i see a lot of people a bit confused on the existence of Nuthong #nuthong in the vein of “give it to me” “are they going to give it to me” “is GMMTV going to give it to me” etc, and — disclaimer i am not an expert or insider at gmm nor am i nuthong nor do i know them personally, but maybe i can clear up some things —
the source material that this show is based on contains multiple novels.
1. yes, their characters are canonically queer in the source material
2. yes, their characters are canonically romantic with each other in the source material.
3. yes, they have an entire novel dedicated to their characters’ story outside of twenty one’s novel. the bulk of THEIR characters story takes place in their respective novel. in twenty one, they’re still just “friends” although hong’s character has a crush on nut’s character, and nut’s character knows about it. which ties into hong saying “if he says we’re just friends then we’re just friends” when nut said they were friends in the show.
however they’re still queer characters even if they’re not explicitly dating each other in this novel. why do i say that? well, because i think if they wanted to shy away from BL, #Nuthong, etc, they wouldn’t pick a BL to act in, nor queer characters, especially not ones who have an entire story about their romance (as toxic as it is, they’re still a couple).
frankly, there were plenty of projects and opportunities for them to act in if they wanted to step into acting but away from #Nuthong or if they wanted to play actual just “besties.”
as for “i want it!!” (understandable they have great chemistry!) then please support them going forward. i am sure this decision did not come lightly. as i said, if they wanted to pursue acting, they could’ve done it separately or in any of the non QL or bromance shows. but they’re in a BL and their characters are queer. with each other (later).
why pick these roles of all things? roles where their characters are just hinted at in the first novel but have an entire spin off novel about them? i mean we can only speculate. (my thoughts: that doesn’t feel like shying away from anything if you ask me. if anything, it feels like dipping a toe in, especially since the pilot is a PILOT).
i know there is a lot of concern from people regarding if they “should” pursue acting, BL, whatever it may be because of [insert reasons here]. from fans just looking out for them or people genuinely hating on the idea entirely.
however, respectfully, we are not their managers or friends or family or them and i am sure this step was done intentionally, with thought from all parties. it was their decision to do this at the end of the day. and THEY looked so so happy up on that stage hearing all the cheers of support (well, and a little shy from hong). they have been teasing this for months and we are just realizing that they’ve been dropping hints — they’re clearly excited, as they should be! there has been SO much discourse and back and forth about this in the fandom from people who are well meaning but honestly overstepping.
[trust me i get it to a degree. i am their fan and want the best for them too. and yes, this is a little unprecedented at this specific company, a ship that includes two members of an idol group, wasnt a gmmtv branded pair, and got this big from hype and ghostshipping and chemistry in a show where they interacted like 4 times (and ofc irl as well). so i think comparing their situation to anything or anyone else at gmm is kinda silly. what they do now is completely up to them (+ how much support they get imo. although it’s just as much their right and decision to not go the full BL circuit if they wish, which goes without saying.)
i am sure they’re just as nervous and excited as anyone would be when embarking on a new journey in their careers, and the pilot trailer is the pilot trailer — so much can change in either direction. so if you would like to see more nuthong, then pls support and follow along with them, as much as you would and how you would any other duo who have events, projects, etc together and let it be known!!!! join us in #nuthong nation.
as i said before, this was not a decision that was made lightly and i hope nuthong can see how much support and love they have as they begin this journey, whatever it may be! and that includes their work in lykn, and all the other members as well :)
