I’ve started a little project for autumn. Sometimes, I find this to be a difficult time of year because I don’t look forward to the impending cold and darkness of winter, but I feel this only makes it even more important for me to celebrate the beauty of it.
I was thinking about doing some kind of art challenge - there are many happening at this time of year, and I felt like I could do with something that would help me experiment a little with relatively low pressure. I’ve participated in those sorts of things before, enjoyed them and found a lot of benefit in terms of development my art practice, but the fact is that they are often very much not low pressure at all - even with a lot of preparation, sometimes creating and posting new artwork on a daily basis, or even every few days, is just too much. One thing I try to prioritise is allowing myself to do things at my own pace without excessive external pressure. To a degree stress is necessary in order to get things done, but there are also many times when it can simply be overwhelming, especially if the purpose of the task is just to experiment freely rather than meet a specific deadline. And I think we can all relate to needing to limit the influence of the social media treadmill in our lives.
So, instead I have kept things relatively loose and chosen a selection of things from this time of year that I love and want to explore. There’s so much inspiration available at the moment and I’m enjoying trying out some different techniques without feeling like anything needs to be perfect. I’ll be posting what I’ve made over the next few weeks, I hope you’ll enjoy seeing it and feel a bit of that autumn magic from it. 🍂🧡
