“I'm here to see the Hanging City. It's always been my dream to see it with my own four eyes, ever since I was a Hatchling.”
I have a question about Outer Wilds. How do the Nomai statues actually work? Not the memory transfer part, but the targeting. I know it activates when the probe finds the Eye of the Universe, but how does it determine who actually gets their memories tracked?
I have three specific examples for my confusion. First, we know Hatchling got picked on Timber Hearth because they were closest to the statue, but how did the statue turn to face the Hatchling when it was on a stump instead of its original base. Second, I get that Gabbro got a statue because they were next to the broken statue when it happened, but why was the broken one able to activate? And why didn't any of the other statues in the island activate? Having it be based on making eye contact or being in proximity wouldn't be a great design, they'd have to either wait around the statues all day, or just hope they were in the right spot when the probe activated. Finally, why didn't the statue on Brittle Hollow activate for Riebeck? Again, needing to be in proximity doesn't feel logical, and Riebeck probably would have been the closest Hearthian to the statue at the time that it activated.
And all of this is assuming that the statue is immediately aware of any and all sentient life in the solar system. If they made it to specifically work for them, why did the statues work for us? If there's no filtering at all, why isn't there a random memory retaining sentient jellyfish or something? And if there is filtering, but not specifically to find Nomai, why did they think it would be even remotely necessary to account for any other sentient life when designing the statues?
My understanding is the statues pair with someone based on eye contact/close proximity. In the statue workshop there's a conversation about 'hey back up so the statue pairs with Daz and not [another Nomai, I don't remember who]'. That plus the statue on Timber Hearth rotating the first time because Hatchling was closest but off to one side- it rotated and then opened its eyes. So they wouldn't pair with someone who's kinda nearby- Riebeck is nowhere near close enough for the black hole forge statue to pair with.
Also, they weren't planning to hang out all day- the loop was only ever going to be twenty two minutes. Just get whoever needs to be near whichever statue there and have them vibe/doing their job for a bit, and when they find the Eye they'll pair and can turn everything off.
I don't think the Nomai planned for other sentient life, they just happened to pick criteria that fit Hearthians as well.

Last Song: Beneath the Brine by the Family Crest
Currently Watching: Arguably Kamen Rider Wizard but it's been a while since the friend I'm watching it with and I have done that. Probably will be starting again soon though.
Currently Reading: Just finished West With Giraffes (Lynda Rutledge). It was good! I'd like to pick up another fiction book next but. it's gonna be one I've read already since thats what I have (borrowed the one i just read from older sister)
Current Obsessions: I think? it's monster hunter wilds? and kinda still armored core 6 mostly because my hunter is also my raven. Also though i think i successfully forced outer wilds into the 'forever hovering around' zone (which is good)
Currently Working On: writing wise i'm bouncing back and forth between a runescape fic, something short with Esker, and a horror/comedy/we'll see if i get this right thing with Feldspar. Not writing wise I'm doing two Into The Jungle animal stacker things for incoming children in the family, but I'm changing them up Heavily to do usa west coast native animals/tree
Currently Wearing: maryland brew at the zoo shirt (Robezpierre got it for me)(the back has a ruffed lemur with hops replacing the ears)
Last Google DuckDuckGo Search: rs3 gregorivic because im gonna end up doing that boss fight soonish
