Not Now
Not now, heart. Not now.
Not now when my eyes are seeing a lot less than they should and the maps say nothing beyond those woods.
Not now when my ears are muffled by voices unknown and I’m believing the lies that these noises lead home.
Not now when my knees still tremble at the sight of the dark and my feet are uncertain of where the path starts.
Not now when my faith wavers at the onset of the storm and I forget that what follows the night is the morn.
Not now.
No, I’m not saying you should stop beating. I’m saying you start beating for something else.
Dear heart,
beat for the vision that there’s more to the now, for the thought that in the forest, there’s adventure, somehow;
beat for the truth that there’s growth when you listen, for the grace to ignore all the hissing;
beat for the strength to stand firm, to move forward, for the lamp at your feet that leaves you empowered;
beat for what comes after the rain is the sun, for the hope that the battle has already been won.
Beat for all that and more.
But for her, maybe not now.
