Regulus had always loved visiting the astronomy tower: it was quiet, peaceful, and had an easy view of the stars. He’d come up almost every night since his second year, and never once had he been up here at the same time as someone else. Until now.

“Fancy seeing you here,” James spoke, seeing the other turn his head in surprise. The astronomy tower was the only place James could go to escape things or hide; no one would ever assume he’s up here. He clutched the map in his hands, putting it into his pocked as he turned back to look at the far distance view from the tower.

“What’re you doing up here?” Regulus asks, confused, “Don’t you have to look after my idiot brother or something?”

(OOC, regulus doesn’t know that the gang has split up because he’s not paying attention to his brothers’ activities)

James followed a string of stars in the sky, trying to find the end of the constellation. He tried his hardest not to let Regulus’ comment sting, but it did nonetheless. It was difficult to pretend the group’s split didn’t bother him. They were his best friends, after-all, and now they can each barely look each other in the eye.

“I’m stargazing,” James stated the obvious, looking over at the black haired boy. “And no. We’re not really talking anymore.”

Regulus glances up at the stars too. It’s too early to see his star, which he knew.

“Oh?” He asks, “Why not?”

He’s genuinely surprised; Sirius and the Marauders had been getting along fine earlier this month, so what had changed?

“Its…” James let out a small huff of breath, turning his head slightly to look at the younger of the Black brothers. “Complicated,” he mumbled. A bit of silence passed between the two. It wasn’t uncomfortable or awkward,but it wasn’t necessarily comfortable either.

Regulus shrugs.

“I come up here a lot. The stars are comforting. They listen…”

He falls silent; he doesn’t really want to explain the things going on in his family.

“Is Sirius okay? I know you said you don’t talk to him but… was he okay, last time you spoke?”

James sat back, rubbing the heel of his palm against his brow like he could push the worry out of his skull.

“I don’t even know who he is anymore,” he muttered, voice quieter than usual. “I mean, I do. Somewhere under all of it — the swagger, the snide little smirks, the way he acts like nothing sticks to him — he’s still there. But he’s… fuck, he’s slipping.”

He glanced at Regulus, unsure whether it even mattered to say this to him. But it had to go somewhere.

“He used to fight it, you know? All the shit your family poured into him. He hated it. Said he wanted to be better than them. Said he was. And for a while, I believed him. I think he believed it too.”

James swallowed, the words catching.

“But now? I see him with them — Crouch, Rosier, Mulciber, your lot — laughing like it’s all a game. And I keep thinking, what if he’s stopped fighting? What if he’s tired, and he’s just letting it win?”

He looked down, fingers twitching in his lap.

“I’m not angry at him. Not really. I’m scared. Because once you stop fighting that kind of darkness… it doesn’t let go. And I don’t think he sees it happening. I think he thinks he’s still in control.”

Another pause.

“And I don’t think I am, anymore. I don’t think I make a difference.” He was quiet once again for a few seconds before saying. “I know you’re on the otber side of the war than him and I. I don’t care if I offend you, but I don’t want him to end up like that. He didn’t want to end up like that. I’m worried he’s changed his mind.”

Regulus sighs.

“I… don’t want him to end up like me either. I’m fucked up inside, truly. I… used to fight it, like him; he was my big brother! I wanted to be just like him… but… I think when mother saw the way he turned out she… didn’t want me to end up like him. She did everything in her power to separate us and… it worked. I hate that it did, but it worked. I’ve got the mark, now and… I never used to want it, but now…”

He shrugs, praying that James can’t see the tear slipping down his cheek.

“I don’t know what I would do if he got the mark… I think it would be like all of his progress was for nothing, and… I don’t know… it felt a bit like I was living through him, y’know? But if he… if he gets the mark… it’s like everything he did to fight our parents… just… was pointless.”

“Regulus…” he said finally, barely above a whisper. “Shit.”

His voice was softer now, the anger bled dry, replaced with something hollow and aching.

“I don’t want him to end up like you either.”

James looked away for a moment, eyes stinging in spite of himself. “Not because you’re weak. Or cruel. Or anything like that. But because I can see it on you… what it costs to carry all that silence.”

James looked back at the stars in the sky, thoughts spiraling into a million stars in his head. He wanted to say so much, but didn’t even know where to start.

“Do you remember when you and I would spend time together in the quidditch grounds after lessons were over? Back when I was in 4th year?” The two havent spoken about that in years, and James loved hanging out with Regulus, as much as he didn’t like to admit it. He was stuck up and cocky, but he also was fun to be around. They definitely weren’t friends, but there was some sort of mutual respect for one another—before they grew up and realized they had to pick sides.

Regulus chuckles quietly.

“I do.”

He wished he could go back to that; the carefree child who didn’t have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

“God, I miss that.”

It felt strange, admitting it out loud. It felt like simultaneously, someone had lifted the burden from his chest, and then replaced it with something heavier.

He doesn’t want to cry; not in front of James, not in front of anyone, but how can he hold it back now? Now that he’s explained his entire life story to this man who he barely knows.

He turns away, so James can’t see his face.

“I’ve tried… I think… I think I sort of see myself in him… which isn’t good, but the first time… it was me drifting away from him, and now I’m the one trying to talk to him.”

James found him near the edge of the courtyard, leaning against the stone wall like he owned the place. Like there wasn’t blood on the future he was walking into.

He didn’t bother with a greeting.

“You. We need to talk. Now.”

“Oh hello to you too there, Potter,” Barty sneers. “How can I be of assistance? If this about you trying to control Sirius’s relationships again because I swear to Merlin I will fucking hex you and leave.”

“Again?” James scoffed. “I’d never control who Sirius goes out with, it’s none of my business. What is my business, is when his partner is clearly up to something, trying to drag him into it,” James gritted his teeth together. “Best believe I’m gonna find out what you’re getting at, Crouch, or so help me—“

“I don’t know what you’re on about,” Barty says, eyes innocent and a small smirk playing at the corners of his mouth, amused at Potter’s frustration. “You know, I understand you don’t like me but making up false accusations in your head about me is an issue. Perhaps you should seek help…”

“You know eactly what I’m talking about,” James snapped, feeling his face heat up in anger. “You’re on the wrong side of the war, Crouch. Sirius has worked his whole life to not end up like you. Don’t fuckin take that away from him.”

“I’m offended, potter,” Barty scoffs dramatically. “You take me for a villain simply because I have different political views than you? I thought you were above this, James, dearest. As for Sirius, I’m not influencing any of his decisions, simply… ah… stating facts, if you will.” He smiles pleasantly at James, merely to test his patience. “Wake up and realize that we’re the same: men in war trying to do what’s best for someone he cares about. Only, one of us actually knows and loves him while the other is trying to control his life. He’s not yours, James. He can choose for himself. Why don’t you ask him?”

James scoffed. “I’m not controlling anyone. I’m trying to keep him safe. And I have spoken to him, dimwit. From what I’ve gathered by knwoing him- oh wait- yeah, my entire time at hogwarts, and the past conversation I just had with him, I think it’s safe to say he doesn’t want to be on your side. Do whatever the fuck you want, but don’t start messing with his head. He’s worked too hard to not end up like you for you to come along and fuck it up for him is all I’m saying.”

“And I’m just trying to say I’m not messing with his head. I just want what’s best for him. I’ll have you know, the only person who’s been there for him after you lot fucking shut him out is me. Opinions change, Potter. Maybe you don’t know him as well as you thought you did.”

James could feel his blood boiling and he knew he had to leave before he pulled his wand out, before he couldn’t control his anger. “Just don’t fuckin’ hurt him.” He mumbled, turning around and walking away.

The thought that he might not know Sirius well, that stung. It left a bad taste in his mouth to think that his best mate in the entire world could’ve changed his mind on something so crucial to his personality, and James wouldn’t have a single clue. Because he’s been shutting him out, just like Barty said. Oh how he hated that Barty was tight.

Regulus had always loved visiting the astronomy tower: it was quiet, peaceful, and had an easy view of the stars. He’d come up almost every night since his second year, and never once had he been up here at the same time as someone else. Until now.

“Fancy seeing you here,” James spoke, seeing the other turn his head in surprise. The astronomy tower was the only place James could go to escape things or hide; no one would ever assume he’s up here. He clutched the map in his hands, putting it into his pocked as he turned back to look at the far distance view from the tower.

“What’re you doing up here?” Regulus asks, confused, “Don’t you have to look after my idiot brother or something?”

(OOC, regulus doesn’t know that the gang has split up because he’s not paying attention to his brothers’ activities)

James followed a string of stars in the sky, trying to find the end of the constellation. He tried his hardest not to let Regulus’ comment sting, but it did nonetheless. It was difficult to pretend the group’s split didn’t bother him. They were his best friends, after-all, and now they can each barely look each other in the eye.

“I’m stargazing,” James stated the obvious, looking over at the black haired boy. “And no. We’re not really talking anymore.”

Regulus glances up at the stars too. It’s too early to see his star, which he knew.

“Oh?” He asks, “Why not?”

He’s genuinely surprised; Sirius and the Marauders had been getting along fine earlier this month, so what had changed?

“Its…” James let out a small huff of breath, turning his head slightly to look at the younger of the Black brothers. “Complicated,” he mumbled. A bit of silence passed between the two. It wasn’t uncomfortable or awkward,but it wasn’t necessarily comfortable either.

“What about you? Why are you up here?”

Regulus shrugs.

“I come up here a lot. The stars are comforting. They listen…”

He falls silent; he doesn’t really want to explain the things going on in his family.

James watching Regulus’ demeanor tense, deciding to nod instead of saying anything. He turned back to look at the stars.

After a few moments of silence, Regulus asks James a question that’s been burning for a while.

“Is Sirius okay? I know you said you don’t talk to him but… was he okay, last time you spoke?”

James sat back, rubbing the heel of his palm against his brow like he could push the worry out of his skull.

“I don’t even know who he is anymore,” he muttered, voice quieter than usual. “I mean, I do. Somewhere under all of it — the swagger, the snide little smirks, the way he acts like nothing sticks to him — he’s still there. But he’s… fuck, he’s slipping.”

He glanced at Regulus, unsure whether it even mattered to say this to him. But it had to go somewhere.

“He used to fight it, you know? All the shit your family poured into him. He hated it. Said he wanted to be better than them. Said he was. And for a while, I believed him. I think he believed it too.”

James swallowed, the words catching.

“But now? I see him with them — Crouch, Rosier, Mulciber, your lot — laughing like it’s all a game. And I keep thinking, what if he’s stopped fighting? What if he’s tired, and he’s just letting it win?”

He looked down, fingers twitching in his lap.

“I’m not angry at him. Not really. I’m scared. Because once you stop fighting that kind of darkness… it doesn’t let go. And I don’t think he sees it happening. I think he thinks he’s still in control.”

Another pause.

“And I don’t think I am, anymore. I don’t think I make a difference.” He was quiet once again for a few seconds before saying. “I know you’re on the otber side of the war than him and I. I don’t care if I offend you, but I don’t want him to end up like that. He didn’t want to end up like that. I’m worried he’s changed his mind.”

Regulus sighs.

“I… don’t want him to end up like me either. I’m fucked up inside, truly. I… used to fight it, like him; he was my big brother! I wanted to be just like him… but… I think when mother saw the way he turned out she… didn’t want me to end up like him. She did everything in her power to separate us and… it worked. I hate that it did, but it worked. I’ve got the mark, now and… I never used to want it, but now…”

He shrugs, praying that James can’t see the tear slipping down his cheek.

“I don’t know what I would do if he got the mark… I think it would be like all of his progress was for nothing, and… I don’t know… it felt a bit like I was living through him, y’know? But if he… if he gets the mark… it’s like everything he did to fight our parents… just… was pointless.”

He didn’t say anything at first. Just stared, wide-eyed, as if the world had tilted in his hands and he wasn’t sure whether to hold it steady or let it fall.

“Regulus…” he said finally, barely above a whisper. “Shit.”

His voice was softer now, the anger bled dry, replaced with something hollow and aching.

“I don’t want him to end up like you either.”

James looked away for a moment, eyes stinging in spite of himself. “Not because you’re weak. Or cruel. Or anything like that. But because I can see it on you… what it costs to carry all that silence.”

James looked back at the stars in the sky, thoughts spiraling into a million stars in his head. He wanted to say so much, but didn’t even know where to start.

“Do you remember when you and I would spend time together in the quidditch grounds after lessons were over? Back when I was in 4th year?” The two havent spoken about that in years, and James loved hanging out with Regulus, as much as he didn’t like to admit it. He was stuck up and cocky, but he also was fun to be around. They definitely weren’t friends, but there was some sort of mutual respect for one another—before they grew up and realized they had to pick sides.
