Steve slowly opens his eyes, taking in the stark bright room around him. His ears fill with the beeping of machinery, and he flinches when a painful tug pulls at his arm where an IV is attached.
“Shit.”
“Steve?” Robin moves from her seat, coming to his side.
“What happened? Where…?”
“You collapsed. You’re at the hospital. Your wounds were infected. Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Two
“Don’t do this,” Eddie wraps his arms around Steve, pulling him into a warm hug.
“What?”
“It’s not time. Please, don’t do this.” Eddie presses his fingertips harder into Steve’s back, trying to imprint himself on the man.
“But I miss you.”
“I know, but it’s not time. Go home.” Eddie’s voice fills every crevice of Steve’s mind.
“I don’t wanna go without you.”
“You have to. Go home, Steve.” Eddie motions behind Steve, who turns to look.

“I still miss you.”

“When will I get to stay?”
“Next time.” Squeezing Steve’s fingers, Eddie smiles at him adoringly.

“I know, dear. Go home.” Eddie motions behind Steve, who turns to look.

“Is it time?”

“I can stay? With you?”
Eddie nods. “I love you, Steve.”
“I love you, too. I always did. The whole time.”
“I know. I’ve missed you. You’ve been gone a long time.” Eddie leans his forehead against Steve’s.
“I missed you, too.”
“Let’s go home.” Eddie motions behind Steve, who turns to look.
There’s an opening through the expanse of bright white light.
When Steve turns back to Eddie, he’s smiling at him. Eddie takes a step forward and delicately presses his lips against Steve’s, kissing him for the first time.
“Let’s go home,” Steve whispers.
