I just finished watching TTSS (2011). What a movie! At the part when Prideaux showed up at the prep school with the trailer I had the strange, vague feeling that I had seen this movie before. I don’t remember seeing it, but I must have seen it around when it came out, maybe with my brother? There were certain sequences that were oddly familiar, and then the end was very familiar. But before this viewing I could have told you nothing about what happened in it. That was excellent. I loved the set design, the cinematography, and the story. I thought the scenes that were out of chronological sequence were a bit hard to follow, though. I’m excited to read the book next. I’m not sure how hard it is to get the 1979 TV version, but I’ll keep an eye out for it.

It is a very familiar looking movie/story. Like hoe many English stories end up in a prep school. All of them? Even king Arthur himself spent 2 years at Eton.

Yeah I like the movie, Oldman, who is a motherfucker, is also good as smiley. I think the mole plot is less complicated then a first time viewer would assume. Because I think le Carre's whole point is, *cough* the human heart in conflict with itself. In retrospect it isn't a shock who the mole is, it's just a whole bunch of personal bullshit gets in the way. Certain decisions are made because of and in spite of long time relationships that have gone sour in their own way. There's a question in all of these, how long did smiley know? And I think that's less interesting than how long smiley could prove what he knew.

There's also a whole universe out there. George smiley comes off as everybody's favorite introvert in ttss but you get a whole other side to him in like spy who came in from the cold. He's a real son of a bitch in that.

The TV movie is available on youtube. Smileys people is also on there, and I think I like smileys people more than TTSS. Alec Guinness blows Oldman away. He's just SOOOO understated he barely moves, but it's sort of a worlds angriest dog situation where he's just so fucking intense that he can hardly move. He's an example of why you gotta worry about the nice cop. That guy gets you to tell him the entire story.

The series are a bit more of an investment. Like 4 hours, so don't feel like you gotta rush into it. Check out the le Carre books and see if they move you. Tinker tailor, smileys people, spy who came in from the cold. Don't go for looking glass war. I bought that book in la and ya know... didn't read that on the flight and it's currently collecting dust. I know le Carre isn't everybody's speed too, so let me know what you think about his style. I've found it frustrating as well.

Yesterday at the library I also got Spy Who Came In From the Cold and I already finished it. I knew le Carré by reputation (and a copy of Little Drummer Girl that’s been on an upstairs bookshelf since my childhood) but never dove into any of them. I didn’t know that the BBC adaptation of TTSS was on YouTube so I already ordered the Blu Ray! I think I’ll probably tear through this series. Thanks for the hearty recommendation.

Since I got my new car yesterday I’ve already taken my mother out to dinner, spontaneously went to the movies, took mom to see dad for a few hours, and gotten takeout for dinner tonight. Tomorrow I’m going to go to the library to get a new card and take mom to visit dad again. It’s nice to be able to get out and about again!

An employee at an ICE detention facility in Aurora, Colorado, shot a protester Thursday evening, Aurora Police Department shared in a written news release. The woman was hit in her lower body but is expected to survive. The suspected shooter is Brandon Booth, a 42-year-old who works for ICE contractor GEO Group. Moments before the violent incident, Booth and other facility employees were waiting in their cars on Nome Street, reportedly unable to enter the detention center due to an anti-ICE protest, according to local law enforcement. Police say that two women broke off from the demonstration, verbally confronted Booth, took photos of his car, and walked away. But Booth wouldn’t let them. Instead, he grabbed his pistol and fired a shot at the women, striking one in the lower body, according to the police report. “The AP has just posted a detailed investigation into the background of David Brouillette, the recently hired ICE agent who shot and killed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine. It’s genuinely horrifying on more levels than are easy to describe. Brouillette was hired during ICE’s recent hiring spree, as the agency attempted to rapidly staff up to manage a program of mass deportation. Brouillette has a long history of severe mental illness, a lengthy history of violence against at least two wives as well as his children, stalking, a seemingly endless list of restraining orders, violent threats against other family members and more. According to one relative, Brouillette was diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder as a child as well as attention deficit disorder, twice tried to commit suicide at age 12 and was hospitalized multiple times. These early issues appear to have been compounded by service in the military and deployments to Afghanistan which left him with an increased propensity to violence as well as PTSD. A relative told the AP, “They took someone who was extremely mentally ill and turned him into a killing machine.””
