Hyenas are a weird group. There are four extant species, each in its own genus. Aardwolves are the only remaining member of the dog-like hyenas and their last common ancestor with other extant hyena species was between 15 and 30 MYA. They primarily eat termites.

Brown hyenas live in family-based packs like wolves, but are mostly scavengers.

Striped hyenas live alone or with a couple other individuals and eat a wide variety of things, including fruit, truffles, and carrion.

Spotted hyenas are the morphological and behavioral outliers of the extant hyenas. They are most closely related to striped hyenas, but are far more robust, more closely resembling extinct bone-cracking hyenas such as Pachycrocuta. They live in large packs, are primarily carnivores, and kill 90% of their prey rather than scavenging.
