Currently obsessed with Star Trek TOS and I know most of my mutuals probably haven’t seen any of it but I need to emphasize exactly how wooby Captain Kirk is. The poor guy is tortured every other episode and his brain is scraped out with a spoon every third episode. I understand now. This is the hit Kirk with a mallet show. And through it all, he’s still a character with a lot of dignity, he’s always a captain first. But just- my poor guy. I’m going to have to make a Character Of All Time post about him. He’s just so haunted.

wait wait i almost forgot to post about my favorite kirk + bones moment of the whole film which is when jim is literally phyrically vibrating with the effort to restrain himself from absolutely VAULTING into the captain's chair and turfing saavik out for crimes of 'not being me' and 'me (jim) not having control of the enterprise' and bones is like lol. lmao even. remember when me and spock said you cannot exist as anything other than a starship captain? except he doesn't say that so instead he offers him a tranquilizer like jim is a dad and saavik is his 15 year old daughter driving a car for the first time and jim is in the passenger seat grabbing the oh shit handle and saying 'THERES A RED LIGHT'

I feel it’s worth mentioning that in the context of the episode itself, Nomad doesn’t perceive Kirk or itself in gendered terms at all (it only understands organic beings as “units”). Nomad calls him “Creator” because it’s confused him with its literal creator, a man named Jackson Roykirk. Kirk alone is the one who jumps from “male creator” to “yikes/lol I’m a mom now” (depending on the occasion) and Spock just shrugs and runs with it.

(This also pretty directly mirrors “Charlie X,” where unlike in “The Changeling,” Kirk flatly refuses to take on the paternal role that Charlie and McCoy project onto him until he has no real alternative, and is intensely uncomfortable being boxed into Strong Masculine Role Model. He’s ultimately unable to hold onto that authority with Charlie and they’re saved by the deus ex machina of the Thasians at the end, while in “The Changeling,” Kirk leverages his maternal-according-to-him authority to get Nomad to self-destruct and succeeds without outside help.)
