Tumblr Dump of the Week: Congress
One hundred eight women (a record number) serve in the 114th Congress, BUT DON’T START PATTING YOURSELF ON THE BACK AMERICA!
18 African American women (which means 28 African American men), 9 Latina (which means 29 Latino)
6 Asian American women (which means 8 Asian American men)
55 white women (which means 360 something white men)
2 Native american men
Based on my brief research: http://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R43869.pdf http://www.cawp.rutgers.edu/fast_facts/women_of_color/FastFacts_AfricanAmericanWomeninOffice.php

Want to know the breakdown of New Members of Congress? (Side note: we need some website to do this intersectional sorting format for Congress overall, not just new members; get on it someone political sciencey-y? Like cmon primetime thesis for some college senior in the country right?)
http://www.nationaljournal.com/almanac/114th-congress-new-members Want to know about what religion politicians in Congress participate in/identify as? It’s your lucky day! http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2015/02/06/the-religions-of-the-114th-congress-mapped/
Using facts from our WGSS book in real life to battle myths about late term abortions. Feminism in action makes me so happy <3
If you apply lessons learned in kindergarten to real life, this is what you get: calling people out on their shit and speaking up in defense of people when you see them getting bullied.
YASSSS Jaden Smith. Wear clothing you like, not what society dictates is appropriate for you based on sex assigned at birth.

Conveniently this article forgot to mention the President’s answer about the coordinate college system at my school (a college/set of deans/student government for women and a college/set of deans/students for men). He said University of Richmond’s coordinate college system is “non-normative” and “humane.” This goes to show me just how blind he and the majority of this school are to the daily violence non-binary people at this school experience every day.
Breaking news (not really though if you pay any attention): Driving while black and male is basically a crime in the US, even if you're rich and famous. Glad Chris Rock is not being silent about this.

^ SO MUCH TRUTH
horizontal hostility in between anyone with at least one marginalized identity. real talk. extra bonus points would have been awards had she discussed intersectionality.
republicans are scum of the earth
I live in Ohio and I want to vomit
kileykinnard I’m really sorry. That is disgusting and horrible.
just a reminder
ladies and gentlemen and non-binary peeps, the moment you’ve all been waiting for

I do care about men... a lot
There is so much to write here... I really want men like my dad in the world. He cries because he is proud of me or sad that I’m sad. He expresses his love for one of my ex-boyfriends every time he sees him because my dad knows my ex doesn’t have his father anymore/a functional family life at all. Where are those men? Thankfully, several of my best friends are cis men, some of whom are straight. I have a supportive brother. I have multiple ex boyfriends that I try to keep in contact with because I still care about their lives. Two of my male English profs from high school and a smattering of male science teachers through the years (and a bunch of female science teachers too!) have strongly shaped my heart and mind and confidence. Clearly I would not be where I am today without the men in my life. There are also men in this world swept up and socialized in ways that are a detriment to everyone. Violence, hiding of emotions, stigma against men seeking therapy, expectations of being the breadwinner or the person to initiate interaction (especially sexually), being able to drink the most, etc. All of these things contribute to pretty negative side effects of masculinity. This is a huge reason, I think, that there is so much violence from men against women or men against men (yes, women can assault men too, though it is proportionally a much much smaller problem). In an attempt to engage my campus about negative ideals of masculinity in the US, I decided to do a screening of “The Mask You Live In” a new documentary directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. I invited people from our “male” student government contacted the “men’s” dean in Richmond College, a called FAME who go into high schools to mentor young men, and even contacted the frats indirectly. I wanted men to come watch this movie with female students. Alas, one male student and the male dean were 2 out of 15-20 people who came to the viewing. Why are men not as engaged on the topic of healthy masculinity? What tactics would be best in engaging them on this topic? I really want to get to the bottom of this and start fixing this on our campus. One of the ways I want to start with that is by establishing connections between the aforementioned male-dominated groups and WILL* the “feminist” group I’m a part of (which sadly/understandably does not allow cis men yet). Men, I care about you. Do you care about me? Do you care about you?
A link related to a college baseball player being kicked off his team for calling a successful female Little League pitcher a slut. I don’t have time to write all my thoughts, so I leave you with this: YES. This could set a precedent... I’d love that.
Women got to pay less money than men for baked goods men to raise awareness of the U.S. wage gap.
Yes to this idea, but as always I want to improve it. It’s not all women, only white women, who get paid 77 cents to a white man’s dollar. Men of color generally get paid less to a white man’s dollar and women of color generally get paid less to a white man’s dollar than white women (64 cents for black women and 54 for hispanic women). Asian women get paid 90 cents to a white man’s dollar and Asian men get paid more than a white man on average. And of course an individual’s situation is not based just on their sex and race. I know... I like to complicate things.
It is conflicting for me to be so happy about this. I’m not proud of the church because this is how it should have always been, but I am happy that all people within the church I was raised can be more of who they are in more spaces.
About a third of U.S. college presidents believe sexual assault is a problem on American college campuses, but only 6 percent believe it's a problem on their own campuses. It’s a problem at the University of Richmond and it’s a problem on every single college campus. Let’s get a grip on reality, speak up, and take action, spiders! March 31st the Office of Civil Rights will be on our campus to listen to our thoughts about how sexual misconduct handling works here. If you do not know how it works, then that is valuable feedback as well seeing as every student should be informed of what to do/who to go to for confidential support or non-confidential reporting.
