Secret poison cabinets in the shape of books, historicism in the style of the 17th century (1 2 3 4 5 6).
The Canadian author joins us to discuss the deep entanglement of tragedy and comedy in her latest novel, "All's Well."
BOLLEN: I took a lot of Shakespeare in college, and I donāt think we ever read Allās Well That Ends Well. Itās one of his āproblem plays.ā Iām not sure Iāve ever seen it performed.
AWAD: Itās super unpopular. The heroine isnāt particularly likable. My visceral reaction to her is not unique. There are a lot of people who are very conflicted by Helenāsheās a strange one. And sheās so drawn to this man. The attraction that she has is unique to Shakespeareās comedic heroines, almost masculine. Sheās not somebody that people easily root for, which drew me to her even more. Sheās polarizing. You can see her as this conniving wench, or you can see her as this poor orphan who is just trying to survive in this world where she has no power. And then she claims this incredible agency.
Lately Iāve been obsessed with the works of Hidden Velvet.

The last note in the Penguin Classics edition of Tacitusā Annales. Itās an incredibly effective moment created by the fragmentary nature of the text ā a reminder that History gives and takes with the same hand.
