A post-election day experience

On Tuesday, the women in my section, a group of the most intelligent, kind, and ambitious women I have ever known, coordinated to wear either all-white or pantsuits together. Why? Because we were excited that, for the first time ever, a woman could be president. I remember the pride and joy I felt  as we took our picture, thinking that the world had changed.
Wednesday, without any coordination at all, we wore all black.
For some, it was probably an ironic statement. We felt that if a white outfit symbolized the hopes and dreams of feminists, a black outfit showed the truth. For some, it might have been a sign of mourning for this country, which would rather elect an incompetent racist who brags about sexual assault and has no legitimate claim to the title of President than a woman. For me, it was just how I felt.
I don’t care if you’re Republican or Democrat. You just need to know that what was supposed to be a day for every woman to hold her head high actually turned into a day of shame. I had trouble looking people in the eye. Girls in my class were crying the entire class period. We had to hug and support each other and tell each other how much we loved and respected each other because we didn’t get that message from our nation last night.
As for me, I’ve had my moments of sadness. No doubt there are more tears to come. But right now, what I feel overwhelmingly is anger.
To those who read this post and think “now, now, that’s not really what this election was about—“ don’t you dare comment on this and try to “help” me understand. I am fully aware of all the complexities of an election, but none of them negate a truth I am speaking about.
To those in the LGBT community, racial minorities, or immigrants—please forgive the self-centeredness of this post. I felt it was important to express my feelings, but I am deeply aware that you all have so much more to be angry and scared about than I.
Finally, to those who feel as I do… Like I said, I’ve got no silver lining message. But I offer you support and encouragement. You are not alone.
