Without questioning, she followed behind, making sure to leave some
space between them. Mr Gansey would be watching her and flirting with
a client would look bad. Following him back into the house, she stayed
in the kitchen as he moved around, gathering this and that.
She leaned against the counter, looking out the window at the grassy
paddocks and horses that occupied them. There were going to be questions,
she knew that, but there were none she had the answer from. It had been
a peculiar pain, striking suddenly and for seemingly no reason. It had
faded just as quickly. If she concentrated, there was a dull throb in the
exact spot that had started turning red for James.
Turning back with arms crossed over her chest, she watched him curiously.
It was hard to think of what to say when the occurrence had been so bizarre.
Saying the wrong thing would make her sound stupid, or worse, crazy.
“You really should but the ice on that. You’ll bruise your pretty face
if you don’t..”
“I was more concerned with your well being.
Does your head still hurt?”
His eyes scanned her face for any signs of pain or a wound but he saw
none. All he found was concern in her eyes. On the other hand, he could
feel his head throbbing and the man sat down with a heavy sigh, lifting
the ice pack to his forehead. Instantly, it soothed the ache though only
slightly.
“Are you alright?” He asked again, eyes on her.
