okay so i got like, three books delivered this week, and in anticipation i reread another book that i had, and lads, let me tell ye, it was like quicksand. so now i have a list, some from my head, many from my wonderful friends’ heads, of prompts that basically made us all very soft or very “pleasantly scandalized rich lady from the sixties who just found out a juicy bit of goss about the new neighbor”. i hope ye like them! (DO NOT ADD TO THE LIST. I WILL MAKE A PART TWO. AND THREE. AND FOUR. MANY MANY PARTS. EVENTUALLY. )

[ HAIR ]:          sender slowly reaches out to catch a loose strand of the receiver’s hair and tuck it gently and securely back behind their ear, letting their touch linger afterwards. (if the receiver has short hair, then the sender reaches out and gently runs their fingers through their hair to smooth it back.)

[ CLOSE ]:          while standing remarkably close to one another, the sender is unable to stop themselves from running their gaze across the receiver’s body, lingering for a moment on their lips, before returning to initiate prolonged, intense eye contact.

[ CHIN ]:          as they stand close to one another, the sender hooks a finger and tenderly lifts the receiver’s chin, tilting it up so that they can look at one another, and running a thumb across their skin lightly.

“  when  were  you  going  to  tell  me  about  this  ?  ” asked zac. / @popwells​

it wasn’t a secret. augustine felt like there was nothing to hide: no reason to lie … it just never came up. but, why would it? there was meant to be established trust here. he shouldn’t have to worry about this type of thing … but they weren’t official. no labels — no, no … doesn’t excuse any form of dishonesty. her phone was tossed into his lap, text conversation with jay from the first night at the hospital on display. after whatever the hell went on at her house with josie … well, she was done with secrets. wanted to be … honest. transparent with him.

“i wasn’t,” she stands before him, as if she’s a lawyer in front of a judge. hands clasped in front of her – mascara stains from josie still fresh on the sleeve of her shirt – and in this moment, her heart raced. fingers twitching at her side with a desperate desire to just grab onto him, console herself, ease his nerves. but that wasn’t fair. not fair to him, not to her. “see, when i saw that …” what did she even feel – “i didn’t say that to him when i was stable, obviously. i was … fucking loopy, i honestly don’t even … remember it,” and that was the truth. she didn’t know she had been awake until he was at her side, “and when i saw it, i was upset with myself, and i didn’t want to hurt you – and so, i didn’t say anything, and i wasn’t going to,”

but what changed? what sparked this sudden desire to spill her heart, the secrets that were laid to rest almost two months ago – “his sister, josie, came to my house today. and for the first time since i saw those texts, i had to unblock him, and i had to see him. and i’ve been avoiding him because of those texts,” she’s quiet for a moment, and then there’s a sharp inhale, “and because right before … y’know,” the shooting, “i cut everything off with him. we had this huge fight, and i was done because i finally … i finally knew what it was like to be wanted, and to be cared for without having to beg for scraps of affection –” and she can feel her eyes welling with tears, but she won’t let them fall – won’t make this about poor auggie – because this wasn’t fair for him.

“i didn’t want to ruin anything with us, so i didn’t want to tell you. but there’s no point in there being an us if i can’t tell you, or show you things that happen, and if i don’t feel comfortable having conversations with you that could change things –” but that was the difference. she did feel comfortable, and so the topic had been placed in front of him. life was hard, things took work, and this was something that obviously needed work.

“i do love him,” a short nod and a slip of a tear that is quickly pushed away. she isn’t sure where to go from there, but she doesn’t want to end it on that note. augustine couldn’t have him thinking that that was it – some weird moment of admitting her true feelings for her past lover, “and part of me is always going to, even if i don’t want to. and i don’t want to. i want to be able to sit here and tell you that you’re the only person i’ve ever felt this way for, and that he isn’t important to me anymore – but i can’t,” lips press together and she gestures back to her phone.

“i was vulnerable. i was scared, and disoriented. and i trust him. and he was the first person i texted. and i couldn’t tell you why. but, what i can tell you, is that i want to be with you. i want to be honest, and i want to us to work more than anything i’ve ever wanted before. i want to make memories with you that block out everything bad, because being with you has made me happier than i’ve ever been,” and for some reason, it feels like she’s made a mistake. feels like the world is swallowing her whole, and the room around her starts to feel foreign. “i don’t … i don’t want to lose you, so if you need time — i can go,”

zac is quiet. the question was the only thing he managed to get out before his lips formed a straight line and they remained that way ever since. he shouldn’t be surprised. he’s a little irritated that he’s surprised. he knew what he was getting into with auggie, knew she harbored feelings for jay and used to follow him around like a needy puppy. knew he was likely the reason she didn’t want to be fully official yet. and that was fine with zac, he was fine with no labels and just.. being. if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t have admitted his feelings for the blonde when he did. he would have waited like he originally planned, waited for her to see what was in front of her. 

but zac had lowered his guard a little, relished in the moments he had with auggie, felt like everything was going more than well, and almost forgot entirely about jay. so seeing these text messages, has him a little stunned.

lids are slow and heavy to blink, blues a little sluggish as they examine auggies current state, and allows her to talk. because right now, zac isn’t sure what to say, all he knows is to think. and right now his thoughts are scattered between anger and hurt. confusion and dejection. so, for now, he’ll remained tight lipped, hands pressed against the sheets on his bed, listening, taking in every word she was saying.

he has to look away when she admits her love for jay, and when he notices a tear glide down her cheek, unable to sit there and watch her cry. zac feels weird, a tightness in his throat that makes it a little more difficult to breathe. all he wants right now is to pop another pill and relax because everything auggie is saying is just making his head spin more. “ okay. “ he finally says, jaw tensing. “ right. “ she had texted jay saying these things while zac was actually there for her in the hospital running on shitty coffee from the cafe, berating the doctors for any updates on her condition. he was there, worried out of his mind, and jay wasn’t. jay didn’t step a single foot in the hospital but he was still the first person auggie thought of.

head tilts as he cracks his neck, and his hand reaches down to grab the phone on his lap, slides it off and onto the bed so he could stand up. his index finger and thumb reach to pinch the bridge of his nose, tries to calm himself down and unclench his clenching bones. hand swipes down his face now, and his eyes finally meet hers again. “ i don’t want to lose you, either. “ another beat of silence, before he opens his mouth again. “ but i don’t want to be with someone who is still hung up another guy. i can’t. “ strides are taken past her, towards his door and reaching for the handle to yank it open before he turns to face her again. 

“ i told you from the start i don’t want to be second fiddle. i don’t want to be a place holder for your fantasy of jay. “ his tone is quiet despite the bite, and he rolls his neck again, wipes under his nose as he sniffs. “ i want you to be with me because it’s me, not because you want it to be me. not because jay couldn’t give you what you wanted, not because you want to be wanted. “ zac pauses, nods his head curtly. “ i need time. “ he finishes, tilts his head towards the door. because right now, if auggie stays here all wide eyed at him, he’s going to falter. and he doesn’t want to do that. he wants to think about this. he needs too.

that familiar warmth blooms in her chest as he speaks. devils snare entangling through each ventricle, knotting tightly until it feels like her heart may leap from her chest. eyes remain closed until she hears the word – but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t lean into his touch … calloused fingers more familiar than the feeling that seemed to linger whenever he was around. “since you asked so nicely,” she finally opens her eyes. feels like the lights around them are blinding, and they really might be. brows knit together as eyes narrow, a futile attempt to shield her pupils from the intensity of white. “no wonder i didn’t want to open my eyes – fuck,” swears feel even more risque in a hospital, but she feels like she deserves to use such terms. 

hand lifts to wipe at her eyes, tips of her fingers successfully finding, yet another, scabbing injury at the top of her cheek. she sighs, letting palms drop back into her lap as she casts her gaze towards him again. something good to focus on – but he looks just about as bad as she feels. causes a tightening guilt in the pit of her stomach. “oh, honey,” all humor in the situation dissolves, and she wants nothing more than to soak away all of his residual pain. “i’m sorry,” feels like it was her fault that he was so worried, that he hadn’t been taking care of himself. finger juts out, pointing to the chair he rose from. “sit down,” lips are pulling into a slight pout, and her lack of strength in the moment has her reeling. “and scoot like all the way over here,” she’s already moving herself, inching closer to where he’s meant to be. 

“how long have you been here?” a relative question, given that she isn’t exactly sure long she’s been there. her hand reaches out, pulling his hand close to her. fingers intertwine, and despite the sound of chaos outside her room, her sight is entirely focused on him. on the lack of sleep evident on his features, the cracking of his lips – and she’s sure her own are even worse … god, she probably looks awful — she lets that thought pass. far too harmful to think about. “have you been taking care of yourself?” the question slips out quicker than she can register how it sounded, as if he was unable to – but his appearance spoke volumes, made her concerned. “i’m sorry,” apology is repeated again as she presses a small kiss to his knuckles, “i shouldn’t be worrying you like this,”

she opens her eyes and he lets out a small sigh of relief, a small, weak but genuine smile appears on his features, dimples prominent. hand smooths over the top of her head as she adjusts to the white lights, thumb gently brushing against her forehead. suddenly, he’s wide awake, full of life and eager to finally be able to hear her voice, see her blink, move. despite him listening to the heart monitors since the moment he got here, zac was a little more relieved to see her alive, rather than hear. 

when she looks up at him, his smile remains, but he watches her scan his features and he shakes his head. “ i’m fine. “ he assures her, moving his hand from the top of her head and rests it on her arm instead. then, he laughs, furrows his brows confusingly together as his head tips sideways. “ why are you sorry? you didn’t do anything. except sleep for way too long. “ and he nudges her, makes sure to be as gentle as he could be, the teasing tone evident in his voice.

head turns behind his shoulder to look at the chair, rolls blue eyes amiably. zac’s fingers stay locked into her own as he pivots his frame slightly in order to push his foot out to under the nearby chair and pull it close enough until he could use his free hand to grab it. he pulls it close enough to where his knees press against the hospital bed as he sits, now somewhat leveled with auggie as he turns his gaze back towards her. “ i’m not sure. “ shoulder lifts in a brief shrug, eyes only flickering away to look at the clock briefly. “ awhile, i guess. i was in the waiting room while you were in surgery, and then when you were cleared for visitors i’ve been here. i left for awhile to shower, but... “

jackie had been by when he returned from his shower, the two talked and then she had to go due to some meeting with her parole officer. so, of course zac stayed. auggie had no one else here, and he wasn’t going to let her be in this hospital alone. couldn’t imagine it. he’d asked sunny if she wanted to come, assumed she’d want too due to how close the two girls were, but she rejected, tuned him out. reminded him of when their parents were in the hospital, so he didn’t protest. and admittedly.. he liked being alone with auggie. 

“ i’m fine, augustine. “ he repeats more sternly, shakes his head dismissively. leave it to her to worry about him while she was the patient. “ i’m not worried. “ he tells her, shakes his head. “ i just really like hospitals, you know? the entire ambiance and all. and your nurse? a total babe. “ bites into his smile, dips his chin down. her nurse was some lady in her fifties, and definitely not his type. but the humor still slips from his tongue anyway. he leans forward to press his lips against her own knuckles. “ how are you? do you need anything? water? up your pain meds? a sponge bath? “

rhythmic beeping fills the void in the room. the lack of energy bubbling from the blonde tucked away into bleached sheets. wires and tubes stick from pale skin, and if it wasn’t for the heart monitor signaling her existence – she’d look pretty lifeless. stabilized. it had been an absurdly close call. too much blood lost, fragments of splintered bone finding their way too close to vital arteries and veins. a lot could’ve gone wrong. both bullets only inches from ending her life. luck was on her side that day, but then again, getting shot isn’t that lucky.

sure, she’d been awake a few times. fluttering of eyelids that signaled some fraction of consciousness. but she kept her eyes closed. scared of what was on the otherside. here, in the dark, she was safe. safe from the violence that she saw last time they were open. part of her didn’t want to know she was alone, still. 

she was post surgery, now. bullets removed, skin stitched up. pain medicine flooding her symptoms, surely. augustine had heard bits and pieces from the conversation around her. best part, was that her dad wasn’t able to get a flight until maybe tomorrow. said they were all getting cancelled – so, she tries to keep her mind blank. that is until she hears him. augustine wonders if he knows – knows that she’s been pretending to be asleep to avoid conversation, avoid the pitiful looks … but she wasn’t alone. that fear was wrong. all the other ones were bound to be too, right?

“only if you say please,” her voice is hoarse, she barely recognized the sound. “like …” lips press together, and she can feel a scab – but she tries to ignore the thought of what happened in the bathroom, despite it looming blatantly in the corner, “please augustine, i really want you to open your eyes, it would make my entire life if you did,” she giggles to herself, but it comes out more as a wheeze, the movement causing a surge of pain to pulse through her, but she pushes through it. not wanting things to be hard now. “go ahead, i’m waiting,”

zac was used to hospitals. he spent the majority of his childhood in one, standing beside his comatose mother, holding her hand until visiting hours were over. he did that for months on end until his grandparents sat him down and told him that sitting here wasn’t going to do much, that he needed to focus on school and have a relativity normal life, that he needed to protect sunny. so he limited himself to at least twice a week. seeing augustine laying here, color drained from her face and the beeping of her heart rate filling the silence, has made zac conclude he will be spending a lot more time in the hospital again.

she finally speaks, and zac feels his shoulders rest a little easier now. beneath his eyes are dark circles, and he’s sure he’s a little dehydrated himself, considering he hasn’t left the waiting room or auggies room since he’s gotten here. and zac’s half certain he’s already facing some withdrawals, but he doesn’t care about his pills right now. all he cares about augustine mars and making sure she was okay. 

zac isn’t really sure what to do or say in this sitaution. he’s not sentimental, but he’s sure the last thing auggie needs right now is to be drowned in pity anyway. so instead, he tilts his head sideways, lets out a small hum as he stands above her. hands reach to, tuck some loose, sweaty hair stuck to her forehead, behind her ear. “ can i adlib? “ zac muses, his own voice a little deeper than usual as well. her laugh is like soft music to his ears, makes his chest clench even tighter and he’s glad she’s able to be a little light due to the circumstances. he isn’t sure how he’d handle anything different. 

“ pretty please open your eyes, bunny. “ his tone sings it, mimics previous text conversations just like she is, and he leans in to press a kiss against the top of her head. “ i need to see your pretty eyes. “
