I find age-swap stories to be quite compelling. Thereâs just something fun about flipping roles and seeing how it changes the characters and their dynamics. I've found that Mob Psycho 100 is a good fandom for well-done fics that use this trope. I love seeing Mob be a mentor to Reigen and how, somehow, the two still have so much to teach one another. the climax of generator rex always strikes me a little as a tragedy
rex's life as he knows it has been marked by loneliness and he chooses at the last moment to make himself alone again
the decision to be the only evo is one that I ruminate about. a lot. what motivated that? is he still a little bit a weapon even in his own eyes? does he not know how to be human and so he doesn't give himself the chance to try?

I never liked the ending (but it was rushed so I get it, needed a neat bow on everything), but to the questions about him being a weapon in his own eyes...yeah. Flat-out. Although, I think "tool" is better for how he sees himself. We see in the very first episode, when VK says Providence just uses him as a weapon, he doesn't deny it. When Weaver calls him "thing" and people call him "it", he doesn't flinch. The first episode with Hunter - he kept trying to talk things through. Upset that people were bigoted, yeah, but if you listen to him talk to Hunter at the diner he was more concerned about people thinking he was a threat. In Gravity, he outright tells Holiday with a cure, they won't need him - basing his worth as a person entirely on how good of a cure he is.
But the biggest bit of his tool mentality is back in episode 1, when Noah says the asshole kids only want to use him for his powers, and Rex asks "What's wrong with that?" You could make an argument that him standing up for himself was him realizing after Noah said that, but to me it always read as him trying to impress Noah too - since immediately after the rejection, he asks if Noah wants to use him too, by offering to do the same thing that made the other kids like him.
Providence was not the first people to use Rex, either. He was a tool for Quarry too (and I've got a whole HEAP of thoughts about Quarry manipulating Rex), a child placed by his side - for why? His personality, or the fact that he can hack into any machine and turn nearly any big bad threatening EVO that might be hard to kill into a soft, squishy human? Rex's life for so long was being so manipulated, so used - of COURSE he was never going to give up what makes him useful. He doesn't know how to be anything else.
