So, just a summary.

They shut down for twelve hours or so, without the government enforcing the ban, so that they could make Trump the hero who saved it. Trump, who isn't in office yet. Trump, who was the one who started pushing the ban.

It's theater to flatter his ego, and there's no side to this argument that I feel is trustworthy. You've got the incoming narcissist in chief, you have the federal government wanting to establish this ban but can't explain why it's bad when Tiktok does things but capitalism when Meta or Twitter does them, and you've got a corporation that's willing to play ball with both of them.

Yeah. This is feeling like that cyberpunk dystopia. Feeling the need for decentralized social media even more now.

The centralized networks will be bloated imitations of themselves by year’s end, stuffed full of Republican/Trump propaganda masquerading as “fact”. That’s why fact checking is going away. Not to save money or because of bias, but to allow them to lie without consequence.

Decentralized networks like Mastodon may be the way forward but I expect them to get harder to use. They will try to block traffic to sites on which they don’t have total control. And a lot of Mastodon’s instances are hosted in other countries so outside of a ban there’s nothing Trump can do to stop them.

Everyone needs a VPN. Things are about to get worse.
