"I'm just teasing, geez!" Zack threw an arm around his mentors neck [honestly, he was more a father to him at that point]. "You know---" He tapped a fist against his chest. "I think you need a vacation, old man, you're getting a little grey around the edges. Sooooo, you know, once I recover from my head injury and all, maybe I can take some of your missions, eh? eh??" He was NOTHING if not persistent!

"Should I wash up first?" He gave his arm a good sniff. "I mean, I smell like a thousand varieties of onion gone bad." He looked like he'd been dragged through the mud too. Granted, she probably knew what a Soldiers business was about, considering she was friends with two already. Still, first impressions were pretty important! Under normal circumstances any how.

" who are you calling old man? Watch your cheek.Don't make me regret deciding to introduce you and yes, wash up first. Even if Louella is understanding you should be presentable."

He pushes Zack off shaking his head in amusement. He'll let the old man cheek go this time, but Zack has a lot of nerve to be this cheeky. He's not even old enough to be Zack's father. He's in his mid 20s.

Though sometimes he does feel like Zack's father and In those times he's tempted to give him an ass whooping, but of course he doesn't because its not appropriate and abuse of power.

So he doesn't trust someone wants to genuinely be his friend or just get along at first. He'll try getting under a persons skin to drive them away. "Pffffft, when have you EVER gone easy on me??" Pounding him into the ground, giving him extra things to do, to, and he would quote 'Keep him busy.' Genesis just saw what he wanted to see when it came to certain subject matters. He would glue an extra metaphorical head on Zack if it meant he could despice him. Truthfully, Zack was just picking at the issue, he didn't really feel one way or another about it.

Getting to the point of a promotion to First Class was his primary objective, taking nearly all of his time. Actually, it seemed far more difficult than he imagined it would be. He'd been training since the age of thirteen for the privilege.

Well, whatever. He'd make it!

'Course, he thought the next mission would put him on a fast track to making the cut, but THAT didn't work out quite as planned. Friggen sucks.

"You're talking like she's waiting for me around the corner." Zack narrowed his eyes, standing on his tip toes to look around Angeal to the corridor ahead. "Hellloooooo?" He called, "Wait, are you trying to set me up on a date?" He grinned, "Angeal, you dog."

Angeal couldn't help but chuckle at the 'used to toss you two on your asses' comment.

" No. But she certainly tried to toss Genesis on his ass whenever he went too far teasing her. He didn't know how to talk to girls back then and he didn't like her taking my attention off of him at first. Used to call her annoying ugly duckling because she followed us around a lot. She didn't have many friends. The girls made fun of her because of her eyes being different colours, her body shape and because she was more like a boy than a girl. There was some jealous y of her being close to Genesis an I as well. Genesis especially because his family is rich.

Her and Genesis got into fights a lot. I didn't get involved unless necessary. But As soon as she'd cry , which wasn't something she did very easily , " he chuckles at the memory, " Genesis would panic and acted like it was a big emergency. He never let other boys tease her either. "

"Genesis used to hate her too, huh. So you're saying I have a chance!" He teased, grinning wide, pumping up a fist. He knew that it was highly unlikely that Genesis would ever feel the slightest bit warmer toward him. And that was okay! They only thing that mattered was getting along on missions if the need arose when they actually worked together. Zack had pretty big shoulders against negativity [and his puppy energy absolutely refused to relent to it anyhow!].

"It helps having friends in high places, right." Looking out for one another!

It was obvious by his cheerier demeanor that he [although not forgotten!] had accepted that his injury had effectively removed him from the mission he'd been mapping out in his head forEVER. He would say that he would be caareful the next time, but that simply wasn't possible!

In fact, the same exact thing was likely to happen again if he could go back for a retry!

"Okay, I'll meet her." He agreed, "Need me to keep her company or something?"

❝ right . . . so he's insecure and a literal man child ? yikes. ❞ okay , maybe that's a little harsh , but Zack was used to people being easy to be friend. he never met someone who didn't take to his energy until Genesis. and he wasn't used to someone being annoyed by his antics. usually people brushed him off once or twice. Genesis was a tough crowd. ❝ the only way you can make it better is by probably getting mad at me the same amount as him. ❞

"I'm not sure I'd call it insecurity, Zack. But he is a man child sometimes. He's just misunderstood things and think's an unfair situation is unfair. I think if the tables were turned you'd think it's unfair as well if you thought some kind of favouritism was going on. But I'm not going to get mad at you for no reason Zack. I will talk to him. "Also Zack, Genesis was taught to always suspect people, he doesn't trust a person wants to genuinely befriend him at first because he's been taught people will try to get close to him to get something from him. By now he should know what kind of person you are, but if he's lashing out trying to get under your skin to drive you away still, he's still getting used to you. I've been planning to introduce you to for a while now. I think you two would get along. She works as a mercenary, so you have some things in common."

Zack always seemed to behave like he was teetering at the edge of a knife, never quite knowing when to stand still and let things run their course. Nah, if nothing else, Zack was the one that burst through the wall looking for the next big thing to get into.

For the moment, he needed to draw himself back, not get so emotionally charged over a very reasonable request. Because it was that: reasonable. Just because he didn't like it didn't make it less so.

Angeal cared. He knew that, he appreciated someone behind those hostile walls giving more than two shits about his wellbeing. He couldn't allow his disappointment toward the situation to sully that fact.

"Still not happy." Because he was a child, he had to have the last word, but it was obvious that he'd settled down and come to terms with the decision. Didn't mean he had to like it.

And Genesis is not safer just because he is less intimidating to you Zack. There would be any point to leaving you under his instruction, because I'd have to watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't set up an impossible task for you. you wouldn't get anything out of it."

❝ well , while you're speaking with Sephiroth , please make Genesis be nicer to me. Angeal raises an eyebrow, staring Zack down sternly.

" Zack, I said no and that's final. You need to take this seriously, you have a head injury, no matter how minor, it's a head injury neither less. If you're going to continue to behave like an impudent child, I will treat you like one, is that what you want? "

"I can't believe this!" He threw up his arms, frantic steps taking him to pacing back and forth with restless energy. A rare opportunity for him to participate in a mission with his mentor, vanquished in one fail swoop after a singlular stupid accident. That's all it ever took to change the course, one careless move. It was a good lesson to learn moving forward, but not one Zack had any inclination in embracing.

He knew he was far overstepping his boundaries by giving lip to his superior officer. Didn't matter their relationship, it was a poor show. If it had been anyone BUT Angeal in front of him, his ass would be grass.

Be that as it may, even though it WAS Angeal, he knew he was pushing his luck. He had to respect his decision, regardless of whether he liked it or not.

Zack never was very good at restraining his emotions. Which, one could argue, was another lesson he needed to learn.

Well, to put it simply: when it all went belly up. When things didn't work out the way they were supposed to, who wouldn't feel a minor blip of irritation???

Angeal pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs. " Zack Genesis is the the one you should be watching out for. He'd set you up to fail. Sephiroth would never set you up for something you're incapable of. He can make accurate quick judgements of someone's capabilities by only seeing someone fight once or twice. You have no reason to fear him so much. I'm only considering leaving you under his instruction for a couple sessions. Trust me on this Sephiroth could help you improve by a lot. "

okay maybe he should consider it. begrudgingly. the sigh he lets out is a little on the dramatic side , but he does end up acquiescing to his mentor's words. Angeal has never failed him before. there's no reason for him to start now. even if Sephiroth does in fact scare him , he'll give it a few good tries.

❝ okay , I'll try. but if he skewers me with his sword then I'm gonna haunt you man. I'll rattle every chain and move all the pictures on your wall by one degree so they're off center. ❞ now he's just being pure drama. still , he's going to give it his all. ❝ when do I start visiting the great and powerful Sephiroth ? still think Genesis is safer . . . ❞

"... Zack you shouldn't judge him by his cover. Sephiroth may be strict and has expectations of others but he's only like that with those he knows are capable. If he doesn't think someone is capable he doesn't waste his breath on them and ignores them. He's just quiet, and socially inept. He's been raised not to show emotions and to supress them. He didn't know what friendship was or anything we take for granted, until Genesis and I came along and taught him. Others judge by appearances and by what they've heard or seen for themselves against enemies. Some rumours are exaggerated too. Sephiroth actually takes interest in your progress Zack. I personally think It would be good for you to do this. For Sephiroth as well. " He wonders if Zack got to see some of Sephiroth's other sides if he'd stop being so afraid of him. Well, if Zack becomes a first class he'll get to interact with Sephiroth more and get to know him.

Sephiroth isn't the only hero in the world. Zack has potential. either way , he is definitely against this. Angeal could talk Sephiroth up all he wants but Zack is absolutely terrified of this man who is a one man army.

but maybe when he becomes first Sephiroth won't be as scary . . . nah. he's probably always going to be scary. ❝ besides , you're a first. you're already teaching me. if you're gonna pawn me off on someone make it Genesis. at least he's not scary. ❞
