WOLFMAN and WARWOLF

A wolfman person is someone who keeps their true thoughts and desires hidden away from everyone, even their close friends and family. They don’t let anyone get too close from them, and it is difficult to tell what they actually think or believe from their behavior. They cloak themself in a layer of mystique and obscurity, and often draw strength from attaching themself to an imagined identity or a distant set of ideals -- for example, they may feel more of an affinity for an ancient civilization than the country they live in, or with a particular species of animal instead of humanity. Indeed, they likely fantasize about being an animal, and/or relate much more to animals than to the people around them. 

A warwolf person is similar, except that they are more assertive and less fearful of people knowing who they are. A warwolf person’s complex layers of identity are less of a defense mechanism and more of a tool. They are good at being a different sort of person in different situations, although they probably specialize heavily in one in particular. For example, they may be a teacher, performer, or therapist who acts and speaks very differently when they are *on* and at work, shedding their outer layers only when in private.

NOROWARA and KYONPAN

A norowara person is prone to obsessing over people and things, often in a negative way. They simply cannot let things go, and stew in their dark thoughts and grudges. They are the sort to carefully plan out their enemies’ downfall well in advance, or wait months or years for just the right moment to shame them. They are very petty, willing to harm themselves to avenge insults. They have a long memory and an undeterrable will, and often present a falsely cheery countenance. 

A kyonpan person moves through life in a daze, struggling to summon enough energy to tend to their tasks but somehow pushing forward through a sort of fatigued determination. They have very one-sided relationships with other people, relying entirely on them to maintain their energy levels and emotional stability. They may appear inoffensive and harmless on the outside, but have creepy thoughts and a dark soul.

RINRIN and BERUNRUN

A rinrin person experiences a constant pull between two contrasting motivations: a desire to remain in the shadows, and a desire to be heard. They hate to be forced into the center of attention, but crave others’ approval. They are the sort of person who likes to wear dark clothing and sit silently and elusively in the corner of a room, but has certain situations in which they like to be noticed and appreciated; for example, they might like to perform as a singer or dancer, or to be noticed for their art or writing. 

A berunrun person is similar, except that they are more decisive in delineating their boundaries. They are probably less polite and cuddly than a rinrin person, and specialize more heavily in their pursuits.

For my 100th entry on this blog, I thought I’d do something a little different, and kick off a series of my interpretations of several of the famed beta pokemon (from both gen 1 and 2). Of course, as we lack any official information or pokedex entries about these guys, so please keep in mind that my interpretations will be a lot more abstract and subjective, and probably pretty short, too. Anyhow, for the first entry in this little series, I thought I’d start with arguably the most popular and beloved of the beta pokes, Kotora and Raitora. 

KOTORA and RAITORA

A kotora person has a bright, bouncy countenance, and tends to be robustly cheerful and whimsically childlike. They naturally radiate happiness, but also fizzle with chaotic energy, with they tend to release in spikes and spurts. They can be rather unpredictable and spontaneous, but appear perpetually guileless and friendly.

A raitora person is very similar, except that despite maintaining a generally childlike demeanor, they are better at adulting, and tend to be a little more assertive and confident.

WINGULL

A wingull person is carefree, easygoing, and optimistic. They manage to breeze through life despite being rather low-energy, as they have a knack for doing things in the easiest, most efficient way. They have the gift of foresight, being good planners who can easily anticipate events and consequences before they happen. They tend to specialize in a few narrow interests or skills, and can be fragile and prone to breakdowns if seriously stressed, but by leaning heavily into these specializations they generally excel enough to avoid encountering too much stress. They tend to be rather noncommittal and fickle, hating to be tied down anywhere for too long, and are probably adventurous and fond of travel.

MARACTUS

A maractus person is snappy, sassy, and aggressively cheerful. They are full of life and vigor, and radiate energy and positivity. They hate to stay still or be quiet for too long, and deal with problems actively: for example, they are the sort of person who would respond to bad news or disappointment by going for a long run, rather than moping quietly in their room. When life tries to drag them down, they respond by aggressively countering any negativity they experience, such as by throwing parties, going out on the town, or taking frequent vacations. They only ever listen to happy music and have a strong preference for high-energy environments.

ARCHEN

An archen person is someone who is a generalist in many aspects of their life -- a true jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. They stumble through diverse situations but somehow manage to scrape by in different pursuits through sheer force of will and their undeniable charisma. They truly embody the “fake it ‘til you make it” philosophy, and have an underlying resilience that allows them to do adequately well even in situations where they are not as skilled as their friends or colleagues. They just keep chugging along through life, not worrying about how they compare to others, or to arbitrary standards of competence. Good enough is good enough.

MINCCINO

A minccino person is polite, clean, and dutiful. They keep their living spaces tidy, are good at maintaining their hygiene and appearance, and always greet others with a smile and a kind word. They are quite social, and on any outing with friends they are very talkative and attentive. If a minccino person has one great weakness, it is that their concern for maintaining order in their lives can become excessive, so that they feel disproportionately anxious and upset whenever things don’t go as planned. They are the sort of person who enters every upcoming event in their schedule, and never forgets an appointment.

SALANDIT and SALAZZLE

A salandit person has a sharp, focused demeanor and a tremendous force of will that allows them to overpower and outmaneuver others in social situations. They find it easy to influence others’ thoughts and convince them of their own opinions and worldview, and have a knack for devising the most incisive things to say. They are quick-thinking and cunning, skilled at concealing their emotions and performing tasks discreetly. Nevertheless, a salandit person’s social skills flow from their ability to read others based on their own experiences; they often simply don’t know how to handle someone who is especially carefree or lazy. Above all, a salandit person is a busybody who loves to belong to a group, and prefers the emotional security of having someone more experienced whose orders or advice they can follow.

A salazzle person is similar in most respects, except that they are happy only if they are the one who is giving out the advice or orders to their friends and colleagues. They have a deep, instinctive need to be the boss or ringleader, and to be adored by a large circle of friends and admirers. They feel a stinging bitterness towards those who ignore, neglect, or mistreat them, and tend to grow rather dependent on others’ affection and dutifulness.

WISHIWASHI

A wishiwashi person is someone who is very fearful, weak-willed, paranoid, anxious, and sorrowful in their natural state, when they are left to themself. Indeed, when they are alone, there is hardly anyone who appears more pitiful than a wishiwashi person. However, a wishiwashi person’s main defense mechanism is to seek out the company of their friends and family, in whose presence they syngerize brilliantly, feeding off each other’s energy and becoming vastly more confident and productive. They are acutely empathetic, naturally drawn towards those who, like them, are vulnerable to distress. Unlike a falinks person, a wishiwashi person does not necessarily spend all their time in a group, instead being distinguished by the fact that they basically have two sharply-contrasting emotional states -- confident (in a group), and pathetic (when solitary). Somewhat ironically, despite their utter dependency on others, a wishiwashi person reflexively isolates themself when things get particularly tough, returning to their group only when they’ve recovered their strength somewhat.

CLOBBOPUS

A clobbopus person is very confident and versatile. They are someone who has a fairly small comfort zone, but has no fear about leaving it. They are enthusiastic about trying new things, and if things go poorly for them in one situation, they remain cool-headed and simply move on to something else. A clobbopus person has a perfect blend of book-smarts and street-smarts; they are curious and intellectual, but generally prefer to get their hands dirty completing projects rather than writing papers or reading books. They are the sort of person who would prefer to fly to the jungles of southeast Asia to set up camera traps to observe an endangered species, rather than write a scientific article analyzing data that someone else gathered. A clobbopus person’s boisterousness often helps them to be productive and energetic, but can also overwhelm those around them and may sometimes lead to social blunders.

PINCURCHIN

A pincurchin person is a rather humble, low-energy person who moves slowly through life with little energy or decisiveness. They are prone to feelings of vulnerability, and put up defenses that make it hard for other people to get close to them. A pincurchin person ends up devoting a lot of their energy towards keeping people and problems away from them, and prefers to deal with people in a detached, artificial way -- that way, if things go badly or if others reject them, it is only a stiff, hollow projection of the self, and not the true self, that gets damaged. Nevertheless, a pincurchin person does have a quiet, passive inner strength; they are able to push through tasks untiringly when they need to, and are surprisingly efficient and decisive when conditions are ideal for them.

EISCUE

An eiscue person is someone who loves their peace and quiet, and their high sensitivity means that they suffer when outside their comfort zone, so they spend quite a bit of energy and time shielding themselves from more high-energy environments, which they find stressful. Their comfort zone and natural preferences differ quite a bit from those of other people, so they can appear quite odd and idiosyncratic. However, if an eiscue person has sufficient time and energy to keep themselves happy, they become very chill, easygoing, even lazy. They are quite xenophilic and open-hearted, and don’t feel any strong bonds of loyalty for any particular group or identity; they float free through life and are utterly ambivalent to labels or attachments. Despite their seeming relaxedness in some situations, however, an eiscue person is someone who deals poorly with disappointment, and is prone to waves of depression when faced with failure or when others insult or interfere with them. An eiscue person may come across as comical or light-hearted in some respects, but is usually rather stiff, closed-off, and inexpressive; the main emotion that they do show from time to time is that of worry, when their defenses break down.

CLAYDOL

A claydol person has an old, old soul. They do not care especially for the modern era; they are naturally fascinated with the ancient world, and probably feel an extremely strong affinity for one or two ancient cultures in particular. They might use modern technology for some tasks but feel no deep dependence on it, and probably find it confusing and bothersome. They probably like to read physical books, cook and wash things by hand, and spend a lot of time in silence or quiet. Despite their disregard for much of modernity, they probably feel distant from nature, viewing most nonhuman animals as alien and fearsome, and being comfortable spending all their time indoors. They are strongly spiritual, with a particularly deep reverence for gods, spirits, ceremonies, and beliefs; they reflexively interpret situations supernaturally, and are the sort of person to respectfully greet the ghosts who inhabit a hotel room when they first check in. Despite being quite mentally and spiritually grounded, a claydol person is not especially resilient, and even slightly sub-optimal conditions can very quickly wear them down. A claydol person learns to protect themself by planning ahead and convincing others to help them, and by maintaining their spiritual health through things like meditation and religious participation; if they fail to take such measures they struggle to accomplish the simplest things.

PYUKUMUKU

A pyukumuku person is someone who favors comfortable, easygoing, relaxed environments, but is forthright and steadfast in defending their personal space. They do not hesitate to stick up for themselves if others cross them, but they do not go looking for conflict. Despite their flare-ups of anger, a pyukymuku person is actually rather passive and helpless, has a narrow comfort zone, and is very dependent on others’ help when they get overwhelmed. They have difficulty managing their own affairs and tend to have a defensive, stay-put mentality when stressed. However, although a pyukumuku person lacks the resources and energy to get themselves out of tough situations, they are able to weather them for quite a long time while they wait for help to come along.

GOOMY

A goomy person is quite low-energy, reserved, and rather lazy, and prefers to remain in slow-paced, low-stress, easygoing environments. They are unfocused and inefficient, and approach everything with a breezy, happy-go-lucky attitude. They tend to be evasive and noncommittal, and somehow always manage to wriggle blissfully free of sticky situations. Nothing ever gets them feeling down for long, and they are everlastlingly chilled out. Nevertheless, despite appearances, a goomy person is actually very easily stressed and fatigued by anxiety-inducing people and factors; one of the reasons they are so chill is that they go to great lengths to completely avoid stress. Indeed, they are ever-vigilant of potential stressors and tiresome obligations, which they avoid like the plague.
