âOhâŠâ that was the reaction she had received from her best friend. It could have been a lot worse, but it still stung deep in her chest. Lottie swallowed hard, eyeing him carefully. And then he said âokay.â She let out a small, almost bitter laugh. âIs that all you have to say? I mean, I have my first boyfriend, Casper. An actual boyfriend. Someone who really likes me for me. Isnât that exciting?â She couldnât help but feel as though she wasnât going to get the reaction sheâs looking for. So she decided to drop it. âNever mind,â she waved her hand dismissively. âItâs fine.â
Casper wasnât expecting the hostility that came from Lottie, but he shouldâve, and as soon as she responded, he knew he had fucked up. He was happy for her, happy that she had someone in her life, but he couldnât seem to form those words. His mouth became very dry and uncomfortable. If he spoke now, he was going to fumble over his own tongue. Then, Lottie dismissed him and Casper felt awful. âCrap, Lottie, no. Thatâs not what I- what I meant to-â He was fumbling alright. âIâm happy for you. It is exciting. I just wasnât expecting it. Not because youâre not wonderful because you are. Ash is lucky to have found you. I just didnât realize you had become so close.âÂ
And suddenly, Lottie felt like the jackass. She knew Casper didnât mean it like that, he wasnât trying to be a jerk about it. And she was wrong for being upset over the reaction. âNo, Casper, itâs okay. I.. I just havenât been this happy in.. I couldnât tell you how long. Ash makes me feel wanted, something I havenât felt.. like ever,â she let out a small laugh. âI just want my best friend to be supportive of this. Without your support, I.. I donât know. Iâd feel wrong. I care about you and your opinion, always.â
