It's honestly sad as hell how much Astartes NEED companions, like they're highly social creatures. They're like cows; they need a herd, they'll get depressed if you just stick one by itself in a field.

It makes them so vulnerable to manipulation.

In Unremembered Empire, John Grammaticus easily manipulates Narek, who is holding him prisoner, with "What if we were friends, don't you want a friend? Doesn't that sound nice?" and Nareks like "...ah fuck it does"

Or, hell, Abaddon is wildly successful in recruiting Astartes for the Black Legion because he knows just how many guys feel lost without a herd. That yearning for a battle-brother bond is so deeply hardwired into them, they'll jump to attention the second you offer it.

i think one of the worst things the left wing internet ever did was push the idea that oppression is basically a virtue, and being oppressed is a sign of your morality. it has made it like…impossible for some of you to hold the idea that most people are privileged in some ways and oppressed in others. AND a lot of you seem to have it in your mind that terrible people cannot be oppressed, and that oppressed people cannot do terrible things, which is a dangerous rhetoric to hold imo.
