Did you know that 90% of the police force in the Uk is White?Â
In statistics that are freely available on the internet from an official government website, 90% of the police officers in this country are white. At the end of March 2019, 93.1% were from the white ethnic group and only 6.9% from other groups.
To further quote the government website, only 4% of senior officers are from black, asian, mixed and other ethnic groups which is a raise from 2.8% in 2007. So in 13 years, we’ve only grown that % by 2 even though the population of BAME is extraordinarily higher.
The government website focuses strangely on the rise like its something to be proud about even though it is literally a 2% rise in 13 years, but they say its reflective of the country with 86% being white and 14% BAME.Â
The metropolitan police based in London obviously has more at 15% but again they focus on the fact that is reflective of the area with the 2011 consensus saying London is 40% BAME. The numbers now must be consideringly higher but is this reflected in the police force? I doubt it.Â
Bedfordshire’s numbers are surprisingly better with 10% BAME police officers in a 22% BAME area. Still low, but higher compared to other major cities across the UK.Â
So with all this information freely available and seeing the disappointing numbers when it comes to BAME police officers across the UK, what are the powers above doing to combat it? Do they care about this discrepancy across the country? Or is it merely acceptable to have one race predominantly have power over so others even if they are outnumbered?
Also, what training/courses do new police officers have to undertake to educate them on the history of BAME and/or white privilege and how the language used can either cause or refute a conflict with a BAME suspect.Â
Now I’m not saying all white police officers are racist. But there is definitely intrinsic systemic racism channeling throughout the police force all the way from the top. In this conservative government with the kind of rhetoric used by Trump and by Boris Johnson the police force needs to relook at the training of individuals taken on into the police force.Â
Also there should be a purposeful initiative to entice more people of BAME to enter into the profession of the police to broaden the number of BAME police officers across a more broader spectrum. Indeed, I feel, that the system would work better and yield better results if 90% of the force wasn’t white. Those accused of alleged crime and also victims of alleged crime would better be of assistance to the police if there was someone who they felt represented them too.Â
I will attempt to do more research into this so I can clarify if there is indeed a scheme and the benefits of it that have already been noticed.Â
Will update when I do.
