Not to be blunt, but photographers are liars. Myself included. We carry around an apparatus that 200 years ago gave the world its first—allegedly—truthful visual medium. Allegedly is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Every image has a selection bias baked in. I decided where to stand, what to include, what to leave out — before I even pressed the clunky shutter. My Hasselblad is a hundred years old, analog, unwieldy. The shaky hands and hidden truths are part of the deal. So is the lie. Photography is far more subjective than it lets on. So should we even try to be truthful, or is abstraction more honest, even in such a pictorial medium? You tell me!Â
