had found something else to perfect on the already stunning brunette. One of them was running their fingers through her loose curls, the other rubbing lipstick on her lips, replacing the layer that was now on her cup of coffee. Why did they have to look so perfect to promote a movie? Sam cut his eyes at the girl, chuckling quietly at her frustration, before one of them started fluffing his already fluffy hair.
