So true!
Itās autism acceptance month so I thought it was a good time to do another one of my doodles. Functioning labels are something thatāve been bothering me for a while.
As always, Iām sure there are spelling/grammar mistakes, despite checking it 3 billion times Iām sure something will have escaped my notice.
This is a very popular view in the autistic community but I donāt claim to represent the views of all autistic people.
Going from memory I think @butterflyinthewell @neurowonderful and @autisticliving have a lot to say about functioning labels so Iām just gonna hopefully wave my bad doodle from a tiny blog at the cool kids :D
I have been dedicating a lot more of my time to guitar lately. I am not by any means a great player yet. But am happy that I have been picking up my acoustic and electric a lot more recently. I may post more because I have many questions while learning. I want to rebuild my passion for it and continue to be more consistent. Anyway, what always made me the most passionate was simply taking some chords I know and finding something that sounds pleasing to my ears and making a little song out of it. I could sing along if I wanted too, but I never made any real lyrics. This always brought me great joy. So I decided to record myself doing it and post it. It may be basic and I still have so much to learn, but I was happy and in the moment and that is one of my favorite feelings while playing. I love music and guitar and slowly but surely I will be able to build the confidence I need to show that more often. Any advice would be nice. :D #music #polymath #learner #autism #acousticguitar #acoustic #electric #guitar #sounds #audiostim #actuallyautistic #sounds #musicadvice #geekynerd #girl #loser #ataraxia #fender #guitaradvice

Youāre right, Iām weird. Part of my weirdness is that I perseverate. That means I keep thinking about things. So, I will keep knocking on your door until I know Martine is okay.Ā
Accurate
The problem with general ignorance is a lot of people donāt know a thing is bad or even exists. We should approach these people with the proper information to sweep some or all of that ignorance away.
Willful ignorance is a bigger problem. These are people who learn about something or hear something is bad, decide the people telling them are beneath them and continue ignoring the problem theyāre promoting.
Iām more afraid of willfully ignorant people than generally ignorant people. Because generally ignorant people may be open to listening while willfully ignorant people accept no POV but their own.
That is why we should find Freddie Highmore on social media and nicely inform him about Autism Speaks. I say nice because who wants to listen to someone who comes at them with an attack? Compliment his acting, tell him you appreciate what heās doing and then give him the Autism Speaks info. Donāt insult him, donāt tell him heās a bad person. Just tell him Autism Speaks is harmful and why.
Weāll know what kind of person he is by how he responds to the info.
Thereās an old idiom that says you attract more flies with honey than with vinegar. It means being nice is more likely to get you heard than being nasty.
My life seems to tell me otherwise. Being nice seems to make people stay away or stop listening. It is almost like I am far too nice and understanding that people don't know what to do with it. I haven't completely come to terms with it myself yet. But it has made my social life very confusing and complicated at times. I agree with this whole heartedly, but I also feel lonely because of it. Does anyone else feel like I do? I would love to feel a lot less alone about this and talk to people who understand.

Stereotype
Thereās nothing wrong with being the āstereotypicalā autistic person. Thereās nothing wrong with being far from the āstereotypicalā autistic person.
Itās okay if you fit the so-called stereotypes associated with a disability.Ā
Itās also okay if you donāt fit the so-called stereotypes associated with a disability.Ā
Everyone experiences disability differently because individuals are different, and different is not less.
I donāt know if I consider myself childlish just because of internalized ableism, but I do know that plenty of altistic people have told me Iām immature so I think the whole ādestroy the stereotype that autistics are childishā argument at least needs more nuance then a catchprase because I exhibit traits that are seen as childish, and those traits should be respected, accommodated for, and represented
that hyper-empathy feel when you donāt know who your emotions belong to
donāt useĀ āautisticā as an insult
donāt use āautisticā as an insult
donāt use āautisticā as an insult
donāt use āautisticā as an insult
Clear your mind here
how to really get to know someone:
- look at their handwriting
- read their favourite book and search for pieces of them within the pages
- listen to their music and let it resonate with you
- go to their favourite place
- stay upĀ ātill 3am and let them spill their heart out to you
- ask them unusual questions that you never even thought would intrigue you
- spend a day with them doing nothing
- look out for the things they subconsciously do when theyāre happy
- watch how their smile forms
Different ways to study
A few of you have been asking about ways to revise (thatās not just making notes). Hereās a list of some different techniques you can use to revise/study:
Notes - making notes is theĀ āstandardā way of studying - summarising information from textbooks/revision guides into your own words
Mind-maps - making these is a great way to organise ideas and link different ideas
Posters - big and colourful posters are a great way to summarise info as well as a more fun way of working
TeachingĀ - teaching others (anyone who will listen to you will do) is a great way, as it will really show whether you reallyĀ know the info by how well you can explain it to someone who knows nothing about it
Videos - watching videos can be a nice and easy way to revise, and are useful for visual and/or auditory learners
Podcasts - you can download and listen to podcasts when you are walking to school etc. which is a great way to get extra revision in, and theyāre great for auditory learners
Flashcards - these can be useful for making really concise notes, as well as making Q&A or key word and definition cards - they are also really compact so you can take them with you
Group study - working with friends can help bounce ideas off each other, bringing up things you might not have thought about alone - you will all have different strengths that will help each other out
Past questionsĀ - doing past papers and looking at mark schemes will help your timings and application of knowledge/exam technique
Write (donāt type)Ā - making notes on tablets/laptops is fine, but when it comes to writing practise essays always write because thatās what you will be doing in the exam (unless you use a laptop for some reason) so itās best to practise for timings etc.
Further readingĀ - reading articles and books around the subject areas will give you a broader idea of the concepts and a better overall understanding
Accents/voices - some people find using different accents or characters of voices helps them remember things (in the exam you can recall info because you remember you said it in an Australian accent for example)
Key word lists - making lists of words and definitions can be useful, as using key words in context in essays/questions is what gets you the higher marks
Post-it notesĀ - writing key ideas on post-it notes and sticking them in places you go commonly (on the fridge, by the light switch, in your bedroom, on the TV etc)Ā
AppsĀ - there are loads of great apps that you can download to make notes and flashcards etc. as well as apps for generally increasing your productivity - see my studying apps post here
Songs/mnemonicsĀ - making funny little songs to remember processes can be really useful, as they really stick in your head
Charts/timelinesĀ - depending on the subject, making timelines and charts can be really useful as a different visual representation
Reblogging this because I still haven't found the best way for me to study so I will figure it out soon.

That autistic / ADHD feel when you want to doā¦Ā something.
I call this āactivity cravingsā because itās like when you want a certain food but you arenāt sure which food. But for activities.
Do I want to go for a walk? Play a game? If so, what kind of game? DO I want to make things? Read? Watch tv? A movie?
sorry i canāt relate to mean people. i can understand not being openly friendly but how can you go out of your way to actively be so meanā¦.on purposeā¦.for funā¦.arenāt u exhausted ā¦
