Sometimes I think about the dinosaurs and I get emotional. Earth was their home for SO much longer than it's been ours, 200 million years vs our mere 200,000. We think of this planet as "ours", but we are such relative newcomers. And they were still only here for what, 5% of the Earth's total age? Yet, for a stretch of time unfathomable, this was a dinosaur world, teeming with reptilian life that would seem alien to us. If it hadn't been for that asteroid, they'd still be here, and who knows what incredible forms they would have taken? What fascinating behaviours they would have displayed? They were our predecessors, we have studied them and speculated but we'll never know what they were truly like. As is common with all life though, they were born, and grew and learned and loved and eventually slipped back into the ether like we do. I love them.

I still get worked up over this, especially when pmsing. Our ancestors. Here for inconceivable amounts of time more than we have been. Who we can never know fully; extrapolation and clever guesses are as close as we can ever get. Who will never know of us! They will never know how we built theme parks and figurines and life-sized models in their honour. How we recreated them to the best of our ability in films and documentaries. What if they could understand our fascination, fear and love?

What strange and incomprehensible ways will we be immortalized and beloved for whoever or whatever comes next?
