Final Statement

“A Vacant Bazaar” by Christian Capurro demonstrates the concept of erasure in the form of completely erasing content from magazine pages with the exception of page numbers and the covers. Capurro utilized contemporary fashion and lifestyle magazines that were popular during the late 20th century and early 21st century such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Marie Claire. Capurro cultivated a process in which 260 people erased images from every page of every available magazine and he calculated that approximately 267 hours was spent in doing this. The concept behind Capurro’s work is that material substance, in this case a substantial pile of rubber dust, can be created by carrying out a fairly immaterial process such as erasing. Similar to Capurro’s work, our project revolves around the concept of erasure, however we chose to extend his idea of forming material substance from an immaterial process. We applied erasure to change the meaning of texts by erasing words or phrases. Capurro simply employed erasure in the form of erasing with a rubber. We chose to experiment with various techniques of erasure such as marking out, taping over, applying paint, cutting out, applying water and stabbing holes to remove words from our choice of text, 1984 by George Orwell. By erasing various words and phrases from the text, we were able to alter sentences and thus transform the meaning of the text. Not only did we apply erasure to form an alternate meaning of the choice of text, we took Capurro’s concept of transforming an exsisting medium (the magazine) into a completely different substance (rubber dust), to deform the medium through which George Orwell chose to convey a message. George Orwell’s choice of medium was text. By applying and extending Capurro’s idea, we transformed the original medium of text into an image to depict the altered meaning which was obtained from our previous experiments with erasure.

Final Statement ...

When i began this assessment I immediately began to brainstorm ideas and concepts for what boxes are used for and what themes i could integrate into these ideas. I began to search online for inspiration and decided to concentrate on themes of materiality, practicality and imagination. For my first experiment i began by challenging the material purpose of a box. Through doing so i was able to change its geometric shape and its material purpose transforming the cardboard into a paper mache type of material. From this i took a different approach considering the practicality of the box transforming it into a bookshelf, this later developed into a dollhouse following that theme of imagination. This idea gave rise to the creation of my nightlight, this was achieved through various cutting, sculpting and fitting techniques. From this i was able to use fire to burn holes within the walls of the box to also create a nightlight. This experiment was much more difficult as the fire was very tricky to control. From here i decided to try the same idea but with much smaller holes which although was enjoyable it did not have a very good light payoff. Following this process i was able to create my final work incorporating themes of practicality and imagination using the same technique to punch holes in the box and draw string through the centre in order to hang photos. This created a 3 dimensional photo album which worked well challenging the concept of what a box can be.

FINAL WORK After multiple experiments i have finally created something im happy with! I incorporated both the concept of material purpose and imagination in order to create a 3 dimensional photo frame. This was developed from my previous experiments working with night lights through the idea of poking holes in the box to give it a new purpose. Once that was done i drew some red thread through the center of the box in order to give the photos something to hang on. From here i was able to attach the photos and seal the frame transfoming it into something new.

Carrying on from the night light concept i decided to use a large needle to poke lots of small sized holes into tthe tops and sizes of the box. The back was again instaled with fairy lights and this was the result once turned on. The light payoff was not as strong as if hoped but with any luck this concept will develop into my final work!

After placing the box over a light this is the result. It gave off a good amount of light and was very eery to look at offering the room a very different presence.

Using my previous project as inspiration i decided to develop that idea further using fire to burn holes in the sides of the box to create a night light. It was slightly difficult controlling the fire and i was often required to burn the carboard from both side to ensure the holes would burn the whole way through. Each hole took some what of a different shape giving an overall abstract appearance.

Developing on the idea of meterial and light play i played on the concept of childhood objects and created a night light. I decided to seal the box and carve a series of star shapes into the lid of the box. Once the light was switched on the display was quiet beautiful to watch. It was intresting to view the different ways the rooms which the box was trasported into took on the projected image and degree of brightness from the stars. (more images and ideas to come)

Developing on the concept of meterial interaction i decided to encompass the concept of light into the box and watch how it can be trapped inside an enclosed space. Using some small tea lights i made a series of small incisions into the top of the box and place the loghts through the holes. I intend to expand on this idea further.
