Tips on Grimoire Organization
Please note that if you are using a hard bound notebook or journal, adding in additional pages will bulk up your book, like so: (these are the exact same journals, btw)
- Envelopes. Let’s say you’re doing a section on Tarot in your Grimoire, and you want to include a few Tarot spreads, but you don’t want to waste two or three pages. Glue an envelope onto one of your pages to make a “pocket” where you can store little cards or papers with the tarot spreads written on them.
- Pockets. Similar to the envelope idea. If you have a page, or section for example, on herbal teas, you can make a pocket out of a piece of paper to keep your current favorite tea recipes in.
- Dividers, Cover Pages and Ribbons. If you’re like me and you like to have “sections” in your grimoire, you can easily make dividers by gluing a sheet of paper in your book (to make it heavier to make the sections stand out more). You can go further by turning your divider into a cover page for that section. And if you don’t like the idea doing that, you can always glue a ribbon, or a string, to the spine of your book to act as a bookmark.
- Double pages. I always had a problem with “wasting” pages in my grimoire. For example, my page on consecrating and charging. These two concepts are very similar to me, and I didn’t want two page stating the same thing. So, what I did was write out all my information on charging on a separate sheet of paper, then glued the top of that page into my grimoire. This way I could flip up the page on charging (as if it were on a clipboard) and have my page on consecrating underneath.
- Extended pages. Similar to the one above. In my Crystal section of my Grimoire, I decided to write out a chart that let me search for crystals by intention. So I drew my chart on a long sheet of paper, then folded it over (side to side) so that it fit comfortably in my book, then I just glued one side down into the book.
- Brochures. In my Elements section, I had a ton of information I wanted to write down, but I didn’t want each element to have more than two pages. So I used a piece of computer paper and folded it into a brochure (or into thirds) and glued it into the book so that the flaps would open and give me double the space to write.
- Clear Tape. There are many times where i finished a page in my grimoire only to find out there was a section that I left out. A simply way to fix this was with clear tape. I would write my forgotten bit of into on a separate piece of paper and then use clear tape to tape one side of the paper to my page. This allows me to flip the paper back and forth without covering up anything that I had written.

The Importance of Salt in Witchcraft
In witchcraft, as in biology, you cannot survive without the use of salt. Salt is the ultimate purifying agent, and it has extensive ritual and spell usages that every single magick-using culture has come to recognise and use. Everything from Terry Pratchett to Supernatural has used salt in their work related to magic lore, and this is because it’s extremely common in real-world customs, traditions and rituals.
Important Witchy Facts About Salt!
Salt is a cleanser. Salt is used when we cast circles and bless items; it is used when Sumo wrestlers purify the ring before a fight; it is used when a kitchen witch scrubs down their tabletop; it is used when a Christian priest wishes to cast out demons; it is used when a butcher wants to kill germs. Salt is the ultimate cleansing agent, killing not just microbes but malicious or negative magicks, holding them at bay and driving them out.
Salt is a barrier. Salt lines around doors, windows, beds and even houses have been used for thousands of years as methods of driving back dark forces and keeping bad spirits at bay. Negative magick and bad spirits cannot cross a line of salt, and often touching it is said to be enough to kill them (or at least burn them). Scattering salt grains before a fae will force the fae to stoop to count every single grain, because they’re a bit obsessive and can’t leave it alone.
Salt is cheap and safe. This is actually pretty important, because whilst some magickal items (like candles, pentagrams and athames) are kind of indisputably witchy, salt is not only cheap, safe and generally useful, it’s also something that you HAVE to have because humans NEED salt to survive. So, for those secret witches who might live at home with unaccepting parents, or in a country that does not permit witchcraft, it might be the only tool you can always have access to that won’t be questioned.
Salt is versatile. You can use salt in all kinds of different rituals and practices, everything from cleansing a circle to blessing a wand to calling down a curse. Salt is something that has many potent ritual properties, and it’s an essential part of almost all magic.
Mineral salts:
Look. I’m not gonna judge if you want to use fancy pink salt or whatever. That’s your call. All I’m saying is, it’s really expensive and it’s literally no different to the cheap table salt you get from the shops. Magickally speaking, salt is salt. Magick doesn’t care if it’s Himalayan mountain salt or if it’s Woolies Homebrand table salt. Don’t waste your money! Honestly, it’s not worth it unless there’s a very specific reason to do so.
So, keep a stash of salt in your house! It’s an awesome thing to have for magick, and boy is it good to eat too!

"Why didn't my spell work?"
This post is to answer the question proposed by the title. I, along with many other witches, have done spells that had no effect or even backfired. Sometimes (most of the time) it can be quite frustrating.
If a spell backfired or did nothing, ask yourself:
Did I really want to do this spell?
Was I actively trying to perform the spell?
Was the intent of the spell clear in my mind, or was I distracted?
Did I have enough energy at the time to perform the spell?
If the answer to all of those questions was yes, you may want to evaluate whether or not some other force could be interfering with your spell, be it another witch, a spirit, or something else.
One more thing! If you’re having a divination session and the answers start to become inconsistent and, well, wrong, it does not mean all the previous answers were wrong. I tend to think like that sometimes, when in reality I’ve just used up too much energy on the other answers.
This has been a semi-positive ramble about inconsistency and failure in witchcraft so there
So that ask got me thinking. I considered myself “agnostic” to those who did not know about my craft. And that feels more right? BUT. I do love the thought of a goddess. BUT, I don’t believe in several deities. I am such a crossroads because I want something to believe in - I’ve always said I believed in “the universe” which is true. If something is going awry, I just…let the universe do its thing and point me in the right direction.
I guess I just had religion and a scary god that will damn you to hell shoved down my throat for so long…I actually started having panic attacks in the last church I attended. My stepdad, bless his heart, walked me out and sat with me while I cried my eyes out and said, “Well…we just came for the stupid donuts anyways”. Its hard for me to think that my fate after this life is left up to one power.
Does anyone else believe similarly? Or am I just…one of those odd ones?

I have my intent now what?
Well you have just taken your first step to spell writing. Now that you have your intent, your goal, you can can start researching. What relates and corresponds to your intent and what ingredients do you have available? Some things you could research:
Gemstones
Herbs and flowers
Types of Water (spring, rain, ocean, etc)
Colors
Candles
Oils
Incense
Animal Symbolism
Time of Day
Planets and Cosmic Bodies
Fruits
Vegetables
Metals
Emotional, Psychic and Physical Energies
Classic Witches Tools (besom, wands, etc)
Divination Tools (pendulums, tarot cards, scrying mirrors, etc)
Mythology and Mythical Creatures
Once you have researched and found the ingredients and objects you wish to use, even if you decide to only use your own energy and voice that is fine. You don’t absolutely need to use anything specific. It is your spell and your intent, choose what you feel will work best for you.
How are you going to use these things you have researched and obtained? This will require more research on your part, witchcraft requires a lot of research. Some ideas:
Bath mix/salts
Tea and infusions (if ingredients are safe to ingest)
Gem Elixir (research to ensure your gemstone(s) is safe to use in water or safe methods to make it without submerging the gemstone)
Jar or Bottle Spell
Sigil Spell
Burning
Shredding/Cutting
Burying
Spoken
Painted/drawn
Crafted or Molded
The possibilities are truly endless. All I can say you have just taken your first steps for writing a spell! Once you have decided your intent and the process you wish to use, it is time to begin trials. Everything takes practice. It may not work at first but that is alright. Take notes and observe results. Just be safe with what you are doing. Happy Spell Writing!
What do these Terms Mean?
These are how I personally view these terms and use them on my blog, though you’ll find a lot of other witches use them the same ways I do.
Spell:
Spells differ from other methods of magic because they can be so versatile and can have so many different effects. Essentially using your power to influence, change, or accomplish a goal would be considered a spell. Spells can have many components or none at all and can be traditional or new. Some spells suggest you cast circles before performing them and others do not. Some call for specific placements of altars or herbs and some are spontaneous and chaotic. Both forms of spellwork are valid because ultimately we’re just trying to achieve a result.
Charm:
Charms are physical objects made for a specific purpose that must be left in specific places to carry out their intentions. For example if you make a charm to ward off nightmares you would keep it above your bed. The difference between charm and enchantment is that when you have a charm you’ve made it for a specific purpose. You make a necklace to ward off worrying. You make a satchel, or a cake, or a painting and therefore it is a charm.
Enchantment:
An enchantment is an object that already exists and performing magic on it for a purpose. You would enchant a necklace to help ward against worrying. You would enchant your shoes to help you run faster. You would enchant your lip gloss to help you speak clearer and be more charismatic.
Curse:
A curse is a spell that is casted with negative intentions or outcomes for the target. There are no rules as to why curses should be cast, nor “real reasons” for them. Some people feel curses aren’t for them and that is perfectly acceptable. Some people feel like cursing people for no reason and that is also perfectly acceptable. Cursing itself has no ties to 3 folds, laws of returns or anything of that nature. Those specific beliefs are not curse related, they are typically though not always either Wiccan, or Neo Wiccan beliefs.
Hex:
A hex is similar to a curse as it is a spell with negative intentions on a person. However a hex grows and develops and binds closer to its intended target when certain actions are performed. For example you may hex someone speaking ill of you. Every time they do a negative effect would take place and with increased frequency the hex would become stronger and more powerful.
Palmistry and Sigils
So I see lots of pictures of people drawing sigils on their hands, and I think that’s awesome. But one thing I’m surprised about is that–as far as I know–not many people have incorporated palmistry in with sigils.
As shown on the picture above, different parts of the hand have different correspondences.
A self-love sigil would ideally go on the Mount of Venus.
A sigil for enhanced spiritual awareness would work great drawn on the Lunar Mount.
So yeah, just an idea I wanted to share.
~10 Kinds Of Magical Books~
1. Book Of Shadows- A witch’s book of spells, rituals, personal feelings, etc. It is a general book for any metaphysical or religious information that you wish to put into it, among other things.
2.Bestiary- A sometimes hand-written encyclopedia or manual of mythological and magical creatures and beings, used for reference when you want to work with a non-human energy, or for general research.
3.Grimoire- Usually filled with tables and charts, lists relating to astrological, numerical, and color correspondences; properties of crystals, herbs, trees, etc. Contains moon phase meanings and medicinal properties of plants- This one has an old-timey textbook feel to it, usually.
4.Book Of Mirrors- a special journal, where you ‘reflect’ on things going on in your day to day life, providing deep insights which are invaluable when you’re doing work regarding personal growth. Very helpful with developing personal spiritual philosophies.
5.Book Of Moons- A book entirely relating to the moon and it’s cycles, names of the moons of each month, their attributes and energies, dates of lunar eclipses as well as full moon dates of upcoming moons. Filled with vast knowledge of lunar attributes and special dates of red moons, blue moons, etc.
6.Dream Journal- Here you record the dreams you have in as much detail as you can remember, and some people draw images from their dream adventures in this book as well, since dreams use the language of symbolism and imagery. You interpret the meanings of your dreams in here too, if you wish. Dreams can help us get a glimpse into our subconscious and the more dreams you write the easier it becomes for you to remember them.
7. Book of Visions- A vision book is used with the law of attraction, it is a ‘vision board’ in book form. Put different images of things you want in life, be they experiences, physical items, money, health, etc, in the pages of the book. Open the book up to pictures of what you want to visualize having. Think of this as an on-the-go vision board, except with much more space as there are so many pages!
8.Book Of Positive Aspects- At the top of each page you write the name of a topic that you are unhappy with, like ‘the workplace’ for example. Below the topic title you begin listing all the positive aspects of the subject, and by the end of your list your emotions will be in a much better place regarding the topic. You can do a list a day or many in one sitting, it is a valuable tool for cultivating positive energy or for switching viewpoints on things that normally would upset you.
9.Gratitude Journal- A book where you write about EVERYTHING you are thankful and appreciative for in your life right now. You feel overwhelmed with love and positivity when writing in this book, which aids you in raising your vibration and frequency.
10. Book Of Intuitions- a psychic journal, it’s a book where all divination and psychic exercises are recorded, ranging from full tarot spreads, to tea leaf readings, even psychic impressions you pick up off people. It’s handy for tracking progress as well as for record keeping.
