But Phoebe is starting to understand that on some nights, Lila is probably the loneliest girl in the world, just like Phoebe. And maybe they are all lonely. Maybe this is just what it means to be a person. To constantly reckon with being a single being in one body. Maybe everybody sits up at night and creates arguments in their head for why they are the loneliest person in the world.

I shrug and sip on my coffee. “You think I’m being ridiculous,” I say, half statement, half question. “I think you live in a world that’s more interesting than the one most people live in,” he says, and just as my heart starts to sink with disappointment, with a kind of loneliness, he adds, “and I wish I could live in it too.” I feel myself beaming. “I’ll take you sometime.” “I’d like that,” he says.

When I'm in the bathroom, he orders me a Dr Pepper, which he knows is my favorite. Before we leave, I wipe all the crumbs and used napkins from the table onto our plates and stack them, which I know he appreciates because he tries to be helpful to the busboys. When we get back out to the car, we plot how to ruin each other's lives.

hi! so, i’ve written another poppyalex fic!
you could say it’s a continuation of that one shot i wrote a while ago. actually, my original plan was to write a series of different one shots as part of a collection, but as i was working on this new fic, i realized it was getting way too long to be a one shot, so it turned into a multichapter fic. all the chapters should be out soon, but here’s the first one!
long story short: it’s based on poppy and alex’s cameo in funny story, and they’re visiting waning bay. hope you enjoy it!

Maybe love shouldn’t be built on a foundation of compromises, but maybe it can’t exist without them either. Not the kind that forces two people into shapes they don’t fit in, but the kind that loosens their grips, always leaves room to grow. Compromises that say, there will be a you-shaped space in my heart, and if your shape changes, I will adapt.
+ how i pictured it: elle fanning as nora stephens and jonah hauer-king as charlie lastra
