Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, was born on June 10th, 1982 at Drottningholm Palace. Born third in line to the Swedish Throne, her full name is Madeleine Thérèse Amelie Josephine. In 1985 Princess Madeleine started pre school and would continue her education in Sweden until graduating upper secondary school in 2001. In the fall of 2001 Princess Madeleine moved to London where she studied English and, in the spring of 2002, she studied basic Swedish Law. In January of 2003 she started at Stockholm University where studied art history and would graduate in January 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in art history, ethnology and modern history. In 2007 she would study child psychology at the University of Stockholm. Princess Madeleine speaks English, German, French, and Swedish fluently.

On August 11th, 2009 Princess Madeleine announced her engagement to longtime boyfriend Jonas Bergström at the approval of the King. The engagement was overshadowed by the events of her sister, Crown Princess Victoria, wedding to Daniel Westling happening in the spring of 2010. It was later announced that the wedding, which was set for late 2010, would be postponed because of Crown Princess Victoria’s wedding. Rumors spread through, of Jonas Bergström alleged infidelity and relationship issues, and in April of 2010 it was announced the engagement had been broken off.

Later that year Princess Madeleine would move to New York, where she could have more privacy from the press, and began working for Queen Silvia’s organization, the World Childhood Foundation. On 25 October 2012, the Swedish Royal Court announced her engagement with the British-born financier Christopher O'Neill, who Princess Madeleine had been dating for two years at the time. Christopher O'Neill had attended the christening of Princess Estelle earlier that year but was otherwise unknown. On June 8th, 2013, Princess Madeleine and Christopher O'Neill married at the Royal Palace Chapel in Stockholm.

In September of 2013 the court announced Princess Madeleine was pregnant with the couple’s first child and on February 20th, 2013 she gave birth to Princess Leonore in New York City. A few months before Princess Leonore’s birth it was announced, out of character for royals, that Princess Madeleine was expecting a girl. In December of 2014 it was announced that Princess Madeleine was expecting a second child to be born in the summer of 2015. In early 2015 Princess Madeleine and Christopher O’Neill moved to Stockholm before moving to London in the fall of that year. On June 13th, 2015 the family attended the wedding of Princess Madeleine’s brother, Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist. Two days later, on June 15th, 2015, Prince Nicolas was born in Sweden. Princess Madeleine continued to perform engagements on behalf of the King and her charities, traveling back and forth between London and Sweden. In August of 2017 it was announced Princess Madeleine was pregnant again with her third child and on March 9th, 2018 Princess Adrienne was born at Danderyd Hospital. All three children were christened at the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace. In late 2018 the family moved to Florida where Christopher O’Neill would work.

Princess Madeleine is an avid equestrian and has competed in showjumping under the alias ”Anna Svensson”. Along with horses she enjoys skiing and enjoys various forms of art. Princess Madeleine is patron of the organization Min Stora Dag, and is affiliated with Europa Nostra, Carl Johan-League and the Royal Motorboat Club. In 2006, she interned for UNICEF for six months in New York City and worked for the division of Child Protective Services. In 2012, she co-founded the ThankYou by Childhood campaign which works to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the sexual abuse of children and the work the World Childhood Foundation does to prevent it.
