When Dick Greyson is 15 he sits down to think about what he really wants out of his life. The only things he really loves are Gymnastics, Acrobatics, and being Robin.
Well⌠mostly he loves being Robin. Itâs been a long four years of crime fighting. Dick is getting older and Bruce is getting harsher, taking Batman down some roads that Dick isnât sure he wants to follow him down. Dick wants to help people and Dick wants to fly.
Heâs not sure if Robin will lead him down that road anymore, but Batman needs him.
Still, he needs something himself too. He reaches out, looking for a connection with other young heroes like him.
When Dick is 16 a rumor starts spreading online. Someoneâs saying that Robin could be Dick Greyson. Whoever it is has been watching him move and they noticed him showing off. Showing himself that he was still a Flying Greyson with that quadruple summersault.
Batman is not impressed and tells Dick to tone it down.
It aches in his soul. Itâs part of who he is and no matter how unique and identifying it may be, he doesnât want to leave it.
One other thing happens when Dick is 16. Bruce takes in another child, adopting Jason Todd right off Gothamâs streets. Itâs the same little punk who tried to boost the tires off the batmobile last year. The boy is young and angry at the world. Heâs a kid who needs something, like Dick needed something when his parents died.
Batman needs Robin, but now Dick starts to consider that Robin doesnât have to be him. He carefully reaches out to the new kid and offers to teach him to become Robin.
In his spare moments, hidden away where Bruce wonât find it Dick starts to build himself something new.
When Dick is 17 he gets shot. Bruce panics and tries to bench Robin. Fat chance of that working.
Jason is 6 months into Dickâs tutelage and nearly ready to take up the mantle. Not to mention Dick has other responsibilities as Robin with the Teen Titans. Dick isnât just Batmanâs little sidekick now.
Dick spends half the year splitting his focus between his responsibilities to the Titans and his responsibilities to Gotham. Gradually handing more and more of Gotham to Jason.
Bruce doesnât even notice that sometimes Robin doesnât look like Dick. Worldâs greatest detective Dicks entire ass. He still hasnât even noticed that Jason started training.
Bruce and Dick get into a fight over Dick having split priorities between Gotham and his new team. Bruce fires him from being Robin. Despite the fact that Dick has been working on passing Robin on, it still hurts. The end of his time as Robin was something he had meant to be on his own terms.
Jason sits with Dick for hours, heâs not much for comforting words, but heâs a solid presence. It helps Dick to breathe through the pain. The smile he and Jason share when Jay heads down to the cave the following night is something sharp and vicious.
Bruce is going to get his mind blown when Robin shows up, but without the Domino so Jasonâs full face is on display. They both know heâll get the Bruce Bootcamp of training after that, but Dick Knows Jason is more than capable of passing.
Dick Greyson is 18 years old, and the life of Robin has been left behind him. Those downy feathers of youth have been traded for something more mature. Nightwing stalks the night alongside Batman and Robin.
He and Bruce are working on mending Fences, six months apart let them both cool their heads. Dickâs next plan might strain their relationship a bit, but itâs what he needs to do to keep being who he wants to be.
Dick Greyson has two loves in his life, Fighting Crime and Flying, and heâs not willing to give up either one.
