(Aster Wolffe is Jacob, Caretaker is Edward, Sundrop is Bella)
The Snuggly Duckling, read the sign out front. Bella looked at it skeptically. The tavern it was attached to didn’t look snuggly in the slightest. It looked whatever the opposite of snuggly was. Thorny, perhaps. Foreboding. She could actually smell the rot coming off it.
Still, Aster seemed confident, and he wouldn’t lead her anywhere too dangerous—he had his own life to consider, after all. Presumably.
“Ah, the Snuggly Duckling,” said Aster, nodding wisely, “my favorite, uh, food place. Very good… food.” He sounded unsure. Bella turned to squint at him. He smiled brightly, flashing his teeth. Bella squinted harder. Aster slung an arm about her shoulders. She pointed her frying pan at him. He released her shoulders.
Aster all but dragged Bella to the door, pulling it open. Bella recoiled.
The tavern smelled like mold, rot, and grease. Bella could taste something else in the back of her mouth, a sickly sweet taste oddly like bile, or vomit. She clenched her jaw and walked inside, Aster hot on her heels.
There were people everywhere, people with hooks for hands and swords at their belts, people whose eyes glowed in the dim torchlight, people with weapons and teeth and—
Someone caught Bella’s hair. She yelped in pain, snatching it back. Aster paused to chat with the man who’d done it. To chat. Bella gathered her hair to herself, turning so she could keep an eye on the man. He was a tall, broad man with long hair. He looked oddly like Aster, in a way.
Bella smacked into someone, and turned around, brandishing her frying pan. The woman she’d run into was also tall, and broad, with short hair that looked like she’d hacked it off herself. She had a small tattoo beneath her left eye in the shape of a moon.
“Say, Goldilocks, you don’t look so good,” Aster said, slinging an arm around Bella’s shoulders. She didn’t push him off, almost relieved to have familiar contact. “Can’t imagine why, this is, of course, a five-star restaurant. Maybe we need to get you home.”
A hand slammed the door shut, a hand that held a poster. The poster had Aster’s face on it, and a substantial sum of money. The hand belonged to a lanky boy with long hair who glared at Aster.
“That’s you,” he said flatly.
Aster said, “Fuck.”
The next minute was what Bella imagined being in a tornado would be like. She was shoved aside, and forward, and yanked backwards, and tipped over, and she fell on her butt with her hair splayed about her, Aster nowhere to be found. She got to her feet and climbed on a bar stool to look over the crowd: they were all so tall.
She found him, smack in the center of everyone, being gripped by at least six different people, with various weapons pointed at him. He actually looked fearful.
Bella sectioned off a chunk of hair, pinpointing the supposed leader: the girl she’d run into. She threw the chunk of hair, catching the girl about the wrist, and yanked. The girl went flying backwards.
“PUT HIM DOWN!”
The girl skidded to a halt, actually grinding her heels into the floor, and everyone turned to Bella. She raised her chin, jumped from the stool, and crossed to Aster, tugging him away.
“I need him—” she pointed to Aster—“to take me to see the lanterns, like I’ve been dreaming and praying for my whole life! Haven’t any of you had a dream?”
The woman stood, glaring at Bella, and crossed to them. Aster pushed Bella behind him, crossing his arms. He was nearly a full head and shoulders taller than the woman. This did not bother her.
“You’ve got some nerve showing your face around here, Wolffe,” she growled. The crowd around them chuckled. Bella wondered what joke she’d missed. “I ought to tear your pelt from you and display it on my wall for what you did.” She jabbed a thumb behind her. Bella didn’t dare look.
“Leah,” said Aster, his voice hard, “I’ve apologized several times. I don’t really know what you want from me.”
“Your head on a spike,” supplied one of the men in the crowd. Aster looked at him sharply. “She’s detailed it to us. Several times.”
“Jared,” snapped Leah, the woman, “shut your mouth.” She glared at Aster a moment longer, and then turned and simply walked away. The crowd seemed to follow some sort of unspoken signal at that; they parted and walked off. A slightly smaller, younger boy crossed to them. He smiled brilliantly at Aster, his teeth slightly crooked.
“We missed you,” he said, pulling Aster into a hug. Bella heard something crack, and winced. Aster didn’t seem to notice, snorting and pushing the kid back. The kid had his hair back in a tight braid, intertwined with flowers. He saw Bella looking and inclined his head to her. “Hello! I like your… hair.”
“Thanks,” said Bella, her earlier bravado gone, “I like yours, too.”
He smiled even wider at that, and then turned and disappeared.
Most of the crowd came and greeted Aster individually, all seeming to find his name oddly funny. Bella didn’t bother asking why, but she didn’t dare leave Aster’s side. Despite what he said, this place felt… wrong. Like she was being watched.
Only two people did not rise to greet them: two fair skinned women who sat in a corner. They reminded Bella oddly of her Caretaker, which sent a pant of guilt through her. She avoided their eyes. They were both breathtakingly beautiful, in the same way “Caretaker” was. It bordered on unpleasant to look upon them.
At some point, the two slipped away, the short, black-haired one in front, the burlier, blonde one behind her. The whole tavern seemed to relax at their exit, save for Bella. Her skin prickled uncomfortably.
After Quil, Embry, Collin, Brady, Jared, Paul, and Sam said hello to Aster (Bella catalogued their names; it was a lot to remember for someone who’d only ever spent her time with one man,) Aster tugged her to the bar. Leah sat there, with the flower-hair boy from earlier. The flower-hair boy smiled at them; Leah did not. She didn’t acknowledge them.
Aster ordered food, and Bella shook off the unsettling feeling to watch him, careful to note what he did. It seemed her “peopling” skills were not up to scratch.
A shiver traced cold, sharp fingernails down her spine. Someone standing on her grave.
Edward had lived too many years to make mistakes. He was so close to having everything he’d ever wanted; he wasn’t relinquishing it now.
So the unsettling feeling in his mind that something had happened was enough to drive him to the tower. He cleared it in seconds, the weathered stone no match for his uncanny strength. He knocked in the shutters, and stood alone.
Dust settled around him in a thin layer. He inhaled slowly, eyes flickering, measuring the area around him.
She was gone.
Edward snarled once, the sound filling the area around them, and turned to leave, tearing the shutters off and hurling them down. They slammed into the ground with a startling sound, promptly shattering to splinters.
Edward would find who had taken his Sundrop, and he would kill them.
Edward had lived too many years to make mistakes.
okay look i know it’s been like seven years of wait for a sucky chapter, i’m sorry, life happened and i’ve been super tired frskdjddj hopefully i’ll be more consistent in the future but no promises
A TikTok video made by @shinanova shows a woman in a black sleeveless shirt, dangling white (feather? fur?) earrings, and a gray fur cuff on her wrist pointing to captions between still photos illustrating the issue. Soft electronic music plays on the background.
Captions read : "Did you know how insanely expensive food costs in indigenous communities?"
Cartons of strawberries are shown on grocery shelves for 14.39. Kraft smooth peanut butter jars for 11.19. Bottles of Heinz ketchup for 16.79. Bags of green grapes for 28.19. Photos of protestors follow : Two tall men in ball caps and a third, shorter person in a fur lined hood. The man in the middle holds two signs on pieces of cardboard that read "Stop the crazy prices!" and "I have to feed my family!" The third person also holds a sign on a large yellow piece of posterboard, but the text is cut off by the framing. Two more people holding signs on orange and yellow posterboards, respectively. Posters read "High cost food in Nunavut" and "Food is expensive in Nunavut". Returning to the woman making the video, she points to more captions : "What can you do? Spread awareness about the issue. Support Indigenous People's and donate. Share the causes you find most important at Www.UnwreckTheFuture.Com to fight food insecurity" followed by an emoji of a solidarity/fight the power fist (hand closed into a fist, viewed from the thumb curled in front of the knuckles)
Is it just me or is anyone else mad that none of the vampires in Twilight besides Jasper have had any vampire exes/past lovers? Wouldn’t there just be so much more angst and drama if like one day Carlisle’s Volturi lover showed up?
Reminder to donate here to the Quileutes to help them move to higher ground away from the tsunami zone. Don’t buy Smeyer’s racist book and aid the people she stole from. If you want to read Midnight Sun like a lot of us, there’s gonna be PDFs circling online so you don’t have to waste your money on her book.
Since I've experienced many headaches trying to find ALL THE TWILIGHT FONTS I'm here to give you a complete master rundown of all the fonts used in the Twilight books (those that I own at least) as far as I know.
SO.
1. The Twilight Title Font - Zephyr
This font is used for the titles (no caps) of all the main series books, including Midnight Sun (it is not used for Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined). It is also used in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide, for the all-red divider pages within sections (Ex. "Covens") and as the font for the Coven Headers and character homes headers (Ex. The Volturi, and The Volturi Lair). This is the easiest font to identify that is used in the series.
2. Character Handwriting Fonts
All of the character's handwriting fonts are ridiculously easy to find and here they are:
1. Bella's - Pablo
2. Edward's - Carmilla
3. Alice's - Joe Hand
4. Jacob's - "Almagro"
5. Charlie's - Asa
6. Aro's - Lucida Blackletter
3. Body Text
Here's where my deep dive required a LOT MORE DETECTIVE WORK.
1. Easier to find was the body font for the main series books: American Garamond BT. Most important distinction here from standard Garamond is the style of the number characters.
2. Requiring old fashioned elbow grease was the body text font for Midnight Sun: Sabon. I identified this by the italics.
4. Chapter Title Fonts
WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED that this would be the biggest headache in the whole venture?
Midnight Sun was fairly easy, since I'm fairly certain the title font for that is a bog standard Arial. Nothing distinguishing, very easy.
THE MAIN SERIES, ON THE OTHER HAND I'm still not certain i have nailed down, but after a whole week of searching the closest I've come is to pop in "News Cycle" and scale up to 150%.
So there you go everyone. all the fonts. If i missed one that you might need identified for any fanfiction related reason, do please send me a snap of the font in the book and i will try and track it down.
