Improved State Flag of Kansas

colin speaking to any californians thinking of stepping one foot into seattle colorized
Prairies are some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, with the tallgrass prairie being the most endangered. Only 1-4% of tallgrass prairie still exists. Prairies are critically important, not only for the unique biodiversity they possess, but for their effect on climate. The ability to store carbon is a valuable ecological service in today’s changing climate. Carbon, which is emitted both naturally and by human activities such as burning coal to create electricity, is a greenhouse gas that is increasing in the Earth’s atmosphere. Reports from the International Panel on Climate Change, a group of more than 2,000 climate scientists from around the world, agree that increased greenhouse gases are causing climate change, which is leading to sea level rise, higher temperatures, and altered rain patterns. Most of the prairie’s carbon sequestration happens below ground, where prairie roots can dig into the soil to depths up to 15 feet and more. Prairies can store much more carbon below ground than a forest can store above ground. In fact, the prairie was once the largest carbon sink in the world-much bigger than the Amazon rainforest-and its destruction has had devastating effects.

I just have to add–that extensive root system? It’s not just how the plant eats, and how it keeps itself from getting pulled out of the ground during storms, or dying when its aboveground portion is eaten… it’s how it talks to its friends and family, how it shares food with its friends and family, and more than likely, how it thinks. That’s a whole plant brain we’ve domesticated away, leaving a helpless organism that has trouble figuring out when it’s under attack by pests, what to do about it, has very little in the way of chemical defense so it can do something about it, and can’t even warn its neighbors. Even apart from the ecological concerns, what we’ve done is honestly pretty cruel.
Here’s some more articles on this too! https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/may/02/plants-talk-to-each-other-through-their-roots http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20141111-plants-have-a-hidden-internet

Whether or not you think this should qualify as a form of “intelligence” as we know it (which in itself as a pretty nebulous and poorly defined thing), plants exhibit complicated interactive behaviors that help them grow and thrive, and the way we harvest a lot of them for our produce just doesn’t even give them a chance to reach their maturity and begin trading nutrients the way they’re supposed to.
ya'know, maybe the reason rural, small-town people don’t trust national media is because national news outlets pretty much ignore 85% of the country.
nebraska is literally flooded, at least one person has died and three are missing, 60 thousand have evacuated… and the first cnn article about this went up like ten minutes ago and only mentioned flooding around omaha.
like. i’m from omaha and i’m frustrated by the lack of attention the rest of our state is getting. someone died, and you’re not going to mention that? how was this not a story worth reporting this morning? are nebraskan farmers and small-town citizens not just as important as the californians displaced by wildfires, or southern/east coast people affected by hurricanes?
when we complain about nebraska being ignored, we’re not really talking about not having shows set in nebraska, as much as we might want that. we’re talking about this — thousands of people losing their homes, their livelihood, and yet no one seems to think it’s worth mentioning.
when hurricanes devastated the south last year, nebraskans donated what we could to help those affected. we sent trucks filled with donated items and coordinated with shelters and organizations to make sure we actually sent things that were needed. i’m just saying, it would be nice to see some of that support in turn. even if it’s just bringing attention to this.
At the very least you would think that the farmlands that feed most of the US being flooded would be important to someone other then us Nebraskans. But we are ignored. At best Omaha is briefly mentioned. At worst we’re ridiculed and looked down upon because we’re just some dumb hicks with a boring state and a laughing stalk of a football team.
I’m terrified for my fellow Nebraskans because even us in the city don’t have enough money to be the only ones who donate. This needs more recognition because more people will die because of exposure after the fact.

I live in Fremont Nebraska. We are literally a fucking island right now. There is no way in or out of town. Half our town is flooded and the water is still expecting to rise. Two of my friends have lost their homes and one lost pets.
The thing about the flooding is that the other half of Nebraska is experiencing blizzards. Our whole state is in anarchy right now. There’s no water left in fremont. Two of our leveys have broke and our dam is being held together through sheer fucking will. This is fucking terrifying okay? Even if me and my family wanted to leave we CAN’T. If fremont get’s flooded anymore where are we going to evac to? We can’t. We can’t get out of town. Why has this not been a fucking emergency yet?
Currently my family is okay, but were close to losing our home too.
If you can spare anything please. PLEASE Donate. Nebraska is in need of a lot of help right now…
I live smack-dab in the middle of the state, four hours away from Omaha, and these are some pictures my friends and family have taken.
There are so many bridges out, so many roads impassable. Hundreds of people are stranded.
See this little island? Zoom in. Those are cows. Stranded, freezing, with no food, in the middle of calving season.
People have been losing 3 out of every 5 baby cows, because they are freezing in the mud before farmers and ranchers can even get to them.
This is my Uncle’s house, on the left
It’s a two story, and that water is six feet below the roof. They have my grandparent’s camper parked next the the barn (on the right) and you can’t even see it. My uncle has three young kids, the oldest of which has severe cerebral palsy, and now they’re living out of a hotel. My aunt only had time to pack two suitcases for the five of them. They had to leave everything else.
Really you guys, Nebraska has been flooded before, we have tornadoes every year, our temperatures are just as extreme as Chicago or Phoenix - but this is so much worse than any of that. I know there are worse things going on in the world, but this is happening too, and it’s going to impact so much more than most people think it will. Nebraska is a huge supplier of beef, pork, corn, and soybeans. Just in my hometown we have a huge Tyson processing plant that is weeks behind in production because the trucks can’t get through, and it’s costing a lot of people their jobs. This is serious.
This seems like something the president should declare a national emergency.
The damage caused by this, some farmers are saying is not repairable. With the huge loss in livestock and damage (many in this region already super poor from bad prices in recent years) many of these farmers will never be able to return to their livelihoods, without help… this is going to cause serious problems for all of the USA . A lot of farmers have tried to just sell off as many animals as possible to slaughter instead of trying to see through these coming weeks (no food, or safety, for the animals) and it’s already caused a 40% drop in beef prices, just because of this storm… so they are losing money no matter what they do. It’s horrifying to read about.

Majors: Ethan = Originally Political Science, switched to History or English Macen = Nursing Logan = Psychology Toby: Education (probably is a double minor in history and physical education) Colin: Business Administration
Logan/Colin and Ethan/Macen share dorm rooms respectively. Toby stays in a frat.
Ethan and Macen tend to keep their dorm room relatively clean. Usually they spend a small part of Sunday picking up if they need to but its usually just sweeping, picking up clothes, doing laundry.
Logan and Colin on the other hand actively fight just about every other day about Logan’s messy side of the room. Colin’s resorted to picking up things for him but Logan gets mad about him throwing out things he wants to keep. It got to a point for a few weeks that Colin put a piece of tape down the middle of the room. A RA eventually had to get involved.
Their dorm always smells like coffee no matter what. Ethan and Macen’s has faint scent of peaches, cotton and floral scents. They switch back and forth from buying a febreeze insert for their plug in.
Macen has a mini fridge, microwave and a single burner despite the fact it’s very much against dorm policy.
Toby leaves a bunch of stuff in the dorm that he’d get in trouble for at the frat. Ethan and Macen eventually decided to buy a tub and disguise it for him that’s in the corner of the room.
By their second year Ethan and Macen got so used to getting their laundry mixed up that they just have a shared dirty laundry basket, typically at least once a week they wear each others clothes.
Out of the 5 of them Logan and Toby are the only ones that have a car. Toby does obviously because he’s from a rich family. Logan’s is technically supposed to be shared with Ethan, but that won’t stop him from plastering THOT PATROL on the front windshield and saying it’s his. Ethan refuses to drive it for that same reason too.
Ethan’s fallen asleep in the library at least once in a study room and it was mentioned in the school paper.
Toby really is one of those guys that just carries a jug of water around.
Ethan has a part-time job at some type of place that just doesn’t fit him at all. Like Starbucks or LUSH.
Colin takes advantage of this and talks Ethan into letting him use his discount for whichever place.
Toby has a spare key to Macen and Ethan’s dorm and very often just shows up past dark. Much to Ethan’s ire waking up and looking across the room to Toby scrolling on his phone and Macen nowhere in sight.
Toby and Macen met previously in high school
macen has a box of snacks that’s constantly full and he lets ethan (and toby) eat out of it as much as they want
toby is probably on either the football or basketball team, as is ethan
against advice, toby proposed to macen in the middle of their college career, but they’re so steady no one doubts that they’re going to make it
colin spent a semester abroad in japan, since he’s minoring in japanese
tbh macen probably spent the same semester abroad in korea, leaving the guys alone with each other, which became disastrous immediately
elliot is their dorm’s RA :)
at least once colin has come back to the dorm and found the microwave smoking and logan scrubbing spaghetti sauce off the walls
eventually though colin gets an off campus apartment and lets ethan stay with him a lot; they might as well live with each other at some point
They attend University of Washington
Elliots room is filled with a bunch of potted plants. None of the people in charge of the dorms want to tell him he can’t drill a hole in the ceiling for a hanging plant.
Only reason he even agreed to be an RA is because he’d get his own room.
Logan just doesn’t understand why he can’t come to the frat parties with Toby. :(
Ethan once found a lost kitten on campus and tried to keep it in the dorm for about a week. Colin helped Ethan find it a good home when he was told he’d have to give it up animal control.
Logan sometimes gets in a mood to wear basketball shorts to class, even in cold weather. There have been mornings where it’s been freezing outfit and Colin’s watched as Logan puts on basketball shorts and a hoodie and thought he’s been fine. Colin’s also had to block Logan from leaving and demanding he at least put on sweat pants because he’s not letting his friend freeze his ass off.
On the other hand some days Logan goes to class in a dress shirt and casual cardigan/sweater for absolutely no reason. Colin doesn’t realize before then Logan even owned them, he’s never seen them in the closet. The next day Logan is wearing something he slept in to class.
Ethan’s most prized possession is his Nintendo Switch™ He bought it while at college and walked in with the big box beaming when he finally had the money to get it.
Colin’s never gotten used to the shared bathroom -- huge part of the reason he wanted to move out.
Colin drags the boys out into Seattle at least every weekend to get the full experience of living there.
Toby and Macen never got the hang of winters in Washington
